I work for a massive corporation--let's say it's kind of brown, if you get my drift--and this week there's been all sorts of celebrations because it's the hundredth anniversary of the company.
What does that mean?
Why, the never-ending parade of crap food, of course!
At this very moment "free snacks" are being handed out on my floor. Here's what's being offered:
Juices
Soda
Candy bars
Granola bars
Chips
Cookies
I just overheard one of the managers say "Oh, there's healthy stuff--diet soda and the 100-calorie cookie packs!"
Most of the department is fairly young, but there's some guts already amongst the twenty-somethings. When you spend your days sitting at a desk in front of a computer, the last thing you need to be doing is sucking down the sugar. But since there isn't any FAT in anything, the company thinks it's promoting "healthy food."
Ow, think I strained an optic nerve with that eyeroll.

We have this problem where I work, too. It drives me crazy because most of the staff is middle-aged or pushing retirement.

Oh c'mon. EVERYone knows granola bars are healthy???
I have this problem at work, too. I work in an adult vocational school that has a lot of intermingling with the public, and because of that, we've been "chosen" by a local University to hold Health Fairs. So they come in 4 times a year and provide free "healthy" lunch and snacks and set up booths on various health topics.
The snacks are about what you described.... but all low fat!
Lunch is something like deli turkey and no-fat cheese on wheat rolls, and maybe a cold pasta salad.
It drives me crazy. I stay in my office.

That's gotta be tough all the time, though! I'd really need some blinders.

I'm not tempted by it thankfully--what I dislike is having to be put in a position where I have to ditch the food that people just stick on my desk or tell them that I can't eat the food, which being in the south as I am is construed as rude no matter how politely the refusal is offered.

I work for a major university in Oklahoma and we get paid once a month and so every 2-3 months, they have "Pay Days on Pay Day" where all employees get a candy bar and soda. About a year ago, I informed them that they need to have something available for people who could not eat sugar. Now they offer a little bag of peanuts in lieu of the candy bar.......baby steps??

At a staff meeting one of my co-workers lamented the lack of "healthy" snacks in the new vending machince and suggested all of the options that are being passed out at your workplace. Sadly, she's diabetic too and I've had conversatins with her over lunches about food, etc. She's convinced that she's doing good by following a lower fat, high carb diet, but of cousre laments that she's not losing weight and not controlling her blood sugar very well. sigh. my low carb plan is of course "unhealthy" and just unworkable.

WHY do people believe a high carb diet is healthy? Low fat, low cal.. as long as its high carb its good! LOL!! Its so funny.. Everyone knows that carbohydrates raise your blood sugar and get stored as fat if it isn't burned first.. But no one seems to want to admit that a low carb diet is good! It bothers me a bit.

The worst was when I was trapped in a hospital and all they had were vending machines and they had the same thing in all the machines. Baked chips, granola bars, cereal bars, pretzels, reduced fat popcorn, gummy bears, licorice, reduced fat crackers (wheat thins and some other type of low fat cheesey cracker), trail mix loaded with dried fruit and chocolate chips and precious few nuts and gum and breath mints.
I ended up eating a granola bar because it seemed to be the lowest carb offering there but man it was awful! I mean what if I were diabetic? I mean my blood sugar would have shot up to like 600 from that junk. And it just seemed like there was this holier than thou air about it all because all the snacks were "healthy" choices.

I work for a large health insurance company and am mortfied at the selections in the vending machines- they put little red hearts on the healthy selections- pretzels, licorice. No nuts, though- too much fat!!!

I used to work at a hospital doing IT and it amazed me what they served up in the staff canteen. talk about not following your own advice - it was all fries, pasta in neon sauces, pies etc. Just what you want your heart surgeon to be eating daily isnt it!

grain producers must have needed to recover after the 'low carb craze' a few years back and they found a way to demonize real food. and people are just sheep... ya, sheep eat grains... so there ya go.

I was very proud of myself when I worked at a bank and I convinced them to switch over to ordering KFC for staff meetings instead of pizza.
I know KFC isn't *that* "low carb"...but I pulled off the battered skin (even though that's the best part...lol)
I always ended up caving in and eating the pizza crust when they ordered pizza....so I was thrilled when they tried to help me out.
"Squeaky wheel gets the oil!" (mmmmmmmm.........oil........*fleh*)

Ha, im a nurse and i work in a hospital....which just so happens to be the most unhealthy place to eat. It's sad really....but unfortunately people are more concerned with free and quick than healthy. And as we all well know...our society has a jaded clue as to what "healthy" really is. I wish i could show you the waistlines of most of the nurses i work with. It's sad.

Funny, we are hosting a heart healthy breakfast next week (work in a large doc office) and they are offering bagels, or energy or protein bars.
At the very least, serve some real oatmeal  I cannot stand how people are fooled into thinking their sugary energy bars are healthy.

People who don't do atkins do not understand. Also, the guy who made the healthy comment isn't totally wrong because we have to remember for all the people who can achieve satisfaction on a low cal diet can succeed. Myself, I love to eat and don't get satisfied which is why atkins works for me and others like me. I used to work in an operating room and the reps used to bring so much garbage. One day one of the girls spoke up in front of them and said "why do they keep bringing this junk, why don't they bring something healthy?" and the next day they brought fruit for us which in my opinion anything fresh is better than processed frankenfood eventhough not atkins approved.

I donated blood not too long ago. They try to force you to drink orange juice, eat sandwiches on white bread with cheese food and chips with cookies for dessert. I just drank some water before I left and almost passed out on my way out the door. I think I'll bring my own snacks next time.

Yeah, My husband accused me of donating strictly for that reason. (It wasn't the entire reason.)
