Does anyone else here supplement with Krill Oil?
I decided to switch from my usual fish oils after reading about on Dr Mike's blog: The Brain Trust Program, krill oil and menopause (http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/ketones-and-ketosis/the-brain-trust-program-krill-oil-and-menopause/) and Another reason to opt for krill oil (http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/supplements/another-reason-to-opt-for-krill-oil/).
I managed to source the Neptune capsules here in the UK. However, I've notice that they've got a very peculiar smell, and wondered if this was normal? My previous source of fish oils didn't smell at all.

I think most fish oil is filtered for mecury, I know the kind I get from Trader Joe's is.
I have a subscription to Consumer Labs, let me see what they say. Ok, none had detectable levels of mecury in any they tested. No PCBs or dioxins.
I think the Krill oil makers just are exploiting a marketing angle.

I too decided to take Krill oil capsules after reading Dr. Mike - even though I'm in Ireland, I still find that ordering from the US site iherb is much cheaper overall. I take them in addition to cod liver oil - my father lived till he was 91 and swore by it.
And Demi you're right - they don't half pong in the container! But you don't get that 'repeating' pong from them after eating them :)

BabsSo it sounds as though the smell is quite normal then, and you're right about the 'repeating'.
I'll have to check out the iherb site to see how much cheaper they are. I currently pay £17.95 for 90 capsules, plus £1.25 for postage, from myprotein.

Balleen whales (and penguins, BTW) live on krill. My grandmother used to cook whale meat for her dogs--I can't imagine a worse smell, and I've been to paper plants. I'd guess it's the krill that makes whale meat smell the way it does.

I managed to source the Neptune capsules here in the Uk. Any chance you could say where?
I've been using Now Foods, Neptune Krill Oil, 500 mg, 60 Softgels $19.02 (http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=5827923860467550031) or $76.08 for 4 x 60 + $8 P& P £84.08 for 240 or 3 months supply.
I'd be very pleased to find a cheaper supply.

Demi, I've used it before, and am about to start again, and yes, they reek a bit
I think the plan of attack I'm going to go with is:
1 Krill softgell
2 fish oil caps (totalling 1400 mg of EPA and DHA)

Never heard of krill oil -interesting, thanks all.
I've always thought that the krill oil pills smell like aquarium fish food. Fortunately, they have no taste and I have never had any kind of "krill burps".

I just started taking krill oil, chromium and Vit D a week ago and my wt went up about 3#. I didn't change anything else.... very strange but I am going to keep with it because it seems to be helping with hot/cold flashes and I am sleeping better.
I just did a saliva hormone test and am waiting for the results.

Apparently krill oil helps with estrogen dominance and insulin resistance.
Stay tuned - I'll post more when I know more.
