HI all,
Is anyone on the CGMS and low carbing? I'm finding the trend graphs really useful to observe how I respond to high protien meals. It turns out that I need about one unit for every 20 grams or protein and it is best to spread that out over (I'm on an insulin pump and can do this) over 8 whole hours.
Is anyone else CGMSing? Alternatively, how long do people find it takes their protein to "translate" into glucose?
Thanks!
V.

V,
Few of us here have access to a CGMS. So I appreciate your posting your results. Are you Type 1 or 2?
A friend who is Type 2 using lantus alone who used a CGMS saw very flat blood sugars. I suspect that is because Type 2s still have a delayed second phase insulin release which can mop up protein. Type 1s don't.
But now that you have this information from the CGMS you should be able to get extremely good control.
Which one are you using?

Hi there,
I'm type 1. (I won't go into the m.a.s.s.i.v.e. struggle it was to get insurance to cover this). I use the minimed paradigm system- an integrated pump and cgms. I have always found that protein was the missing variable in my low carbing. I knew it took several hours for protein to turn into glucose, but I didn't know it would take almost 8 hours- and I especially didn't know that I had a protein ratio!

V,
I really ought to start looking harder to see if protein is affecting me more than I think.
A friend has a Dexcom and if I want to buy sensors I might be able to try it in a while. I probably should. My diabetes isn't Type 1 or Type 2, but a MODY and I'd really like to see what the bgs are doing when I can't test.

v-effect, when you say "protein ratio" what do you mean? Your ratio of protein to what? And, what's the value of your ratio?
Thanks,
Carolyn

Hi there,
Well, my protein ration is like an insulin to carb ratio. My carb ratio is 1 unit of insulin (fast acting) for every 6 carbs. My protein ratio is one unit for every 20 grams of protein. Depending on how fatty that protein is, I spread that part out over 4-8 hours, using the "square wave" function on my minimed pump.
Hope that helps. Do other people have a "protein ratio"?
V.
