First of all, let me thank you all for taking the time to post and for all the great advice. If I sounded whiny, I probably was. I think my health is at stake at this point and if I don't stop eating the way I do- For Good, I'm gonna start having health problems. I think I do already anyway and its a small price to pay to give up bread and other harmful things to be healthy and just plain feel good! So I'm gonna "buck up!" My sister and I email often and have talked about how you can't always read the emotion or tone of the other in their message. I've read other posts by Miller and feel there's nothing negative meant by the post. If it was tough love, I accept it, gladly. Again, thank you all for your help and answers. This is a great forum because there's lots of lively conversation and there's nothing wrong with that! Barb

:) Sorry that thread got out of hand. Lack of emotion and tone on forums really screw things up sometimes. I replied just now, clarifying what I meant and how I personally feel about bread as a diet staple, if you care to read.

Hey, sweetie, you did NOT cause a problem! Your post asked a question that a LOT of us wondered when we started low-carbing. Giving up bread isn't easy -- it's the staple of the standard American diet, after all! Learning a new way of eating takes a lot of work.

As for the other stuff, message boards are just like this -- since we can't hear each other's tones, it's inevitable that we have to occasionally end up debating about them.

I sincerely hope you don't let this experience intimidate you from asking the questions you need to ask. I have asked some seriously dumb questions in my time on this forum (questions that, unlike yours, really weren't worth answering!), and in the VAST majority of my experience, I have received nothing but helpful, gracious replies and lots of support. This board really can be an invaluable support for your weight loss!

Yeah, there is NO problem at all. No one meant to take your thread out of control, or to lose focus of your question. I can personally say I'm sorry for my role in that. It's just I tend to see a lot of negative or cocky responses from certain members to people asking for help, and I'm tired of it. So I was defending you.

Please dont be afraid to post, and I promise that not all questions here turn into debates. :D

That was a great post- so passionate, so many opinions! It was so much better than any political debate- I really wanted some popcorn while reading those posts- don't apologize, think of how all that hot debating caused so many calories (or carbs- sorry) to burn! -Denise

I haven't been back to that thread, so I don't know what's going on. And from reading this post, I don't think I want to!

Anyway, make a commitment to get yourself healthy. And stick around here, b/c this is a great place for support. :)

I often wonder how many newbies, over the years, have packed up and left because their threads turned into off-topic debates about how everyone else responded. :daze: I'm glad you're still here. I wish you luck and good health on your LC journey, and hope you find what you're looking for from the forum.

Don't apologize, I'll say the same as everyone else here, this is how we learn, asking questions and getting answers, opinions & other's experiences. You were just a catalyst for a discussion long time coming, not the cause!

I'm glad to hear you are going to "buck up" and just do it. I know you don't believe us, but it really isn't as bad as it seems, most of us have found we quickly found we didn't miss bread as much as we thought we would.

Sometimes I think those of us who have discovered that low-carb is a great way to live forget how scary & hard it is to make that huge change in how we eat at the beginning. And around here we tend to go on and on about how it's a way of life, and you can't go back to eating your old way later or you'll regain. It's true of course, but it's also overwhelming to have to think of the enormity of that when you are just starting. Never having bread again? Ack! ;)

Just concentrate on today and tomorrow. You don't have to give up bread forever today. Today, you just have to give up bread for 24 hours.

I'll just add that you can give up the bread. My problem food was chocolate. I was such a chocoholic, my co-workers bought me this huge jar of mini chocolate bars when I left to move away. It was at least a gallon and a half. They didn't last long.

Now, even though I can have LC chocolate treats any time I want, I just don't want it. My cocoa powder is a year old and should probably be tossed.

There are different perspectives; it helps some people to replace the bread, and it's more helpful to others to abstain 100%. You have to figure out which camp you belong to. Experiment, make mistakes, and be honest with yourself.

A powerful thought I have is to think of those foods like a lot of other things in my life that I "swore" I could "never give up" or "never stop loving:" my favorite band when I was 16, certain styles of clothes, a lousy ex. Ha ha! That's what I think of my former chocoholism. It's just something I grew out of. Believe in that power that moves you along to a new phase. If you want indifference toward bread, you can achieve it.

Hey, I still like my favorite band from when I was 16!

In all seriousness, on any forum you go on there's always going to be people that are easily offended or misread stuff. I think some people come here looking for "there there, now now, it's okay to eat (insert favorite treat here), this diet stuff is so HARD!" and sometimes they get confused by people who have been here a while with people who are genuinely looking for help. If I see the same person posting "can I eat this? Can I eat that?" repeatedly I tend to have less patience with them. A lot of times I just don't say anything, but there's a lot of people here who fancy themselves "experts" (another forum habit) and can't wait to lay the smack down on the noobs. Hang around here long enough and you'll see who's who.

Well, that was a flawed analogy, because I still like my favorite band from high school, too: Depeche Mode. Ha ha! I was just bouncing to one of their songs on my rebounder yesterday. Now, however, I don't feel the need to plaster their pictures all over my bedroom or write "I :rheart: Martin Gore" on my pencil case. :D

My mp3 has only music on it from childhood, early teen, late teenage and college years (disco, INXS, Police, some Christian bands from the 90's, basically 70's & 80's stuff). I stopped listening to new music after about 1990.

Oh gee... now I wonder what's wrong with me. I hate music from my 20s, but I do like some from the 70s... some.

I love my teen daughter's music! Evanescence, The Used, My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars...

what is up with that?
