Anyone played around with a low acid - high protein diet?

Is it possible??

A 65% "healthy whole grain" diet is usually more acidic than a 15-20% "adequate protein" diet with ~10% carbs (& I don't eat any grains). Also, the body is very good at maintaining a neutral pH in the blood. The anti-meat proponents of low acid diets don't mention these key points. The reason acid levels in urine may be high is that the body is getting rid of the excess. Most people who used to have "acid indigestion" or "acid reflux" find these clear up in a week or two on low carb (esp. low-grain LC) diets; many spent years in pain and gobbling antacids.

Loren Cordain's latest newsletter talks about grains and acid balance.

These studies raise many concerns, because
most Americans do not meet 100% of the US recommended
dietary allowances for magnesium
(420 mg for men over 31 years old, and 320 mg
for women over 31), and even those who do may
be in magnesium deficiency if they consume a
high amount of whole grains. Whole grains contain
phytic acid, which decreases magnesium
absorption.28 Grains also yield a net acid load29,
that not only increases calcium excretion30, but
also magnesium, as a recent German study has
shown31.

Thank you Nancy. That answered my question precisely. My doctor put me on magnesium supplements (combined with my lowcarb lifestyle). He said my magnesium levels were terribly low.

Makes sense!

Here's some info (http://www.beyondveg.com/cordain-l/prot-calc/prot-calcium-loss-1a.shtmlhttp://www.beyondveg.com/cordain-l/prot-calc/prot-calcium-loss-1a.shtml) about calcuim and magnesium, mainly to do with osteoporosis.

Bone decalcification is one of the reasons that salt in on our "sin" list ;)
