I've been stuck bouncing between 154 and 160 for 7 months now so am looking into other low carbs plans. Everyone seems to rave about the SB plan but I am wondering about the fat intake. I know he's not into saturated fat so I have several questions:
1) Since he doens't allow cream does one have milk in their tea? Does it have to be ff milk?
2) Is it ONLY low fat cheese he allows?
3) Can you use butter for cooking or spreading on LC crackers?
4) Does he like you to eat a LOT of fruit? Fruit does not agree with me at all........
5) Can you have chicken thighs and beef burgers or is it skinless chicken breats only?
6) Can you use condiments like mayonaise on your salad?
7) What about coconut and cocnut milk? I like to eat Thai food which has a lot of cocnut in it. Is this allowed?
7) Do you have to eat the 3 snacks? I like to eat 3 decent meals and don't like to snack as I find it just makes me hungry for a proper meal.

Hi Scarlet.
I'd like to help you out with a few of your questions. But first have you read the SB book? If not, it might be helpful to do so. I borrowed it from the library before I bought it.
As to what/how much fat to eat its suggested the lower fat you consume the fast you will/should loose weight. But it comes back to personal choice. Thats what I like about SB. You can pick from the food lists what you would like to eat. It also has the approved fats for each phase.
I can't remember what page the listed here. So I'm hopping Judy or someone else will stop by and let you know just where they are listed.
I tell you what I personally do....
I use lite cream, and ff milk I put ice in my glass of milk as I like it really cold.
I use some lite cheese and real cheese put don't eat it every day and try and keep it at 2 oz or less when I do eat as its very high calorie
I use real butter but only in cooking breakfast and use less than 1 T.
I use lite mayo but keep it to only 2 T per day.
I don't like dark meat chix, but do have steak every couple of weeks but again try and keep at 6 oz or less. Yes I eat beef burgers but try to use lean beef.
As for your other food questions I don't eat them.
The SB plan is set up to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks. It works because you are keeping your body burning. I'm sure it will make more sense once you have seen the food lists and meal plans, and read the book.
Please keep in mind you don't have a lot weight to loose. So if you don't lower your calorie intake you might not ever reach your goal.
Since you seem to have been eating the higher fat foods and aren't getting anywhere it would seem that you need to make changes. So why not start changing some the of things you think you live with.
Just litte changes to start with.
Good Luck.

Hi Scarlet!
I love SBD and really recommend it. I think it provides for a very healthy balanced diet. I hope you come over and join us.
I am NO expert on this, but will try and answer some of your questions. Hopefully people will point out if I’ve made a mistake.
1) Since he doens't allow cream does one have milk in their tea? Does it have to be ff milk?
FF or 1% milk, or FF Half&Half
2) Is it ONLY low fat cheese he allows?
FF or LF, Look for varieties that have 6 grams of fat or less/ounce
3) Can you use butter for cooking or spreading on LC crackers?
No butter :(. I only use it on bread usually so since I’m not eating bread it’s not a problem. I always cook with Olive or Canola Oil. I think some people use “I Can't Believe It's Not Butter” as a spread.
4) Does he like you to eat a LOT of fruit? Fruit does not agree with me at all........
If it does not agree with you I don’t think you HAVE to have it. I think you are SUPPOSED to graduate to 3 fruits a day. I stick to 1 a day. 3 is too much for me!
5) Can you have chicken thighs and beef burgers or is it skinless chicken breats only?
Lean burgers are fine (93% lean), but I don’t think chicken thighs are allowed.
6) Can you use condiments like mayonaise on your salad?
Don’t think so, but there might be an alternative to mayo that others use?? Salad dressings are supposed to be 3 grams of sugar or less per 2 TBS. Beware of HFCS (high Fructose Corn Syrup) in a lot of the low-cal dressings. I usually just make my own with Olive Oil, Balsamic and mustard.
7) What about coconut and cocnut milk? I like to eat Thai food which has a lot of cocnut in it. Is this allowed?
No idea, sorry. One of the more experienced perople can answer this
7) Do you have to eat the 3 snacks? I like to eat 3 decent meals and don't like to snack as I find it just makes me hungry for a proper meal.
I have never had three snacks (when I’m on-plan, that is!). I just don’t have the room for it. I find one a day is good for me. I think the purpose of the snacks is to keep your metabolism revved and not let you get so hungry that you get back home from work absolutely starving (which is dangerous for me)
Hope that helps a bit.

I don't have time now but see page 41 of the South Beach Babes thread for the complete food lists and meal plan charts.
I use Smart Balance as a spread when I use a spread.
I do use chicken thighs once in a while but do not eat the skin. I do eat a lot of chicken and turkey breasts.
Yes, we do use mayo and full fat if you like...BUT we practice portion control on SB....see the meal plan charts or food lists for portion amounts.
I am a grazer and eat mini meals and snacks throughout the day and eveing...it works for me...do what works for you.
If you are stuck at a weight, try bringing your total calories down by knocking out cheese and nuts for 2 weeks..or other calorie dense items that you are eating.

Just to piggyback to others...
Watch out for ICBINB (I can't believe it's not butter) and other soft spreads. The ICBINB spray is transfat free and OK for SB, but the soft spread still had partially hydrogenated oils in the ingredients list the last time I looked which was admittedly quite a while ago, so maybe they have changed their formulation. Don't be fooled by the "0 gms of transfats per serving" advertising. They are allowed by the FDA to round down to say that! You have to read the ingredients list too. Smart Balance or Benecol are good soft margarine alternatives.
I'd be more worried about the amount of added sugars in that Thai food than the coconut milk, esp. in the curries! Dr. A might have missed the boat on coconut products. They are high in saturated fats and his view is that all saturated fats are bad fats, so a no-no for SB. If you read outside his own literature there are a lot of sources that find saturated fats from plant sources like coconut can actually be quite healthy for you. I love me a good red Thai curry, but I'd skip it for P1 and enjoy in moderation in P2 and beyond, but that is more because I know there is a lot of sugar and I just don't know how much, not so much because of the coconut milk.
For P1, I'd really just try to accept the food list as is. Start right, experiment later.

Yep that's what I am curently doing. I have switched to LF cheese and am limiting intake. I have also stopped making LC sweet treats which are highly calorific.

I've just returned from Thailand and after balancing out my TOM weight I found that the Thai food did not make me gain at all. Since I have returned I make my own Thai food from scratch so I know there is no sugar in it. I think they may be onto something with coconut causing weight loss as the scale is down from the curry I made yesterday.
