I have just been diagnosed with PCOS, Im 19 years old.

All my childhood I have had all of the symptoms of PCOS, but never thought anything was wrong untill I suddenly gained 40lbs in a few months. I had no Idea what was going on because I was eating the same foods, and wasnt changing ANYTHING. Thats when I went to the Dr. and the tests showed I had PCOS.

Im currently taking Glucophage, and have been taking it for about 4 months now.

I am still gaining weight. Since I went to the Dr. 3 months ago, I have changed my WHOLE diet. I havent eaten red meat in months, all I do eat is grains, fiber, fruits, veges, salmon, veggie burgers, veggie chicken patties, yogert and low carb snacks. I excercise for an hour a day.

I just had my 4 month checkup today for my PCOS, and Im still rapidly gaining weight and my Dr. said she doesnt know why Im still gaining weight. She said the diet and excercise should be enough to make me loose weight.

Is anyone else having this problem? No matter what I do Im still rapidly gaining weight. I just want to know if im just going to keep blowing up or not.

Your carbohydrate intake is driving up your insulin and contributing to continued insulin resistance....to reverse that state requires a restriction of carbohydrate in favor of adequate protein and fat calories to round out energy intake to be adequate and satisfying. My DH, who is a reproductive endo, routinely recommends carbohydrate restriction for his PCOS patients and with great results! If/when you restrict carbohydrate, you may need to reduce/eliminate the metformin - depends upon how much it impacts your ability to make glucose in your liver when you take it.

:daze: OMG! I agree with pennink & ReginaW. You're intake of carbs is too high. Stop eating the grains, low carb snacks & fruit! You're doing the opposite of what you should do, which is eat meat and fat and stay away from the grains. You're in the right place to get lots of good info on low carb and pcos, though!

Tell your Dr. to do some research on low carb, insulin resistance and pcos!!!!!!
P.S. I'm also reversing my pcos as we speak ;)

I agree with penink and spacedoll. Get on Atkins. Why aren't you eating meat? THere is a GREAT website just for PCOSers. It is www.soulcysters.net There is so much great information there.

Honey, you can't eat carbs if you have PCOS. Carbs *cause* PCOS!

You're going to feel like crap when you first start the low carb diet and this will pass. Just stick with it and you'll feel right as rain after a few days.

But don't just jump on the LC wagon without an education. Read Protein Power and Atkins.

You're young. You'll have amazing results with this diet! :)
