Have any of you ever heard of the SCD Diet? Is it helpful for bowel problems and losing weight? My son and I both have ADHD with bowel problems. Would this diet be beneficial? However I need to lose and he needs to gain weight.

I think you'd probably find it beneficial but for my purposes the Paleo diet served just as well and was far less fussy. They are very, very similar.
BTW: I found out all my bowel issues were caused by grain and dairy products. Both SCD (in some forms) and Paleo diet avoid both.

Yes, I have the book and it is a good program. The SCD (Specific Carb Diet) is targeted to heal bowel problems and reduce inflamation. I haven't done it long-term but it introduced me to gluten and grain-free eating.
There are a handful of good sites all about the SCD plan - they will be on the first page when you search on Google.

I have been on the SCD for some 7 years now and have certainly benefited (for reducing inflammation/ IBD / IBS symptoms), though I had to transition to a much lower carb version - a hybrid with Atkins. I am considering going dairy free as Nancy_LC suggests. I am a bit of a homemade yogurt addict and try and limit myself to about 3 cups of day of that. As iron-disciplined as I am for most carbs, I haven't had the discipline to try more than a few weeks of going dairy free.
Anyway, the SCD is a huge improvement over the standard amercan diet. Unlike Atkins and low-carbing in general, it is not that low in carbs (unless one chooses to go further, as many of on the diet do, and eliminate the "legal" nutflours and honey and fruit) and also unlike LCing in general, it rigorously avoids almost all processed foods and food additives, which I think is one of its other strengths over generic LCing.
I happen to be a "skinny" LCer (since I am LC for bowel/IBD issues not weight) and the weight-gaining aspects of carbs ironically are the one thing I miss, lol.
