At walmart they have a "yellow box" of sweetener right next to splenda. Is this stuff "just" like splenda? They used to market splenda as "made from sugar" and now I dont see that in adds or anywhere on the box.
So is it really made from sugar?

ALSO; it my Atkins book Dr.A says avoid things that end in "ose" , well the #1 thing in splenda is "dextr ose". :q: :q:

I only use Sweetzfree now, so I can't comment on "dextrose" in Splenda. I remember it used to contain maltodextrin as a bulking agent, though. However, my understanding is that Walmart's store brand of sucralose is very close, if not identical, to Splenda.

Splenda might have removed those "made from sugar" comments from their labels and ads, because they're currently being sued over that wording by the makers of Equal.

Sweetzfree is the best - I keep one bottle in my backpack, one in my car, and one on my kitchen counter.

It rocks!

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucralose):

Though marketed in the U.S. as a “No calorie sweetener,” Splenda actually contains slightly more calories than the same mass of sugar (391 kcal per 100 g vs 390 kcal per 100 g for white granulated sugar). However, since Splenda is one tenth as dense as sugar, a given volume of Splenda has one tenth the energy of the same volume of sugar.[5]

Also, again from Taubes: Near the end of the book he says that if ones brain thinks it is or will be getting carbs, it releases insulin. Insulin engenders hunger and locks fat into the fat cells (so ones body cells are forced to run on glucose). It seems to me that perhaps eating things that are sweet, even if they have no, or few, calories (i.e. artificial sweeteners) could contribute to obesity in this way.

There was a study that was reported recently, that found that people who drank more than 4 cans (I think it was) of soda pop a day, including diet, were more likely to be obese. An insulin response to things that taste sweet might, maybe, be the cause, if my logic is correct. This is my guess only, of course, from putting together what Taubes said with the study.

When I was actively losing, I did get a bottle of sweetfreeze. Yes it is expensive. I only used it for my coffee in the morning and when I did have a sweet treat so it lasted me a very, very long time.
Now that I'm maintaining, I don't feel the need to purchase the expensive stuff. I actually use a liquid sweetner called fasweet. In my opinion, the cheaper brands are just as good.
Just try in and see if it effects your weight loss.

The walmart stuff is the same product as splenda. The filler agent that makes up the bulk of the product adds carbs.

Sweetzfree, and similar sucralose based products are expensive but one tiny bottle is the equivalent of something like 96 cups of sugar. Do the math - slightly better deal or very close in price than buying pourable splenda, but no carbs at all. I bought a bottle over a year ago and its still more than half full.

Altern is just the house brand of splenda. All powdered sweeteners use bulkers. That is one reason I like the sweet leaf stevia. It uses FOS, a healthy form of fiber instead of dextrose or molodextrin.

Basically Splenda held the patent on powdered sulacrose. That patent ended so now there can be generic brands available. That is why Splenda now released the tablet form in the US. Until the patent runs out on the tablets, splenda is the only brand that can sell them. I am hoping once that patent runs out then they will start selling the liquid form.

They do the same thing with medicines in the US. One of my medicines comes in extended release. The plain version already has a generic out, but the extended release was put on the market years later, so for a while there will be no generic of that form available. They will even do this with dosage amounts, for example a 30mg can have a generic, but a 15mg dosage won't until the patent falls off.

One bottle will last you for MONTHS!

One drop per cup of coffee.

Maybe two drops for a big glass of iced tea.

This stuff is very potent without all the "-ose" fillers in it. One tiny bottle will out last HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of those wasteful paper envelopes!
