Carnivorous diet FAQ

Originally, I wanted to make this a Paleolithic diet FAQ, however since we are not in the Paleolithic Era I thought it was irrelevant. But even if you are not 100% carnivorous, keep reading, it's still relevant to the followers of the "Paleolithic" diet.

-What is a carnivorous diet?

-A carnivorous diet is one that consists of animals.

-Why should humans eat carnivorously? Are they carnivores?

-A carnivore is defined as:

1-An animal that eats flesh.

2-A carnivore , meaning 'meat eater' (Latin meaning 'flesh' and carnevorare meaning 'to devour'), is an animal with a diet consisting mainly of meat, whether it comes from animals living or dead (scavenging). Some animals are considered carnivores even if their diets contain very little meat but involve preying on other animals (e.g., predatory arthropods such as spiders or mantids that may rarely consume small vertebrate prey). Animals that subsist on a diet consisting only of meat are referred to as obligate carnivores. [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivore#Obligate_carnivores)

3-Carnivora[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivora): The diverse order Carnivora (IPA: /ˈkɑː(ɹ)nɪˌvɔːɹə/ or /kɑː(ɹ)ˈnɪvəɹə/; from Latin carō (stem carn-) "flesh", + vorāre "to devour") includes over 260 species of placental mammals. Members of the order are called carnivorans, while the word "carnivore" can refer to a meat-eating animal of any type.

Although humans are not included, we should be and we share alot with them:

-Carnivorans are primarily terrestrial and usually have strong sharp claws, with never less than four toes to each foot, and well-developed prominent canines and cheek teeth(premolars and molars) that generally have cutting edges.

*In contrast to the tiger, Emperor penguins show that teeth and claws are not necessary to be a carnivore. They feed on crustaceans, fish, squid, and other small marine life.

-Members of Carnivora have a characteristic skull shape with relatively large brains encased in a heavy skull.

-Carnivora have a simple stomach designed to digest primarily meat, as compared to the elaborate digestive systems of herbivorous animals which are necessary to break down tough, complex plant fibers. The caecum is either absent or short and simple, and the colon is not sacculated or much wider than the small intestine. Most species of Carnivora are, to some degree, omnivorous, except the Felidae, which are obligate carnivores. Most have highly-developed senses, especially vision and hearing, and often a highly acute sense of smell in many species, such as in the Canoidea. They are excellent runners: some long-distance runners, but more commonly sprinters. Even bears and raccoons, although seemingly slow and clumsy, are capable of remarkable bursts of speed.

-Carnivorans include carnivores, omnivores, and even a few primarily herbivorous species, such as the giant panda. Important teeth for carnivorans are the large, slightly recurved canines, used to dispatch prey, and the carnassial complex, used to rend meat from bone and slice it into digestible pieces. Omnivores, such as bears and raccoons, have developed blunt, molar-like carnassials. Carnassials are a key adaptation for terrestrial vertebrate predation.

-Carnivora tend to produce a single litter annually, but some produce multiple litters a year, and larger carnivores like bears have gaps of 2-3 years between litters. The average gestation period lies between 50-115 days, although the ursids and mustelids have delayed implantation, thus extending the gestation period 6-9 months beyond the normal period. Litter sizes are usually small, ranging from 1-13 young, which are born with underdeveloped eyes and ears. In most species, the mother has exclusive or at least primary care of the offspring. Many species of carnivores are solitary, but a few are gregarious.

-So how does one implement this diet?

-I'm assuming most of the readers are already following the "Paleolithic diet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet)" so the transition is very simple but requires some effort to ensure the best health possible.

The majority/all of your diet will come from animals and animal by products, some include plants once in a while or in very small amounts.

Here are some useful guidelines*:

1. Eat only from the animal kingdom.

2. Avoid eating carby animal food, like lactose (dairy) and more than a very small, occasional, few ounces of liver. Do not measure what you eat and do not worry about variety.

3, Do as little cooking of your food as you can tolerate. Eat the fatty part preferentially in each meal first, then finish as much of the lean as you want. Leftovers will keep.

4. You do not need 'recipes' or 'sample meals' to follow. When away from home, no matter if it is a restaurant, family or friends, or business meal, eat only from the animal kingdom, avoid the rest, practice doing this unassumingly and make pleasant, distracting comments if bailed up on it.

5. Learn to politely refuse alcohol.(The Bear) [3] (http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/2006/05/how-about-zero-carb-carniverous-diet.html)

6. Include organs in your diet

7. Make bone broth with neck bones, oxtail, feet and whole fish, this will make you meet your daily requirement for calcium/other minerals and provide lots of nutrients for optimal health.[4] (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISW/is_259-260/ai_n10299306/pg_1)

8. This is a high fat diet not a high protein one, failure to do so could result in rabbit starvation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation), failure to keep the ratios optimal will result in lethargy and no fat loss. 70%-30% fat-protein, 80%-20% are good ratios.

-Isn't it dangerous to be eating like this?

-That depends, if you sprinkle rat poison on your food, definitely, if you don't then no, this is the healthiest way to eat. Proof is provided below.

-I workout/run/swim about 5 times a week at high intensity, that would be impossible without carbs!

-Correct, for the 1st few days you will feel tired and different on almost zero carbs, that will change however. After a few weeks you'll be able to work out like you used to, the more you stay on this diet the better it gets. Working out on zero carbs is easier and more beneficial that working out with carbs. It is very important that you maintain a high intensity exercise program, not just for fat loss, but for the NUMEROUS health benefits, you are robbing your health if you don't workout.

" What all these people (and animals) have in common is their carbohydrate free diet. Fat is the best fuel for an athlete, carbohydrates are the worst. It really is as simple as that."[Source] (http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/athletic_diet.html)

-I can't go to the bathroom....is this normal?

-Why should you? unless you are the follow the Shit Alot Diet (S.A.D) you don't have to have a bowel movement everyday. But do make sure that you are getting adequate fat and drink enough water to satisfy your thirst. Alot of cheese tends to slow things down, while coffee tends to speed things up, however coffee on this diet can cause diareaha for some, so drink it at home first.

-What about fiber?

-Fiber, a great idea, why not eat indigestible material and let it pass through you, why not eat newspaper paper then, without the ink ? same concept, it contains no calories, no nutrients and fiber actually blocks the absorption of some nutrients. It gives me the worst stomach pains and have noticed no improvement from it, only harmful effects. Already wrote a post about it here and how it became popular, not for the squeamish. LINK (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showpost.php?p=6980365&postcount=11)

-I'm not hungry in the morning, at lunch or even dinner! sometimes I eat once a day, sometimes I skip days and sometimes I eat all day long, is this normal?

-The human body is not simple math, you do not need to feed it every day at a certain time or everyday for that matter, hunger varies for reasons, listen to your body, if you are not hungry, don't eat. If you are not thirsty, do you drink anyway? If your foot is not broken, do you put it in a cast anyway?

Not to mention fasting, intentional or unintentional, raises BMR and there are some other benefits from it shown below.

"Although prolonged total starvation is associated with an absolute reduction in basal metabolic rate (BMR), during the first 2 days of starvation there is often a small absolute increase in BMR relative to values obtained after an overnight fast" [5] (http://www.unu.edu/unupress/food2/UID07E/uid07e11.htm)

-I started the diet yesterday, but I feel sick, is this normal?

-This is usually reported after starting the Paleolithic diet, due to the sudden elimination of grains, it goes away within 1-4 weeks. Transition from the Paleolithic diet to a carnivorous diet will be alot smoother.

-What about fruits and vegetables?

-I personally don't eat them often, sometimes I'll use some onions or eggplants and certain spices, but that's about it. The health effects of fruits and vegetables are highly exaggerated. However carnivores are known to eat preys stomachs, full of fermented/digested plant materials.

-What about money? I can't afford beef ribeye everyday.

-This diet might seem expensive, but it is not. First, when you eat this way, you will be following the healthiest diet available, you will not need to spend alot of money on "medical" conditions and illnesses as most people do, you will get sick less often and in half the duration of other people and your mind and body will improve.

Not all of us have the "luxury" to expensive cuts everyday, you can however more than make up for it by buying alternate high fat cuts and foods(listed below) and go hunting. Hunting without guns is one of the greatest pleasures in the world, it can also provide you with over 100lbs of meat in a single hunt, some of us are lucky to be close enough to hunting areas, some need trucks with deep freezers. If you choose to stick on this diet for life, that will cut your expenses in half.

-Country style pork ribs-BBQ

-Cut 2 whole eggplants into slices, fry them in 4 sticks/1lb of butter, they absorb it all, add a tiny bit of salt on them.....they taste great.

-Chicken thighs with skin-BBQ

-Take cheap pot roast cuts, ask for fat from the meat section/butcher(free), cut into small pieces and cook in stock pot or crock pot, add plants as needed.

-80%20% fat/protein burgers, they make em if you ask for them, but expect stares.

-Butter, I use about 1/2lb on days I eat.

-Wax worms, very fatty and tasty, fried in butter, salt and paprika.

-Ribs(Any animal)

-Beef tripe

-Beef tongue, tastes nasty in a crock pot btw, cut thin and fry with onions in butter or smother with fat and grill.

-Butter, table cream, heavy cream, hard cheeses with 0g carbs, sour cream with 0g carbs.

-Any cut of meat that has marbling and visible fat, there are always deals going on, look for them.

-Check yellowpages.com for Meat-wholesale/markets around your area, if you are going to stick with this diet, investing in a big quality deep freezer and visits to meat wholesale/markets.

Finally, This was done to help newbies avoid the mistakes I made and a refresher for the older carnivores, I know it is not very complete but it is a good start and I will be editing and adding more info bi-weekly in the same original post. If you have any information you want me to add, PLEASE, PM 1st and your effort will be recognized. This is not a debate post, I do not care if you agree or disagree, move over to the war zone or start your own post.

I want to thank any member who has directly or indirectly helped me in anyway to improve my diet and provided some of the information I have included here.

Again, Please DO NOT post questions or comments in this thread as it will surely turn into a debate by trolls, be moved into the war zone and then locked, PM me for any changes, wrong info or additions and it will be done, thanks.
