Aussies stand against scales of injustice

15 November 2007
Kamahl Cogdon
Herald Sun

LIKE many Australians, Steffanie Chatelier has watched the scales creep up and up over the years.

The Mitcham grandmother, 49, weighs 102kg, up from the svelte 66kg she sported before having children 23 years ago.

She is at a loss to fully explain her weight, which at one stage blew out to 115kg, or how to budge it.

Mrs Chatelier said she tried to eat healthy food, led an active life as a house cleaner and enjoyed walking.

She had also tried many diets and weight loss programs, most recently a hormone readjustment diet devised by a naturopath.

However none was successful.

Mrs Chatelier is typical of a growing number of Australians struggling with weight.

She said she believed hidden nasties in food were partly to blame for the nation's obesity crisis.

"A lot of it is because we are so busy we tend to be more reliant on quick, processed food," she said. "A lot of them are high in sugar, which isn't good for you despite what the advertising says."

Mrs Chatelier also said the weight loss industry was counter-productive, causing many people to put on even more weight in the long term.

She said she often felt disappointed and sometimes turned to unhealthy comfort foods when diets did not work or results were short-lived.

Mrs Chatelier said hurtful comments also did not help.

"There is this stereotype of a big person sitting on the couch all the time stuffing junk food in their face.

"But when you see an obese person the chances are they have tried everything and nothing has worked."

How sad. I was hoping to see some kind of revolution, but it just trailed off into hopelessness...
