Imprisonment often improves metabolic control in prisoners
with type 2 diabetes; however, the reasons for this remain
unclear. Here, we investigated the metabolic control of male
prisoners with type 2 diabetes in Japan. Retrospective
analysis of 4385 medical charts of male prisoners in Fukushima
Prison from 1998 to 2004 revealed 109 prisoners (all Asian)
with type 2 diabetes (mean+/-S.D.: 51+/-10 years). All were
followed up during their imprisonment (14+/-10 months). During
imprisonment, mean fasting plasma glucose and hemoglobin Alc
(HbA1c) levels dramatically decreased from 184+/-74 to
113+/-38mg/dl (p<0.001) and 8.4+/-2.1 to 5.9+/-1.2% (p<0.001),
respectively. In addition, 5 of 18 prisoners (28%) treated
with insulin and 17 of 34 (50%) treated with oral hypoglycemic
agents were able to discontinue their treatment and maintain
good metabolic control. Most prisoners in Japanese prisons
work 8h a day 5 days a week, consuming a high dietary fiber
diet including boiled rice with barley, "Mugimeshi". These
findings suggest that a well-regulated lifestyle and long-term
intake of high dietary fiber may have beneficial effects on
metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

They are also each given the same amount of food to eat, which
is likely less than the amount that many had been eating but
still likely more that 2 lbs per day.

No indication of weight loss which most likely happened, good
indication of increased exercise, higher fiber intake known to
increase incretin levels. But at best the numbers achieved are
not within the "normal" range for glucose control and no
"cure" insight. This kind of reverse in numbers is often seen
when strict lifestyle controls are first put into place. Note
also not all butminority went off medication.
The two pound diet, aka 2pd etc., remains trash science.
Good try, no cigar.
God bless.

in india with the world's highest rate of diabetes.

It appears that prisoners in Japan are overfed.

The 2PD-OMER Approach is not a diet.
Those who have become convinced in the heart that hunger is
wonderful have no difficulty with eating less, down to the
optimal amount, for the rest of their life:

It would be your opinion and not those of folks presently
living in Okinawa who are all becoming centurians because they
have the wisdom to stop eating before they are full (stomach
stretched thereby killing the hunger). The latter is
overeating more than 2 lbs per day.

I think your Themodynamic Theory of Thermogenesis according to
.. fixed .. beliefs .. comes in well here.
The increased consumption of barley and / or rice includes
the increased consumption of grain rice based lipids
including .. lecithin.
Lecithin is shown to produce brown fat and therefore
increase thermogenesis .. and lecithin is also shown to
decrease .. hunger.
Sooo .. contrary to your theory of .. "having to eat small
amounts of food" and "go hungry" .. I believe one can eat a
fairly high proportion of fruits and vegetables and grains
which are .. whole .. as opposed to refined.
That would give one the satiating .. lecithin and increase ..
brown fat production ..
Brown fat production takes a little .. time ..

Lecithin will cause no fat if total calories eaten do not
exceed energy needs. The prisinors did not get fruits and few
if any vegitables. They re fed mostly grain as part of the
punisment. Their's is a low calorie diet also as part of
punisment.
All your speculation, as usual, has little if any basis in

Sounds like a lower glycemic diet with less candies, sugars,
sodas and refined carbs? File this in the "no shit,
