Good question ... and one that is not addressed in her book. I would say that if you find a protein powder that is high protein, low-carb (not sweetened with fructose, etc.) to go ahead and use it if you are comfortable with stepping away from the plan. Generally, her approach is very much "all-natural" so I would think she wouldn't be fore it. On the other hand, I do know that she is now recommending supplementation so who knows? I think this is very much a YMMV thing... I have successfully used a soy-based protein powder myself throughout.

Hi All

I am just starting Schwarzbein - having been on Montignac which is quite similar. I have recently started doing BFL type exercises and have both whey protein and soy protein (big huge cans of each) and was wondering if it was acceptable on Schwarzbein - at first I thought probably not as it is manufactured - but as someone already said Schwarzbein is getting into supplements but the website is not yet showing what is available - it may turn out to be just vitamins.

Is anyone else doing Schwarbein and BFL type exercise?

probably the first of many questions from a newbie to the plan :daze:

Hi Everyone:

LOL, I just posted something about this in the Exercise forum.

Dr. Schwarzbein includes soy protein in her first book. I'm not sure, but I would guess that the unsweetened soy protein powder would be OK. However, it is considered a processed food. But then, so is soy protein, right?

I wondered about getting whey protein powder sweetened with stevia.

I have been using whey protein powder because I can't always stomach as much meat as I need to get my protein requirements, especially at breakfast. I have not found a whey protein powder that is exclusively sweetened with stevia. If anyone knows of one please let me know.

Hi Jen:

I found this link: http://jayrobb.com/jayrobwheypr2.html

There are also many more that are made with stevia if you do a search on google using the key words "protein-powder stevia".

I do not have an answer, but am curious, and enjoyed the discussion.

I have been looking at the cookbook by Dana Carpenter that has a lot of recipes that I have been wanting to try, although a lot use Splenda ( thought I could sub Stevia or Agave perhaps). I would like to know if there are any whey protien products without any sweetners ? I have found soy protien powders without but hesitate to use those very often because of having hypothyroidism and there is the school of thought that soy surpresses thyroid function. I am hoping for some brand names if anyone knows of one.

Thanks, Wanda! I don't know why I didn't think of that. I'm so used to ordering from Netrition I didn't think to look elsewhere!

I have an unsweetened rice protein powder made by Absolute. It is also non-GMO. You shouldn't have any difficulty getting unsweetened, unflavored protein powder (whey or rice). It's the flavored ones that usually have sweetener.

Good luck in your search!

Hi Everyone -

Since I just did a workout I had a shake with the Whey - but what I noticed when I entered it into fitday is that by using the whey the protein balance is way higher than the carb - although I don't want to consume a lot of carbs I am wondering if because the soy I have (14 carbs per scoop) would be a better choice in order to acheive the balance she recommends?

I did have a small really balanced breakfast about an hour before the workout - the only reason I had the shake is to follow the BFL principle of feeding the muscles after a workout.

Sorry If this question sounds silly but I am really confused over the best thing to do.

I have noticed that Schwarzbein sales protein powder on her site so it must be okay. She just doesn't like you to have shakes in place of meals because it enters your bloodstream to fast. I use whey protein and add it to recipes to give myself some extra protein.

Hey KoKo, I was on BFL right before I read the SPII book and I found that the exercises fit well with her recommendations. I just had to keep my cardio on 80% of my heart rate. I immediately lost 3 pounds the first week. While I was doing BFL I really wanted to add Pilates anyway, and add some healthy fats, so SPII program was exactly what I was looking for.

Too much soy protein is also hard on your kidneys.

Thanks Piano,

That's a good idea, I really think the muscles need xtra protein on lifting days - I'm glad it can fit into SP. We get the carbs we need to work out and the protein to feed those growing muscles. :D
