I am scheduled for a D&C on Wednesday w/my gyno, and I'm scared to death that it's going to hurt. Has anyone had this procedure recently, and what can I expect? My gyn (love him, he's so gentle) tells me it will be a "38 second procedure". My sisters tell diff stories about the times they had them, awhile ago - they were PUT OUT for it (i.e. general anesthesia). How do they do this now?? Is there bleeding afterward? He did tell me to take some Motrin before I go to help with the "uterine cramping."

If it is anything like the endometrial biopsy I had, yes it hurts but it is over quickly. I wasn't forewarned to take anything like ibuprofen so I didn't get that advantage. I was crampy afterwards until the ibuprofen kicked in. Bled a little, not even enough to require a pad.

Don't worry about it it is over quickly, just think of it as practice for child birth!

Thanks, Nancy!! I sure hope it is over very quickly - I am SUCH a baby when it comes to pain!! Oh,and been there, done that w/childbirth - she's almost 20 now and tells me "Pssh, Mom, I've had a CAMERA up mine!!" (She unfortunately had to have some stuff done last year that included the camera.) Anyway.....keeping my fingers crossed that I don't freak out on him.

D&C is a walk in the park. The most pain you'll have is the IV. Seriously, it's easy peasy.

I have had a couple. Mostly I had a wee bit of tummy discomfort, but less than having TOM.

no worries, you'll be fine!

It's not so bad, they pretty much knock you out. I had period like cramps for 2 days but they were very mild. You'll be fine.

Thanks,Penni. SIGH - he tells me that depending on what the D&C shows, then we "talk options" -i.e. hysterectomy. I have a large fibroid that is enlarging my uterus and causing me to get TOM every 2 weeks. I understand that the "H" isn't as invasive as it used to be, but still......

oh, it's invasive all right. But it was the BEST thing I ever did!!!!
I'm talking complete relief!!! energy!!! no TOM!!!

yeah, I had the flooding... they kept doing D&C's until I went in to the docs and said: 'rip it out!'

What a wonderful thing it was getting it out. Only the first 2 weeks were rough for me after the hyst. Then I got better and better, but I was tired for a long time afterwards; hubby had to wait on me hand and foot... heeheehee....

Penni - did you get a complete "H"? And did your hormones go haywire afterwards? I am at the point where I tell him all the time that I want it OUT. No more of this fooling around with hormone therapy, waiting it out, etc. I am done!!

Nope, they left the ovaries. Smooth sailing.

I really appreciate everyone's input on this. I'm still nervous about the procedure, but now not so much!! :)

Man, my gyno was frothing at the mouth eager to remove bits of me. I didn't want to though.

Just reporting back after the procedure. It wasn't too bad- he snipped out two cervical polyps that he said MIGHT be accounting for the abnormal bleeding. Thank God he didn't have to use the "dialater" for my cervix- it was "open" enough for him to thread the catheter in. A little bleeding, but nothing really bad. I will find out next week what the pathology stuff says. He told me that in years past, that procedure meant 3 days in the hospital!

I had 1 tiny polyp removed too. It was entirely painless. But the endometrial biopsy... that one sucked!

I'm glad it went smoothly for you!
