What is the most dangerous carb category for you?
By dangerous, I mean:
eating it gives you unpleasant physical/psychological symptoms
you crave it
if you eat some of it, you can't stop/crave more
if it's in the house/on your partner's plate, you are fixated on it
you're certain it causes weight gain disproportionately to carb content

My only encounter with grains has been flour in gravy that I got by accident - the headache that ensued was most unpleasant. I don't crave them, nor do I go bananas (!) watching my boyfriend have some rye bread. I've just had a very bad reaction to grain on one occasion.
The others don't really apply - I eat fruit regularly and I've had potato skins and plan on having them again - they were great. But there are no 'craving' or 'emtional' issues associated with them. Sugar I just can't avoid completely - it is in some things and Cuba seems to have cured me of the 'hidden sugar headache' effect - all those blender drinks.
I know that when I am on maintenance I will be eating fruit, veggies (including potatoes - at least the skins ;) ) and some unavoidable sugar - but I dont plan on adding grains back in. They have a very bad rap in my book

I'm not sure this is really a "category" in the sense that Nat's was, but it's my danger food no matter how ya cut it.
I CANNOT have pastry-things in the house. CANNOT. I bought some donut holes for my Kelley a couple of months ago, and it was agony having to move them out of the way to get to my vitamins in the morning. (Counter space is at a premium in my kitchen. :) ) I know if I ate one, I'd have eaten the entire container. And I know I'd have had headaches, GI issues (as it were), and all kinds of other unpleasantness.
It's tough walking past a bakery in a mall, or even on the street. I used to *love* cream-filled chocolate-frosted pastries (here we call them "Bavarian creams," I'm not sure if that's the name elsewhere). I could (and did) eat a half-dozen at once. I bet I still could--but I won't. It wouldn't be worth how awful I would feel afterward.
I'm seriously considering restricting Kelley's sugar intake; she's not even 5 yet, she's wearing a size 6/6X (mostly, sometimes that's a little snug depending on the cut but 8's are WAY too big), and she weighs 50lbs. I really don't want her to have a childhood like mine, being "the fat kid" in school whose mother had to make all her clothes because there was literally nothing in the stores that was child-appropriate in the right size. Maybe I'll post something about that in the LC Parents forum, huh? Sorry for the digression, but this just got me thinking.....

You should have added Dairy, I can easily over dose on cream cheese, heavy cream, or sour cream.
Chocolate and nuts are my other weakness...

Raz where is the chocolate button?
Forget sugar, potatoes, grains and fruits.....chocolate is it's OWN food category!

My danger foods are anything with the combo of flour, sugar and fat. Cookies, cakes, donuts,... Those types of foods always get my craving machine rolling.
Since I can't eat just one, I won't be eating any. But that's OK, cuz I have found some of the most delectable ways to mix cream cheese, jello or pudding, and whipping cream!

okay, I'll admit it! I've not designed perfect categories...and I bet the combination of flour/sugar is a common one, TX!...but I still am curious about the comparative dangers for a larger group of these four general categories. I see that so far, no fruit bingers have replied.

I have to admit, Raz, this made me chuckle - then I thought about it. When I started this WOE I thought that giving up all the fruit I had become acustomed to eating was going to be tough - but it wasn't. And I used to go through a lot of fruit. Milk was another sore spot and for the first week I continued to ration some of my carbs so I could have a small glass - until I realized I prefered water.
Looking over my menus for the last 6 months I see all kinds of veggies (and more recently, fruits) and I wonder how it would be possible to miss the fresh, crunchy stuff. I eat more veggies now than I ever did. I think LCers eat a more balanced variety of food than those following 'prescribed nutritional guidelines'. And now I am rambling.

Chocolate and pastries are the biggies for me. Sometimes I could take 'em or leave 'em.
Other times, I throw caution to the wind and have a "little party in my mouth" as Oprah's Dr. Phil would say ;)

Bread and rice.
I live downwind from a Wonder Bread factory. While I haven't eaten white bread in a decade, I have to admit that sometimes in the summer, when it's 4 in the morning, really hot and humid, can't sleep a wink -- and all the windows wide open for the slightest breeze -- the smell of fresh-baked bread will waft in, and drive me nuts!
Don't have much of a sweet tooth. Chips and nachos - I definitely cannot stop at just one, but if they're not around I don't crave or think about 'em at all.

Oh my lord, I love pastry! Any kind! :bhug: Flakey pastry wrapped around some bavarian cream. Put a pie in front of me and I don't really care what kind it is because the pastry is the best part! :rheart: Meat pies, same thing! I don't care what's in the package, it's the wrapper I love! :doah: Mmmmm... pastry.....
Oh gawd, I feel a craving coming on.... :(
Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must resist Tim Hortons!!
Whew, that was fun! I think I need a cigarette now!

Hmm. I can and do live surrounded by all of the above and I do not crave it. I can touch it, smell it and even taste it. I don't even like the sensation of sugar on my tongue. It feels caustic.
It's not the food, but what is in my mind that may send me on a binge. Sugar is my drug of choice - flour/fruit/cream/nuts are just the vehicle - and a binge usually start in early evening at work. If I start I can't stop because when I crash, I turn into a raving hag and feel stupider than I already do for starting in the first place. I usually follow it up by some Hagen Dazs that I will pick up on the way home. It's better to go into a sugar coma near a couch.
The sensation feels physical, like going into a closet and locking the door. I can actually hear the click. Then it's just me and the food. Not even the light of day can come between us.
The next day is the hangover and anywhere from 4-8 pounds of water to deal with.

Fruit is something I have to be very carefull of, because i love it, and a half a cup of berries seems so little. Especially when fresh strawberry season is just around the corner. What I dearly miss is melon. I used to eat a half of one thinking fruit was good diet food.
Oddly, I have had no cravings for bread at all. There are too many other good things to eat to waste stomach space on bread.

I must agree that chocolate should be a separate category. Can we have a separate category for Big Kats actually? Those things are the bane of my existence.

I'm back,
I already said that pastry in any form was it, but since we're adding chocolate as it's own group, I need to change my vote! I LOVE CHOCOLATE!!
I used to buy 2 Mirage bars at a time, because 1 wasn't enough.
My landlady works in the warehouse at Rogers Chocolates here in Victoria, and brings me chocolate all the time. I can't tell you how much my friends have been enjoying it lately! I don't dare keep it in the house. I will have a meltdown if I do!
One of the things that I like about the Suzanne Somers plan is that once you are in maintenance, you can have dark chocolate (low sugar), and that's my favorite! I can't wait!!!

When I first started low carb dieting the chocolate was the hardest thing for me to live without. I truely believe it's the main reason I was over 80 pounds overweight as I can't seem to control myself when it's around. Now there are all these great tasting low carb chocolate bars on the market so I don't get the cravings nearly as bad. I count on needing to keep my house stocked with them for the rest of my life.
What does me in is bread, cookies and crackers. I have a almost 3 year old so of course these things are in the house and I sometimes find myself eating just one. I mean that is only 7 carbs right? But before I know it I have eaten 5 of them and my weight loss for that day has been pretty much blown. I haven't yet found a low carb bread or cracker that satisfies this craving though I do hope there is something out there.
I also would love to binge on fruit but have an easier time controling myself with it. Maybe becuase it's more filling?
Take care,
allisonm

Hey Elisabeth! Look out for those "low-carb" chocolate bars. They're loaded with carbs -- use the hidden carb tool under "tools" at the top of the page on the orange bar. Those blasted Carbolite chocoate bars have gotten me in trouble over and over again.
Just last night, in fact, I used a ketosick and it was pink. I then immediately ate three tiny squares of Carbolite chocolate and had nothing else, not even water. Twenty minutes later I tried a ketostick again out of curiosity -- NO PINK AT ALL. This is not the best way to test your reaction to a food, but it does give some indication of what's going on.
(For a real testing method, see Karen's thread on doing your own low-carb research. It involves stabbing your fingers for blood samples; I'm a coward.)
I currently get my chocolate fix by mixing whey protein isolate (zero carbs, zero flavor), super premium cocoa powder (some carbs, some fiber), a bit of sucralose, and water. I add a significant amount of cocoa powder to that mix. I call it chocolate milk and it makes me very happy.
Before you eat another bite of that chocolate, check for hidden carbs so you know what you're getting into.

There are three *excellent* lowcarb breads I enjoy. They're varieties produced by Natural Ovens of Manitowoc (based here in WI), and they sure solved my "no bread" dilemma.
Look for them in the regular bread aisle of your supermarket. The varieties are Hunger Filler (only 8 ECC!), 100% Whole Grain (9 ECC), and Sunny Millet (also 9). Someone at Natural Ovens realized the niche for lowcarbing, because the Hunger Filler label even reads "Our lowest carb bread"!!
I love 'em, that's all there is to it. Good flavor, wonderful texture, and they're tasty right out of the bag or toasted. Keep them in the freezer or the fridge for best "shelf life." Good hunting to you!

Hi Allison,
Okay I guess I just don't get it. I am mentally scratching my head. I have here a atkins Endulge bar. Supposed to be 2 carbs but after doing the calculations it was over 6 carbs. But aren't those extra 4 carbs supposed to be undigestable? I know I used to measure my ketosis daily with the keto sticks and never noticed a difference when I had a bar.
Maybe some people metobolize things differently. My husband for instance can have over 80 carbs a day and still stay in ketosis but if he drinks a glass of wine he drops completly out of ketosis for at least two days. I, on the other hand, can't have that many carbs but can have up to three glasses of wine and stay deeply in ketosis as long as the rest of my carbs are around 20 - 30. His body just doesn't handle alcohol at all.
Karen I hope I can find that bread here. I tried some muffins which were decent but they were too sweet. When I was testing to see how many carbs I can have and still stay in ketosis I had one slice of whole wheat bread a day. It was wonderful. I hadn't realised how much having a slice of toast in the morning had been a part of my daily life till I did that. Once I am into maintanence I think that may be something I reintroduce to my diet. Just one though, 18 carbs for one item is really limiting. Now if I can find some other low carb bread..... I would be in heaven:)
take care,
KarenB

I'll take a stab at the hidden carbs issue. I quit using *any* brand of low-carb bars quite some time ago--and I was a heavy user, too. I'd eat three or four of 'em in a day.
Yes, those "other" grams of carbs are supposed to be undigestible. They're glycerine, or sugar alcohols, or both. However, just because they don't affect your blood sugar/insulin doesn't mean they don't affect you at all. For me, they caused stalls. For some other folks, they stop ketosis pronto. Maybe you'll be one of the people they don't affect at all. If so, that's great for you. But it's still important to be aware of just how many grams of carbs you're ingesting. The only ones Atkins allows you to subtract from your daily count are those from fiber. These "hidden" ones still count against your daily total. So, if you've been counting 2g, and you eat four of those things that are really 6g, that's 24g of carbs already, not the 8g you *were* counting--and you haven't even had any veggies!
YMMV, of course, but for my money I'm way better off without the "fake food." I'd rather spend my carbs on good lowcarb bread and tasty veggies and unsweetened blackberries, than glycerine and sorbitol/maltitol/etc.
Best of luck to you, whatever you decide about the bars. The main thing is to learn what works *for you* and stick with it. :)

Wow! 24 Carbs! That really hurts. I rarely have more than 1 bar a day and usually only a few times a week. But every once in a while I eat several of them. I didn't notice a weight loss stall but I wasn't paying close attention at those times either. I am going to have to monitor this more closely. Thanks for the heads up.
I was wondering if you had a specific recipie for that chocolate milk you make.
Take care,

I lived on fruit for many years, breakfast, lunch and a little for any snacks. It's hard to choose which one is the worst - I'd say all the above and chocolate (or is it that choc always comes with sugar).
Best to just stay completely off - albeit it feels hard some days.
Take care.

...and Fatty. Hi, I'm Joanie and I'm a JUNK FOOD JUNKIE. Could happily eat that stuff morning noon and night forever (or until I died of malnutrition). My favorite is to take whatever sweet thing I'm eating and go back and forth with something salty. You know...Twinkies and Cheetos back and forth...or Krispy Kremes and Doritos, or M&Ms and potato chips. All very healthy stuff, all very low carb. ;)
Now, it's important to state that whatever my junk item is, it has to have a lot of fat, too. I don't get excited about a piece of apple, then a pretzel (I do like apples and cheese, but not in that 'bing-y sort of way...)
Anyway, I didn't get fat eating just any old carbs. I got fat eating junk food. 'Nuff said.

I used to love bread. I loved it so much, I never had to put butter on it, took away from the taste. I would eat bread and olive oil for dinner, as my whole meal. Rice too. When I was growing up one of my favorite dishes was rice with milk, sugar and rasins. It was delicious!
I used to crave potato chips too. But now, if I don't think about them and find other comfort foods, like diet coke or cool whip. And when I am upset there is nothing better than chomping on celery.
I have been eating the Atkins Endulge chocolate bars, about .5 bar every other day (I do not crave chocolate). They do not seem to have any effect, I have stayed in moderate ketosis. But my weight loss has been slower than I expected, so I keep an eye on the chocolate bars.
No more bread, no more rice....

I don't think it is any one thing, but what it is or the way it is presented for meself.
I cannot think of a single loaf of bread, cake, or pastry at the grocery store that I would have the impetus to buy, even if they were mystically transformed into LC, but walk by a French patissere with its heavenly wafts of crusty bread and jewel-like confection...
I am sure I have scared the patrons inside such shops, with my face pressed up against the glass, wild eyes peering in maniacally (I dare not step inside!) I should feel sorry for the man who cleans the windows... all that slobber.
Having said that, there is nothing like freshly made pomme frites either. I was of the opinion that chips have now grown palid and uninteresting. I discovered, again, that it has to do with how they are made. Cut to scene in French restaurant: My poor bf and I looking at each other, horrified, that I had thoughtlessly consumed a quarter portion of his pomme frites! My brain went blank, I guess. Reception problem! :daze: "You're going to be really annoyed at yourself," he says calmly. And I was. If I was going to 'cheat', I should have gotten the escargot encased in puff pastry!! Fade out scene to black.
Fortunately, they did not accompany me to the scale the next day, although I can't help thinking that I have impeded my own progress. Bad! Bad Sock! :nono:
Sorry... this isn't the confession line, but I just have to declare that danger lurks even in the most 'civilized' of environs, awaiting to deviously spring when you least expect it! Bwa-ha ha HA!!!!

What is interesting about this tread is that there are so many similarities, and so many varieties in the foods that cause problems. We all have some triggers that may cause problems for us. Determining what those foods are is an individual thing - then determining how we will respond to them is also an individual thing. I used to LOVE my breads and baked goods - lived for them :( Since starting my lcwol, haven't had a single piece of bread - whether low carb or not. I just don't trust myself, after going through the "withdrawal" period. And, I now realize that I probably am "sensitive" to wheat, so I am so much healthier when I just stay away from it. It is interesting though, that very small amounts don't seem to bother me, or turn on any cravings - for that I am thankful. :)
I still hate to pass a really good bakery - more for the memories of what I think they used to taste like, or do for me - but I don't let my resolve waver. I sometimes even cross to the other side of the street, to avoid the sight and smells that eminate - why test myself when I don't have to?
I have also learned in my recent research that most commercially baked goods have what is called "hydrogenated" fats in them, and these things are poison for our bodies - it also helps me to keep my resolve, cause I want to continue to feel and be healthy :D It is really wonderful at 50+ to feel better than I did when I was in my 20's - a REALLY BIG motivator for me!
I do allow myself some lc baking - that I do myself, so I know exactly what is in the item that I eat. I use splenda when I bake and find that it works for me, without any cravings or need to splurge. I just watch what I put in my mouth very carefully, and use nuts and other lc snacks to keep me going between meals.
I have started having serious doubts about all the lc bars on the market - I use them on a regular basis, but never more than one a day - still the recent research on the hidden carbs really makes me mad. And when you check the labels, they all say that because "glycerine is not a carbohydrate, it is not included in the carb count" - I don't know how they can get away with this sort of dishonesty. Ithought that the USDA was going to come down on them for the labelling - maybe it still is :exclm:
Anyway, we each have to do the best we can with our individual metablolisms, cravings and solutions. It sure does help to have a forum like this one to air our thoughts, and get such great support.
Cheers
razzle

some excellent points made in these posts! thanks, people. :)
These comments reminded me too that something I've discovered is that a tiny amount of sugar doesn't cause cravings for me. I can have a half-piece of regular gum or a mint someone offers and while it may well slow my loss, I don't wildly seek out more pieces of gum the next three days or mentally fixate on the topic. I wouldn't trust a single Hershey's kiss, tho! Similarly, soy flour coating on a piece of fried fish or chicken doesn't bother me...but I'd be reluctant to try a whole bunch of it at once, fearing real problems as a result.

Although I've always loved sweets, I am a woman you know!
I would have to say I'm definitely a starch addict. Back in my old habit days, it was no problem eating a box of kraft dinner, a plate of spaghetti, 6-8 pieces of white bread, bagels, or a huge cooking bowl of white rice at one sitting.
I know for me, right now in my journey I can not eat "none" of these foods, absoultely NONE, it will send me off to a binge frenzy blowout! :daze:

I think that the problem here is that we all love all the naughty foods. I mean really.... think about it.
Growing up I used to eat beefsteak tomatoes right off the vine, with a little salt. Hey, this was allowed, I wasnt eating junk food eh?
We still love (okay, past tense) to have "corn fests" with world famous Taber corn. All we would do is boil up a huge vat of corn on the cobb and dig in, sans beurre, only a little salt Yum!
Also, the one dinner veggie we both love and would always have is corn.
Bread. I found a wonderful bakery, which speciallizes in artesian breads. How does a nice round loaf, still warm of white cheese and black olive bread sound? Or even for decadent folks, pear and chocolate, apple cinnamon??
Chocolate - Kit Kat Large, Girl Guide Cookies, Malt Balls
And Fruit. Just what the heck am I supposed to do with my now very large patch of raspberries that I have been cultivating and caring for the last 5 years??? We normally have a nightly run to the patch with a bowl and some half and half cream! Bananas were/are my favorite next to all melons and strawberries.
I find it very very interesting that all the foods we previously thought of as "good" for us are actually very very naughty foods - in large frequent quantities. Kind of depression when you think about it!

Actually--you'll find that berries are among the *best* choices you can make if you're adding carbs and choose to do so by eating fruit! Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries (black and red).... all good options. So are melons with the exception of watermelon: cantaloupe, honeydew are fine in controlled quantity.
I *live* for my protein shake made with heavy cream and frozen blueberries. Makes it really really thick to the point where I need a spoon to eat it!
Don't give up on that berry patch--*enjoy* them when they're ripe off the bush! :D (With heavy cream and a little AS if you choose.... MMMMMmmmmmMMMMMMmmmmmm....)

Without a doubt 2 things... most any fruit pie (makes me nauseous) ... all I can figure it's the combination of hi fat and sugar and flour together... find myself running to for tha Gas-X.
the other is bread... I don't find I crave too many things anymore... and have tried a few of my old time favorite carb foods once I had broken my addiction to them... rice was one... and it no longer had that "orgasmic, melt into your chair" response like they used to... (chocolate lovers... does that addiction reaction sound familiar?)
But on my first Thanksgiving on this WOL, I had a couple of spoonfuls of stuffing... and I found myself almost uncontrollably wanting to binge... it was very uncomfortable... I did manage to resist, well, I had a little more with my meal, but I found that for about three days afterward, all the cravings that were there before Atkins, were back with a vengence. After that, I was ok again...
I've tried to recreate (it is good to learn how your body works, so long as you can feel confident that you know that craving is not you but addiction... so I find it "a bit" easier to resist) with other foods, even pasta and pastries, but it is bread that triggers the response with even a small amount of it...
I've never tried it with Wonderbread though... I'm not sure if that qualifies as bread...LOL... I may need to do more research.

I think flour makes me feel icky, bloated, gassy. I made a cream sauce at dinner time with milk, cream, butter and flour. I was low on my carbs today so I ate about 1/3 cup. That had less than 10 carbs in it. Now I feel a bit sick to my stomach. A while ago I lost my brain for a moment and ate a big bowl of chocolate icecream. I had the worst gas! My normally sweet husband was following me around with a lit match! OK,OK... I can take a hint! And then the next morning my hands were so swollen and hot and itchy from water gain! UGH! Will I ever learn?
So I think sugar and flour are my enemies. Especially when mixed. Like cookie dough. I havent' made cookies in a very long time. I know I will eat it, and once I get started, I can't stop! I wish I didn't crave the things that make me sick!

I have been in the habit for the last 20 years of having a couple of glasses of red wine before bed. On this diet this is a no-no  I have a very difficult time with this....I guess I'm addicted. But I do love how it relaxes me, and makes me sleepy. If I fail this diet it is because of this habit.... I find it VERY difficult to not have my wine at night....I am SO used to it! :spin:

Dear Susann...
yeah, addictions it seems, have two components... the chemical dependency and the psychological dependency. At least for me, the chemical dependency was broken after the two week induction, which is why it's so strict... the harder part was breaking the habits that provided the opportunities to get re-addicted. It's like trying to go to the movies and not buy the popcorn... one just belonged with the other. In talking with others who have been successful, it seems to take about 6 - 9 months of steady WOE to give the new behaviors time to get established as habits, and the old behaviors to be replaced or forgotten. After that, this WOE becomes a WOL...
Good luck.

Susanna,
Hang in there!! Take it one night at a time. I had a similiar (well actually opposite) problem with cafiene in my coffee, it does get better. Could you try a decafinated herbal or berry tea before going to bed?
My biggest carb danger food, one that almost always starts me on a binge is donuts. I used to bring donuts in to work fequently, of course they weren't really for me  ,they were for everyone else, but I did seem to eat the most. For a while I thought I couldn't stop because I always bought a dozen of my favorite donuts. So every time I walked by the box I would see my favorite kind. Then I tried buying only a couple of my favorites and the rest of the donuts that I didn't like. I reasoned I would then walk by the box and see the kind I don't like and keep right on walking. Well, I found, there never has been made a donut that I do not like
Donuts are definately a danger food.

BREAD! Any kind of bread, especially the hearty specialty loaves, but if they aren't available I can binge just as happily on sliced bread.
I've seldom been able to just eat a normal serving; one piece of bread and I'm ready to down the whole package/loaf. After a carb-binge I can't do anything but sleep for hours; it's like being on a drunk for me!
Great poll!

The thing about habits is that they took a long time to form and become a habit, so it is likely that it will take a while before they are broken and new habits are formed. :( It seems so obvious that it is easy to forget.
I was a smoker years ago - it took me 5 or 6 tries over a couple of years before I finally did quit. And I haven't had even a puff of a cigarette since - I know it would be my downfall. I try to concentrate on all the positive things about not smoking, and now I am rarely even tempted.
I have had a similar experience with my LC WOL. It does take a while to stop the old habits of bread or baked goods or a baked potato - but the pay off is so huge in terms of health and wellness and weight and self confidence, that I am rarely tempted  When I am, I try to review in my mind what all these pluses are, and then think about how I will feel if I indulge  I know I will get bloated, have gas, maybe have symptoms of my digestive disease, feel sleepy, feel fuzzy headed - and then guilty or scared too :exclm: So, the pay off of not feeling any of this, and maintaining my weight usually wins ;)
I am as human as everyone else, and I do make bad choices from time to time. The other thing that I have learned is to forgive myself when I do, and get back on the LC wagon, so to speak.
A new habit is only formed over time by actually doing whatever it is we want to achieve. So, everytime that we opt for a LC food instead of a HC alternative, we are helping to create a LC WOL. After more than 2 years of living this way, it is truly automatic for me now, and the temptations are few and far between. And so many little tricks to make it easier are just second nature to me now. When I go to the movies (which I love), I just take a small baggie of nuts or sugar free candies in my pocket or my purse. So I don't have my popcorn anymore - I do have something to munch, and I always buy either a water or a diet drink. Like all new experiences, it takes some getting used to, but then you begin to think that this is the norm - your new habit is being formed :D
Just a few thoughts about how all this has worked for me. Just keep trying - it does become easier over time. And the rewards are fantastic :D
Cheers

:sunny: Thank you so much for the inspiration, I have been so determined on this WOL that I am starting to see a slight difference in how I look, also I have lost 3 pounds in the last 6 days and that is happiness :daze:
Today I went to the grocery store and bought some caffeine free teas... Both of them evening relaxers to try instead of the wine. I pray they will soon become a staple for me in the evening instead of the wine..... I realize it is going to take some time, but I am willing to hang in there just to feel better about myself again. I have to say I have received several letters of encouragement, and they mean so much to me . There is something comforting about knowing you are not alone in dealing with difficult issues. So thank you so very much for taking your time to encourage me.

Congratulations Sussan on your weight loss :)
Just keep trying and things do get easier. I also like the herb teas - they are better for you than regular tea which has caffeine, and they can help you fill full. Some of the flavors are delicious. For me, they also just provide me with something to do with my hands - other than put food in my mouth :exclm:
It is really great to see once again what a supportive group this is. Good luck with your journey :D

Mine has to be Mexican food! The combination of chips and guacamole makes my mouth water, and if it is in front of me, I will eat it...no choice there. I tried eating guacamole with pork rinds and it just doesn't work (too porky tasting).
And don't even get me started on enchiladas! ;)
If we go out to eat I usually get fajitas or chili rellano's a la carte, but if there is guacamole on the table, it is all over...

PS My picture is, in fact, at a b-day party at a local Mexican restaurant. What you don't see is the shot of Tequila in my hand, nor the guacamole on the table...Not a good night for me Atkins-wise... :nono:

I can resist high sugar items, and pastries (especially since I recently found out I'm very intolerant of cow dairy, grains and sugars. But fruit is extremely dangerous to me because 1. it is allowable, albeit in reduced amounts. 2. I find it hard to stop at a half or quarter of most fruits to stay within guidelines.3. I have my own fruit trees, and can get loads of free fruit. Arrrrggghhh! :D

I voted sugar although I can ignore it in most forms. However, there are these cookies made in my family that get me EVERY TIME!
They are called idiot cookies (or no bake cookies). Made on top of the stove with sugar, cocoa, milk, and butter (like fudge) and then peanut butter is added and oatmeal stirred in. When warm it brings me to my knees. I have also found that if I have a sugar elsewhere by accident or otherwise, it is practically impossible to resist the cookies.
Sad but true!!!

I can't figure out which category to check. There are only two foods that I fantasize about eating, one is fried chicken from a particular regional fast food joint, and the other is freshly squeezed orange juice. I think I could pour someone a glass of the orange juice without getting anxious, but there is no way I could have the fried chicken in my house. Or in my car on the way home from buying it. I used to buy their fried chicken and eat the skin and crust and feed the meat to my cat......

I just figured out what my awful headache is from~~~I had Roman Meal light bread toast this morning! The last time this happened I ate about 1/4 cup of Stove Top stuffing  In the way distant past I loved making real homemade bread, I guess I must be "allergic" to bread products, DARN!!!!! The really crappy thing is, I bought 5 loaves yesterday because I rarely see it at the little local store! Bagels...now that brings back memories of Middle/High School. My mom worked at an elementary school a couple miles from the middle school I attended. We'd get bagels, doughnuts, or biscuits for breakfast every morning. Only thing that kept them from sending my weight off the charts was that once I got to her school, I'd get my bike (which I left there) and ride it a couple miles to school, then when I'd get there I'd play sports until school began, then I'd play sports again after lunch, and at the end of the day. But, even all that exercise couldn't prevent the pounds from creeping on. It only kept them from exploding on as they did after 1999.
In High School, I went to summer school to earn extra credits...and during the summer, they didn't have regular lunches. They would set up a bagel stand and sell bagels. If you wanted something to drink, they had several Pepsi/Coke Machines. I loved the bagels and would sometimes buy more than 1.

Hmm. Sugar is the biggie for me, but it depends on what it is in. My biggest weakness is doughnuts (or any pastries, like others have said). Anything super refined--cake, white bread products--are a big no-no. Whole grain bread isn't a problem. Also, I can eat dark chocolate without it spilling over into the rest of my diet. I love potatoes and tend to feel guilty eating them (esp fries) but I don't know if I would call that a "danger" food. I don't have any problems with milk or dairy products as long as they don't have sugar. Yogurt sweetened with sugar is not a good thing.

I have a few very specific items:
1. Red cherry twizzler bites. I used to be able to eat an entire 1 lb bag in less than 20 mins. By the way this is the only food i can eat like that. Luckily husband doesnt like them!
2. snickers bars! I love the caramel chocolate and peanut taste, hense the reason I got addicted to choc. peanut butter atkins bars!
3. Dougnuhts-I never ate doughnuts before this WOE 9more than 1 everyother month) But now I crave them daily! My parking spot for work is right next to the best doughnut shop in town, and they pump out that glorious smell after work! Lucky for me it is after work and not in the morning! I have never cheated though!!!!
I have had none of these items for over 4 months!!! I am sure they are all better in my imagination than they ever were in real life! I also like all these items are bad for you in everyones opinion, so it isn't as hard to say no!

Apparently I am completely PMS (as in Post menstrual) becuase all these foods listed hold no interest for me. I am shocked! Usually I am weak when someone in the office pops popcorn in the microwave (there oughta be a law) or when someone brings in baked anything for a birthday (there really oughta be a law).
But I am so eager to cling to this new-found zeal that at this minute nothing can tempt me...
Woooohoooooooo! Ok this is usually when I crash and burn... I feel invincible, something yummy shows up, I convince myself I can handle just a little nibble (which I can't) ... and tomorrow I'm crying on the scale.
Didn't some psychologist say that recognition of a destructive behavior is half the battle of defeating it...

I picked Sugar, but what I really need is a salted nuts category... I could eat a whole can of nuts in one sitting.... I moved into (ongoing weight loss ) and went a bought a can of nuts intending to have "a few" every now and again and within 3 days the whole can is gone. I do not mean a small can I mean a big can. I did not know I was that triggered by nuts until now. So I gues my answer is "NUTS" :nono:

Since starting this diet I crave them all !! Oh the irressitible lure of the forbidden. Apricot Danishes, fresh bread with butter, Bagels with cream cheese, Krispy Kreme Donuts !!
I find out that it's not good for me to deprive myself too much. I eventually break-down. Lately what I have found that helps a lot is the low-carb bread I make myself. Makes it much easier to resist the lure of the morning danish.
I have found a decent solution for my chocolate addiction. I now buy 85% cocoa butter chocolate. They are very intense tasting so a little goes a long way. 2 squares usually satisfies me.

Well I voted for sugar but the truth is sugar is what I take my cravings out on. I can eat one bite of a soda cracker or have a little gravy on my meat and the next thing you know I'm devouring whatever sweet items I can get my hands on. My triggers are ALL refined carbo's but I will usually binge on sugar after I've been triggered. It is not a pretty sight. Abstinance.....I must learn total abstinance.

My danger carb food seems to be dairy. I love cream in my coffee, cheeses, cream cheese, and so on. A dessert mix of heavy cream, cream cheese, marscapone cheese, and splenda syrup is just heaven. I know I probably consume to much dairy and may switch some of my cream to LC soy milk (sigh)

I can crave any of those at one time or another. But chocolate is bad I even sneeze when consuming, but wont stop, knowing its an alergic reaction. After Valentines I went to the drugstore and big boxes were $2.00 so had to get 3 of them.Everything was fine until I opened the first one.I laid on the couch at night and ate all the chocolate off the centers, pick pick pick.Dont care for dark though, has to be milk.Cant have chips for cookies in the house either. I tell myself, just for baking, until I opened a bag of Garadili(sp) semi sweet. Can eat 3 bags in one week..Not good ..Oh and we have an Almond Roca warehouse a few miles away..Holidays etc.bargains galore, can eat twice as much..I have never seen this in print before......I see a problem....HUH :daze:

I love bread. All kinds of bread. Whole grain, white, bannock, etc.
I dodged a big 'carb bullet' today. FIL came with a huge plate of fried bannock, potato salad, and salmon. I had ONE bite of bannock - then literally ran out of the house. If I had stayed I would have cleaned off the whole damn plate.

I voted for sugar the first time I was on here (whenever that was) but I'm starting to think I have a new weakness: fruit juice. I'm terribly fond of exotic blends, smoothies, etc. I haven't eaten much sugar lately, but I keep buying those bottles of Naked fruit! Pomegranate and blueberry! Mango madness! And it is so tough to convince myself that they are bad for me! Argh!

I'm more of a "savory" aficionado.
What I miss most are chip-type snacks (tortilla chips, potato chips), fried potatoes (french fries, tater tots), and popcorn. You know, the constant hand-to-mouth foods.
I also miss mashed potatos and gravy.
I've never been a big sugar fiend. I can live without chocolate, candy, ice cream, pastries, etc. But I do miss some sugar/carb-laden alcoholic beverages, such as cider, microbrew, and Irish cream whiskey.
As for fruit, that I can have in moderation. I'm lucky that the fruit that I like is mostly that which I can have on Atkins.
The nice thing about low-carb is that there are replacements, to a certain degree. I can have nuts instead of chips. I can have mashed cauliflower with meat drippings instead of mashed potatos and gravy. Plus, there are all kinds of sugar-free chocolate, candy, and ice cream that are available. And I can have other types of alcoholic beverages than the ones that I listed above.
So this is definitely doable. And once I hit maintenance, I can add high-carb food back in, one treat once a week. That I can live with. :)

Sweets are my danger foods, especially dairy based sweets, pudding ,ice cream ,cheese cake etc. I do love baked goods, but not as much as the dairy based. I also love chocolate candy, but again, it comes after my love of the creamy dairy type stuff. I just stay away from any low carb dairy sweet(or any low carb sweet) now. It will trigger the cravings so badly. :)

but the thing is...none of these have to be dangerous in moderation...with the exception of sugar. sugar leads to that blood sugar high and then low, causing cravings. the others (grains, fruit, starch) cause a more reasonable raise in blood sugar, and are useful in maintainence.

Hard to answer this. For me it is a combination of sweets and breads. My war is with pastries, honeybuns, pies!!! Junk like that I can live on! Makes me sick to admit it but it's the plain truth. I've gone countless days eating only this sort of junk with NO normal foods!

I used to say there were 5 things that I would never share.
They were in this order:
1. Chocolate
2. French Fries
3. Pasta
4. My son (the light of my life)
5. My husband (divorced him 3 years ago - so anyone can have him now. LOL) Now I will not share my Fiancee.
But since I have started LC'ing...my list is down to 2. The last 2 on the above list.
I never thought I could get past the cravings, but they weren't that bad once I set my mind to this WOE.

Oh, you can have the sweets, although I have craved sweets more being LC then I ever did in the past. The one thing I miss the most, and it is actually a meal, from one of my favorite restatuants, Chillis. Now that I list it out, I can see, why I needed to go back to LC.
Appetizer:
Mexican Egg Rolls and a BEER
Entree:
Chicken Fried Chicken
Lumpy mashed potatos and thick creamy "White" gravy
Corn on the Cob - cut off and mixed with the potatos
Texas toast loaded with butter.
Anyone got a napkin too wipe the drowl? Anyway, that is not an option any longer, so I'll go warm up my grilled chicken breast and green beans. Some day, I will go have that again, but no where in the near future.

I believe I voted for wheat because I get such horrendous symptoms with it, I become an invalid. But as far as day to day what is most liable to blow my weight loss, it's definitely sugar. All my life, I've been craving sugar constantly, and it's just now slacking off. I'm not the slightest tempted to eat wheat again! --Gail

Geesh, what is it about BREAD??!! That's my downfall food for sure, I can't have a slice and put it away, I keep going back for more, even if it's low-carb. I think it's wheat in general that causes this addictive behaviour, one bite and I'm a junkie, very frightening actually, feeling so out of control... So that's why I stay away from the stuff.

Chocolate.
I live each day in fear that somehow chocolate will get back into my mouth. If it does, I can kiss goodbye to this WOE for as many months as it takes me to break the addiction again. And I can kiss hello to another 15-25 lb in that time.
I'm actually truly terrified of chocolate right now, because it's everywhere, and I do not trust myself to be alone in its presence.
I believe that, in any battle of wills between myself and a bar of chocolate, the chocolate would win.

Sweets-cookies, cakes, desserts
I lost all my weight last july & August and put it back in Nov. and dec. I made a double recipe of fruitcake cookies-loaded with butter and sugar and fruitcake fruit and ate every cookie in the house. It's tougher this time b/c my DH isn't doing this with me like before.

My mantra is " if I eat a bagel I will look like a bagel"!
I have no sweet tooth and I bake pastries and baked goods and sell them, so if I bake I don't nibble.
And here is the problem: anthing made of bread dough and it does not matter what it is. I bake bread for my hubby and that is the only killer for me. I have to leave the room while it is baking or if he is making toast. I have no appitite for anything and have to make myself eat a bite every several hours between water intake to kep the fires burning.

Bread... Cookies... Any kind of cookies, specially those with chocolate, like Chips Ahoy.
Breakfast cereal. I swear I'll never eat that stuff again. I hate eggs, but I prefer them over some "Special K" which is supposed to be healthy, but it's mostly sugar and... well... I could eat the entire box.
Ice cream, also a huge weakness. I crave all kinds of sweets.
Funny how I don't have that problem with rice, pasta, potatoes.. it seems my body craves only processed-full-of-sugar food.

I'm new here, but my danger foods are definitely pastries-#1, white flour in anything will have a delayed effect.. sometimes within an hour and sometimes not until the next day.. but it turns me into a raging jerk- no two ways about it. (Nevermind the fact that white flour is a huge trigger for cravings!)
I figure I owe it to my family and friends to tow the line and eat what is good for me. It's taken many years to realize this, but I am SO very grateful I could make the connection!!!! It wasn't until I read Dr. Agatston's book that I saw the food/mood connection!
Milk chocolate is another trigger, but I can handle high quality (high cocoa butter and NO milk!) dark chocolate without any trouble.

The "hidden" carbs. It's easy to avoid the obvious stuff.
Cream -- 0.6 grams per ounce
Cheddar Cheese -- 0.5 grams per ounce
Swiss Cheese -- 0.9 grams per ounce
Eggs -- 0.6 grams each (large egg)
Sugar-Free Jello (mix) -- 1 gram per 1/2 cup serving (maltodextrin)
Sugar-Free Tang -- 1 gram per cup (maltodextrin)
Coffee -- 0.7 grams per cup
Metamucil -- 2 grams per serving; not counting fiber (maltodextrin)
Artificial Sweeteners -- 1 gram per packet (dextrose or maltodextrin)
See the source here (http://wilstar.com/lowcarb/hiddencarbs.htm).

Cold stone Ice cream---Cake batter with cookie dough and brownie.
You read my mind. Cold Stone is my weakness. 100%. Coffee lovers with the coffee ice cream, almonds, heath bars, and caramel. OH BABY! At least there are almonds, right? Cake batter ice cream is my #2. :)
PMS time is fries dipped in a frosty (guys may not get it but the salt and chocolate sweetness is too much for me to handle!).

Sugar isn't much of a problem. I never had much of a sweet tooth. I don't think I've ever seen a doughnut that was tempting in my entire life.
I don't find chocolate "tempting" as cocoa is a health food full of good flavanols I should probably eat more often. I make "chocolate" with coconut oil, cocoa and DaVinci syrup. Sometimes chocolate muffins (almond meal/falx meal as "flour"), or chocolate protein shakes. I don't like the premade stuff like sugar-free candies and bars and shakes cause they're all way too sweet to me.
The binge foods are all grains for me - whole grain breads, pasta, bagels, garlic bread, french toast, pancakes, etc. I'd say they're almost like drugs. Some people have a bad day and want to have a six-pack; I want to have a pound of pasta. I can knock off most of a loaf of bread as french toast. It's insane.
But the worst food in terms of temptation is any type of fried potatoes - hash browns, french fries, tater tots, etc. Those being around tempt me. People can eat bread around me if I'm not in the mood to binge and I don't care, but fried potatoes always look good.
I'm rarely tempted by corn, but really fresh corn-on-the-cob, or a gopod homemade cornbread is sometimes tempting.
Fruit isn't a problem. I eat a cup of berries or melon or a whole kiwi, as long as it's not breakfast, within my carb allowance. Or a half pomegranate. Or a half apple - which sounds strange, but I "bake" an apple crisp in the microwave and eat half (sliced apple with caramel DaVinci, topped with almond meal and butter). I don't feel "tempted" by fruit really. Maybe a bit by peaches, I allow myself 2 or 3 when they're in season. I'm not going to go through life without ever having a fresh peach. ;) I also do lemon, lime and cranberry juice... diluted with stevia added as drinks most of the summer, and now-and-then in winter too. I don't binge on these things, just have allowable portion sizes. And fruit has to be as a meal, with plenty of fat, not as a snack else my blood gluocse goes nuts.
As for legal foods, I can easily overeat dairy if I don't measure it. I have no problem eating twice as much cheese or yogurt as I need. I make my own ice cream sometimes in very small batches as that would be insanely easy to overeat. For some reason, whipped cream isn't as bad as frozen cream! Dairy is just so calorie-dense that I really *have* to measure it or I over-do.
But the *worst* of the legal foods is nut butters. I don't particularly pigout on whole nuts or nut meals, but for some reason, nut butters are really easy to sit down with a spoon and eat over a thousand calories worth as just a snack.
