For a long time I've been trying to figure out why my fingers have dark patches under the cuticle and on the knuckle area. I've done numerous Google searches trying to figure it out. Well, today, as I was looking at weight-loss success story photos I noticed that in the before pictures, people's skin looked much darker then in the after picture. I did more research and discovered the condition "Acanthosis nigricans". There is a picture in Google of a hand with that condition, although much worse then mine, at last I know what it is! I read that often it's related to being over-weight and having too much insulin. Then from that I read that insulin resistance is a stepping stone to Diabetes 2.
This is REALLY scaring me! It's finally dawned on me that being over-weight isn't just a cosmetic issue anymore. Being over-weight isn't an option anymore. I am scared that I am already on my way to getting diabetes. I just really hope it's not too late to turn this all around....

Understand too that your weight isn't the specific "cause" but rather a symptom of insulin resistance taking it's toll on your metabolism. You have a powerful means to reverse your symtoms - a low-carb dietary approach!

I don't know a whole lot about insulin resistance or insulin in general. I need to take sometime to do research to further fuel my motivation to stick to This WOL!

The book you need to read right now is "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. Best book on diet, disease and humans since... ever!

Dark patches, skin tags, dry mouth etc. all sighns of high sugar. it used to be called "sugar diabetes" not anymore though.
You can get a blood sugar tester for about $12 and test your fasting sugar-- some say over 100 is pre-diabetic. Mine used to be 116, now its 88 after low-carb for three years and especially now with the fasting regime.

Re skin tags: do these go away when you begin to heal your metabolism? I have these all over now and don't know how to get rid of them. My sister cuts them off but I'm too squeamish to do that. I've definitely noticed that the rate of new ones forming is much less now that I'm LC.

You can get a dermatologist to burn them off. When I've called around, the "entry fee" is about $400 for a session. Could probably find the service cheaper at a good spa with an MD associated.
Or cut off the ones you can reach, and have sanitizing stuff and a styptic pencil handy.

After a few days they painlessly dry up and fall off.
