I know there are hidden carbs in low-carb bars - they stalled my weight lose, but what about Ready to Drink Shakes? I am looking at one that claims 2 grams of carbs in their Chocolate Fudge Shake (2 g dietary Fiber and less than 1 gram sugar) can I trust that?

Are there any clues in the ingredients I should be aware of?

Thank you for any help!!!

You bet there are :) Things like glycerine and sugar alcohols (malitol, sorbitol, manitol - the 'ols') are generally responsible for the hidden carbs in bars - they are used to give them that 'mouth appeal' - texture, taste, smoothness, etc. This isnt usually a problem with shakes.

You would be on the lookout for the sweetner with a shake - aspartame is now a :nono: with Atkins. You are permitted Splenda (sucralose) however.

I use a protein shake every day - sometimes twice a day - to get my levels of protein up to an acceptable level for weight lifting and muscle growth and I have had no ill effects from the shakes I have used.

When in doubt as to carb count, remember, we have a Hidden Carb Counter on this site, under Low Carb Tools (it is the second link on that page). You can punch your numbers in to get the real count on any food item.

I had never tried the Hidden Carb Counter. I entered the Shake into it and it came back with 3.45 grams of carbs - I was not convinced. I then when to my cardboard and retrevied a dusty low carb bar that claims only 3 grams of carb and to my total amazement is calulated 23 grams of carbs (which I know to be correct)!! :daze: HOW IT DO THAT??

Now armed with this amazing site I will be more confident when I buy low carb products!!

Thank You Nat!!!
