Is there any research data that might support the idea that the if you stay on the induction phase of the Atkins diet for prolonged periods of time that there are adverse health effects?
I've been on the induction phase for a little over a month and I'm losing weight. I feel fine, but want to make sure that by staying in this phase I'm not doing any long term harm.
Thanks for your help.

Are you taking the recommended supplements?
And, compared to what? To carrying 40 extra pounds around your whole life? or smoking? or not exercising, or eating junk?
It's all relative.
There are no really useful studies because it's too hard to standardize. It's all N=1 and you're the only rat that matters.
Good luck.

No. Many cultures eat even fewer carbs than on the Atkins diet for their entire lifetimes and thrived.

Here is a pretty good example:

I used this study many times when someone would tell me that there was not enough research on the health benefits of Atkins. If you think about it, these people were probably in a constant state of ketosis.

Thanks for the info - I broke induction today (in a big slip!), but I know that I have been feeling really good in this phase so I'm glad to get a bit more info.
I have always figured our appendices were obsolete for a reason...

I haven't really gotten out of induction except when I have cheated. I like it here. I think induction is my happy place!
