While I'm not in Cola. now, I live in Lancaster, about 1 1/2 hours north. Also, I grew up in Columbia. What area are you moving to? I lived in the Forest Acres area, that on the north side. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Carly, I'll offer all the support I can. We have been Low-Carbing for awhile now. And while I will be honest, there have been spans when we were off, I have always felt better and had much more energy when maintaining a Low-carb diet. What are your weaknesses, this will help with support. Some of us are "bread addicts", some pasta, some potatoes, some (like myself) are chocoholics. Let me know a little about you and keep in touch.

I think it's more like what AREN'T my weaknesses! I love, adore, worship fresh baked bread! Pasta is a close 2nd with late nite TV snacks 3rd. I am feeling better but still jonesing for a piece of chocolate cake that is sitting in my kitchen. My boys and husband support but don't plan to play this with me.
I have seen a bunch of sugar free jello and cool whip bandied about around here. Is it really legal and how much if so?
How long have you been on this and how long did it take you to see results. I know this has to be a WOL and I can take that. Just slow to start and depressed that all that I love will be gone forever! Just kidding.....kinda :p .
Just give me a kick every now and then and thanks for being around.

Carly, I vote yes to the Sugar-Free jello & cool whip (or go luxury & make real whipped cream), we have it for dessert quite often. Also (but I'm not familiar with your plan) there are lots of Cheese cake recipes & I make a fab mousse using sugar-free pudding mix & heavy cream (this is a special treat dessert as it does have tons of fat). Another good treat or meal replacement that works for me are the Edge drinks they sell at Wal-mart. Anyway, hope these help, keep in touch.

I am trying the Atkins induction then maybe Somersizing as she allows fruit as long as it is on an empty stomach and you don't mix it with any carbs or fats/pros.
Today was really bad. Woke up with a stomach ache so after I took my son to work I ate some cantelope (on empty stomach) to see if the sugar in it would calm it down some. BIG MISTAKE! I had really bad cramps and icky poo. TMI, sorry. Been dizzy and sleepy all day and still the stomach ache persists though not as bad as a.m. Is this the flushing of toxins or just a freak thing?
Do you know if Arrowroot powder is allowed on any of these plans? I only have the Somersize book and it is not listed. It is an herb/root, white powder that thickens like starch, but you don't have to have the water hot to make it work. The bottle has no nutritional label on it so I don't know what it's make-up is.
Well, glad to know I can have Jello. Maybe that will help things tonight. God I want some tortilla chips! But I will persevere! Thanks for the help.

If you are on the induction for Adkins it your body is having to switch metabolism from a carb burning to a fat burning mode. This can be smooth or for some they experience weakness at first until their body switches over. Basically you have been getting your energy from the carbs you have been eating, now that you have cut those out your body has to switch over to the fat burning mode. This can take a few days to a week (people are different). I would suggest laying off fruit during the induction, the reason being is it will confuse your body's metabolism.Once you get past the first few days you should feel much better and will be suprised at how little you eat and get filled. Good luck.

Didn't mean to start a whole new post but I did by accident. As I said in that - I can't believe there is someone else on this forum in my area! That is so neat. I work for the local telephone company here in Rock Hill.

I go to cola alot because I have family members there. I have been on the atkins plan since 9/30 and have lost about 10 pounds my problem seems to be to find that time to exercise, my mom and dad are both on the atkins plan too so we try and keep each other motivated. I am bipolar and sometimes i can't fall asleep either. Keep up the work and lets chat online sometimes. I am new to this site and i am still trying to figure out how to use this to my advantage. Take care and hope to hear from u soon.

Carly,
Stick to your guns now and plan a big reward for yourself after you begin adding in a few more carbs. The reward I would suggest is baking yourself some of Dr. Atkins sourdough bread that you can order from his web site. I tell you that is some of the best bread I have ever eaten. We used it to make low carb stuffing at Christmas and found that everyone preferred our low carb stuffing to the regular stuff.
I am also in SC around Cola. My husband and I are both down 50+ lbs on Atkins.

Suzanne,
I was wondering it your still around? I also live in NE Columbia.
I've LC'ed on and off a few times over the past several years. I've decided today that I need to get back to eating better and I'm about to start induction again. It's always good to have support and encouragement.

Wow a lot of support for columbia people!!
Carly, I had the dreaded diarhea for about a week straight when I satrted induction. Fat was going right through me it seemed. I really think if you want to be in ketosis and get that true inductin start you need to avoid eating over 20 carbs a day. I'd forgo the fruit the first two weeks. If the dreaded 'd' is too bad, do what I did and try and cut down the fat for a day to give yourself a break by eating lowfat meats mostly but fat is good for you on the plan. Good luck

I know where that is, your over at Village at Sandhill.
I'm not too far down the road from you. I'm in a older subdivision called Clearsprings(Brickyard and Hardscrabble).
I'm married no kids. We moved up here a little over 2 years ago from Florida. After going through 3 hurricanes we decided it was time to leave. His family is up here so that's why we moved here. I work for a home builder as a production assistant.
You have done great on your progress. What got you started with lc'ing? and how many children do you have?

Deana,
I have 4 kiddos. A step daughter(18), a daughter(6), and 2 sons(15yrs and 18 months).
I have done low carb a couple of times in my life, and it has always worked for me. The previous times, though, I have treated it as a "diet" and not a lifetime way of eating. This time, I have done much better on it. I have committed to doing Atkins "by the book" which includes working up my healthy carbs. Before, I always just did induction until I just gave up. This time, I am working my way up and I feel so free. I feel like I could really eat this way forever.
How long have you been LCing and what got you started? Are you working your way up the ladder, or are you sticking to induction levels? I hope that you are having a wonderful week. ttfn.

I first started LC'ing in 2003. While on vacation with my husbands family his aunt had lost over 20lbs and I started talking to her about how. Well of course she was eating LC. She explained what she got to eat and how great she felt. So when I got home I bought the Atkins book and read up for myself how to do it. I started soon after and loved it. I was very good for about a year. After the stress of going through 3 hurricans within a few months time I fell and hard. Took me several years later to try it again that was almost a year ago. I only stayed true for about 3 months. (I can't even remember what happened to make me fall). So here I am back at it again. This is my first day of induction. I know what to do and how to do it. It's the staying with it part that is hard. Now I've reached a point in my life that I know at my age if I don't start making a change in my health I'm going to really regret it. Each day I feel worse and worse. When I look back at how much more energy I have and less aches and pain when I eat this way I know it's so much better for me.
You mentioned before you just ate induction levels of carbs. I can't even imagine not adding more carbs, no way could I have or would I have stayed with it that way. I hope by adding certain good carbs back into what you eat helps you to continue to enjoy and not think of it as a diet. There really are so many good things that we can eat. Have you been to the "Kitchen" section to get some recipes? There is no way I could have stayed with it so long the first time without this board and the wonderful recipes people share on here.
How about your husband and kids, are they supportive of you?

Deana,
My husband doesn't really understand it, but he is supportive. The older kids are proud of the weight that I have lost. My 6 year old keeps asking me "is that on your diet?" Sometimes I pretend like I am going to eat whatever treat she is eating at the time and she will tell me "mommy, you can't eat that, it's not on your diet".
I think that sticking to induction levels before is what ultimately led to my falling off plan, so I am glad this time to be experimenting with what I can and cannot eat. I can pretty much eat unlimited amounts of Low carb veggies whithout a problem. I have tried nuts and they don't seem to cause a problem unless I really over it. I only tried strawberries once as a dessert along with some cottage cheese and that did not cause a problem either. I wish that I could grow some of my own veggies to make this WOE a little cheaper, but having just moved in to our house, I think that will have to wait until next year. I was thinking about checking out the farmer's market over at the Clemson extention this afternoon to see what kind of selection and prices are over there. Have you found any local money savers in this area?
I hope you are having a wonderful day. ttfn. Suzanne

So how did the farmers market go? I'm not sure where that is at.
I've been to the one down town by the fair grounds. I went on a Friday so it was pretty dead (They way I like it, not too many people) there were still enough booths set up to get what I wanted. The one thing I found out was the people selling prefer to sell in bulk. Such as a flat of strawberries etc. That is way more than I could eat before they went bad. It's just my husband and I. So here in SC I'm still learing what is around. I'm used to FL there I knew where the good stores were and where to find things. The only health food store I've found is Rosewood. They have things such as flax seed in bulk. But I found it expensive. They did have a few sf items so I will be planning a trip over there in a few weeks. I need to splurge once in a while.
I love cottage cheese with some fruit and a couple drops of sweetzfree, makes feel possitive I'm not on a "diet". It's so sweet and yummy. I can't wait until I can start eating fruit.
My biggest problem with this way of eating is I'm not a cook. I'm not good with cooking meat. Sounds strange but I'm not comfortable with it. So I end up getting bored because I'm only comfortable cooking certain things.
Hope all is well with you.

I wound up not going to the farmer's market last week. I got sidetracked with the kids and forgot to go. I will try to remember to go this week. The one that I am talking about is at the Clemson extention facility on Clemson Rd right across from the village at sandhills. I think it is open every Tuesday from 3:30 until 7.
I have a few "treats" that really keep me from feeling deprived. My daily treat is first thing in the morning. My coffee in the morning with heavy whipping cream and davinci syrup starts my day off well. My occasional treat is a chocolate concoction that I mix up from time to time when I need something sweet.
I take some melted butter, a little bit of coconut oil, a little bit of cocoa, a little bit of peanut butter, and a little bit of vanilla davinci syrup. Mix them well, pour it in a mini muffin tray and put them in the fridge to get solid. It is similar in taste to Reese's cups, but the texture is different. Those really make me feel like there are special treats that are totally acceptable on this WOE.
I know what you mean about cooking different kinds of meat. I am not really good at cooking pork. I never can seem to get the cooking time exactly right. Steaks are a little tricky too. I love to eat them, but they are definately not my specialty. Rosewood market is good. There is also Earthfare over on Devine and The Fresh Market over on Trenholm. They all have a good selection of food, but are way out of my budget. These days I am having a hard time making ends meet with the prices at normal grocery stores. The thing that I wish that I could find is a place to buy beef in bulk (like half a cow) or fresh cream and eggs.
I hope that your weekend is going well. ttfn. Suzanne

(Northeast Farmers Market is open on Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. or later, in Town Center at Lake Carolina.)
Here is some information I found about another one near us. Sounds like the one you mentioned near Clemson only this one is on Thursday not Tuesday.
Neither one of them is good for me, by the time I get off work and back on this side of town it's not worth going out there so late.
I am off on Fridays so I'm thinking about going back to the market that's at the fairgrounds. Might be able to ask around there to see if anyone knows or if they themselves sell fresh cream, eggs and or meat. Those are the same items I buy every week and seem to be the most expensive. Oh and cheese. I look through all the grocery store add to see what is on sale and decide that way where I shop that week. I'm fairly fortunate in that I have a few choices in grocery stores that are all about the same distance for me. Where do you usually shop, Super Bi-Lo? I think it's the closes to you isn't it?
That treat you make is something I had forgotten about. I use to make them years ago the first time I lc'ed. Well without the coconut oil, back them the benefits were not know. They reminded me of reese peanut butter cups. Yummy.
Have you thought about starting a journal? Or is it not of interest? Just wondering, seems kind of strange to keep talking in here. Although the benefit of keeping the thread up top in case anyone else from Columbia comes in. :)
