I usually don't have sugar alcohols as they don't seem very natural and I see no reason to include them in my diet on a regular basis. But this morning I went to the store to get more Red Raspberry Leaf Tea and Chamomile tea (the combo is the BEST thing for menstrual cramps I've found so far!) and I happened to walk past the LC aisle and saw the La Nouba chocolates and I grabbed a dark chocolate bar.
Of course I ate the whole bar with my morning mocha- chocolate is a very important food group during this TOM!!!
Let's just say that they're not lying about the effects of the sugar alcohols on the GI system!

Who needs Alli when we can just get som SF chocolates to do the trick? lol They taste better too, ha!
Seriously though, SA's are dangerous to mess with, not only for their effects on the way out, but also because they can impact blood sugars, induce cravings and kick you right out of lipolysis (ketosis).

That's why I bought a single chocolate bar, and not a box of them! I figure this is for an occasional treat. I doubt that they'll cause any major problems if I only eat one of those chocolate bars per month.
I still should figure out how to make good-tasting chocolate out of unsweetened baking cocoa and stevia. I'd figured on melting it, stirring in sweetener, and letting it harden again, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about doing it.

Considering your reaction to the sugar alcohol in the candy bar, you might prefer to try the Lindt dark chocolate that many women use. The very dark chocolate (80% and higher) does contain some regular sugar, but most people are satisfied with a very small amount of the chocolate. Just a suggestion.

I have terrible reactions to the sugar alcohols in the SF candies, so I 'feel' your pain. As Kisal mentions, I personally enjoy a square or two of 85% Lindt chocolate. I keep the bar in the freezer and slowly savor the treat. Very yummy, and no sugar alcohols.

I went to Heavenly Diet Store and bought a brownie made with maltitol. It had 10 gms fiber and 16 gms of maltitol. It was vry tasty and had great mouthfeel. But I got so gassy and it had a laxative effect as well.
I haven't had this problem with Atkins bars, some of which have 4 gms sugar alcohol per bar. My question is, can you develop a tolerance for sugar alcohols?

Get some non-hydrogenated extra virgin Coconut Oil. It's solid at about 75degrees farenheit or less.
Melt some coconut oil in a bowl, stir in a tbsp or so of cocoa powder, add some stevia / splenda / whathaveyou, a dash of flavored davinci syrup and mix well.. put in the fridge and it hardens! in about 5 minutes you have a sugar-alcohol free chocolate bar! :)
Coconut oil has all kinds of great health benefits, so the coconut oil producers say anyway. No carbs. Cocoa powder has some carbs, splenda has 1 per packet, so it's not a "Free" treat, but it's still great once in awhile.
Some say that Coconut oil ups your metabolism and can make you hyper, I've heard, so maybe not the best bedtime snack, lol. Also, too much coconut oil can have the same effect as the SF candy.
There are various recipes around the forum for "coconut oil bark", experiment! You might find one that you really like :)

I make my own mini candy bar:
1 square unsweetened chocolate
1 TBLS Butter
1 packet Splenda
tiny splash of vanilla
1 TBLS nuts (if so desired)
Melt the chocolate and butter together, add the rest of the ingredients. Pour onto a wax paper covered saucer. Put into the freezer until hardened. Very creamy and cool and really hits the spot!

Thanks! I'll have to give that a try. I already have all the ingredients in the house (minus the davinci syrup but I do have vanilla extract.)

People have said you can develop a tollerance buy eating small ammounts and gradually going up.
Despite that, there is a big difference between 4 grams and 16 grams of sugar alcohols(esp. malitol) and a big difference between they types of sugar alcolols out there (there are maybe 6? or 8? of them). I tollerate them pretty well, but if I ate something with 16 grams of malitol in it, I'd be in the bathroom in no time! 4 grams, maybe a little gassy, but not a problem.

I can't eat sugar alcohols either. I have learned. One piece of candy if I just have to have a treat. It makes me so gassy that I would be embarrassed to be around anyone (just in case), but the Lindt 85% cocoa chocolate! Now that is heaven in a bar. I don't buy them except at holidays for a treat. It makes it easy when everyone else is eating the cookies, and candies to give myself a couple of squares for a treat.

This is what i do and I use stevia, not splenda. And it's really to die for with some peanut butter on top... :yum: eating some right now.
