Folks, it's official, I have fallen off the Paleo wagon...

Not on purpose, but probably more because of the old demons that I still battle, namely, the one that tells me I can relax a bit and be less vigilant. And the other one that told me I could kill my scales. Denial. Rationalization. Self-defeatism.

I'm sure that there are plenty of things going on in my life right now that a psychologist could have a field day with, but the bottom line is I stopped paying attention, and I strayed.

So here I am, belly up, ready to begin anew. Ready to start feeling better again.

I need to make it 3 days to get rid of these cravings. Anyone have any helpful advice?

Other then using some duct tape, all I can say is perservere. Three days is not that long of a time to get through. Just be stronger then the cravings.

I know, hard to do at times but totally possible if you're determined enough.

For me, it's making sure that I eat plenty of meat which fills me up and then I don't feel like I could eat another bit. That helps me with cravings. I do still eat cheese and I would like to get rid of that habbit but for now, one thing at a time. It has helped me some stay away from worse choices. You can do it!

Hey join the club! I'm doing pretty now though actually, but I did pack on 5 fast pounds by my crazy eating.

My recommendation, you've already done. You've confessed to it and now you're accountable to all of us. That usually works for me. My other technique is to just stick to low carb and perhaps have a few not-paleo things until the carb monster is back in his cage. That's actually where I am right now. I found sugar-free popsicles keep me from eating truly horrible stuff. And these chocolate creations I'm making every day keep me very happy, and nicely low carb.

Refocus on eating lots of meat. I made a turkey breast and I'm stuffing myself silly with it, I truly don't even want to eat when I'm full of meat. Eating lots of salads too. The key for me is to get the pleasure I seem to be seeking but in ways that are better, if not perfect.

I've even regressed to having cream in my coffee. As a side-effect my nose is stuffy at night and I'm constipated like crazy. Oh well, it is nearly gone.

I too have been totally overdosing on heavy cream and just generally fallen off the wagon. Meats and salads and veggies. Keep it simple, stupid. That's for me, not you. :D

Just think about all of us here, cheering you on. You can do it!

3 days from now you will feel so much better and you'll look back to now and wonder why you thought it would be hard.

Not sure if this will help or not, but I know I get inspired when I read your posts. You make me think about views on nutrition and what I'm really meant to be eating.

You can do ANYTHING for 3 days. And once you're done with the 3 days, you'll feel so much better and centered. You may even be better able to deal with the things going on in your life.

Maybe get some of your favorite paleo foods?

In any case, we'll be cheering you on, as Kallyn said.

Maybe some reading about the evils of the American diet would help you? The new Taubes book is giving me extra resolve.

An old standby for me is to make one of my favorite LC dishes to eat whenever the craving hits. This time around, I'm snacking on butter hoping the extra fat will kill cravings. I'm also planning to stay away from any sweetened drinks.

Good luck! (to both of us!)

I also agree with the fill up with meat suggestions; if you have any junk food in your house, give it away, or chunk it. ASAP.

Think about your health, and how precious it is.

You can do it, man.

Thanks everybody. It's almost 8pm and I have that feeling that I'm going to make it today. The feeling, you know, when you're getting back on track?

Some good advice here... and I am following most of it. I agree that having a day or two of mostly meats and fats might be good. Those cravings sneak up behind you when you start to get lax!

I fixed my scales. Eight pounds heavier. Bleck!

Thanks again for the kind wishes of support everyone. You're right, MandalayVA, when we don't keep it simple it is a form of stupidity, and I'm grossly guilty. 'Nuff said.

In case your still having problems, I have two tips to offer. My two main reccomendations are must-dos for me for jumping back on the ol' wagon.

1. Avoid absolutely all sweet things. Even things remotely sweet– like vitamin C tablets! And especially fruit, artificial sweetners etc. I find when I eat only savoury my cravings diminish considerably.

2. Keep busy. Always have something to do. Preferably out of the house. Or if you have to stay at home and you're like me and you link watching tv/movies to eating then read up on the news, blogs, this forum of course, or go and buy/borrow a page-turning book that you will not be able to put down (even if it's to put something in your mouth!)

Yay Day 2! We're with ya :)

What I do is let myself eat as much as I want of any LC food until I feel better. Lots of steak with butter seems to help.

Damn, steak and butter sounds good right now....

I can't think of anything more disgusting on a steak than butter... except of course for steak syrup (which I have a picture of on my cell phone... it's not food, it's not even what food eats).

The cocky demon can be a source of great amusement. Whenever my Feast Beast tells me something really stupid and I catch it, I laugh. When it tells me something really insidious and clever, and I catch it, I laugh harder. All it wants is to eat stuff I know is unhealthy.

Make sure you bookmark this thread, or print it out and scrap-book it. Don't forget. Forgetting is the one thing your Feast Beast can really use against you.

I forgot, and I ate at Famous Dave's. Actually, I've never eaten there before, but I got cocky. I ordered ribs and I barfed myself to sleep that night. Now I know what Dave is famous for.

MSG is not my friend.

Steak syrup???? Really??? Euuw.

And butter on steak is FANTASTIC. Coat steak with various spices, pan-sear a few minutes per side, then deglaze pan with butter and let it brown, and pour it (and all the spices and goodies from the pan bottom) on top. I could eat that every day.

Yeah! Confession seems to work for me too.

I've been LC good, but only so-so good on Paleo. I've been playing around with making a microwaveable, sugar-free molten chocolate cake and lets just say... I think I perfected it.

But I intend to have 3 days in a row coming up where I'm going to be sweet-free. No sweetness of any sort. I will probably go insane.

Hey Proteus, just out of curiousity, is there one certain kind of thing that is your downfall, or is it just a lax attitude that gets you?

I find that each and every slip on my part is caused by a baked item. It isn't the grain that's the issue, its the chewy bready texture that gets me, so I'm actively looking for some kind of compromise.

Nancy LC
Mon, Oct-22-07, 13:51
That's why I like bowl muffins, I can make/eat one and stop. I don't have any desire to binge on them. If I make a low carb coffee cake, I have a hard time stopping. Too many helpings!

If I could make one low carb cookie at a time, that'd be ideal. :)

Mon, Oct-22-07, 13:59
Baked items are my weakness too. I stay away from them now... not worth the trouble. And I'm the same as Nancy, I don't binge on bowl muffins either :)

Mon, Oct-22-07, 14:17
Yeah, peanut butter, and nut butters seem to get me off the wagon in a very insidious way. Whole raw nuts don't do that to me.

I suppose there are worse things to binge on, but I feel physically ill after eating it, even though me loves it soooo much.

I'm just driving through, I'm curious about paleo so I'm stalking paleo folks reading everything they have to say.
My ex mom-in-law is Lakota Sioux and believes that native americans have very high rates of diabetes because we were meant to be meat eaters. This makes sense to me, in light of my insulin resistance and glucose intolerance, (I am part Pima) and now that I've been on Atkins for a couple of months (give or take my birthday cake binge and halloween candy catastrophe) I'm looking at this Paleo business very seriously. :read:
I'm off to stalk more Paleo folks...

Cmcd1070, you should read Gary Taubes new book, "Good Calories, Bad Calories" he's got a section about Pima Indians and how poorly they far on carbs.

My neice's boyfriend is Chippwa, from N. Minnesota. Their native diet was wild rice, fish, game, berries. He says everyone in his family is getting diabetes and cancer like mad. I'm sure he's on the way too, he is packing on the weight like crazy. I hate to see it, but I figure any intervention by me will lead to resistance to the idea.

steak butter and syrup ...

it sounds too good to me ....but then I am totally addicted to the point of no end a true sugar junky ...

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for the book advice, that's great! I know they did a lot of research on Pima's and the high rate of diabetes (the highest rate of diabetes among any of the native tribes I believe) but I would definately love to read more on that. It is very sad to see. Most of my native friends are diabetic and very obese as well. We are all carb-addicts unfortunately. And you're right, it is hard to intervene. It's like trying to stop an alcoholic from drinking. :agree:
