Abstract

Purpose:To identify the effects of phosphatidylcholine on
xanthlasma occurring on the eyelid.

Methods:From February 2004 to September 2005, we had injected
phosphatidylcholine in xanthelasma on the both upper eyelids
of eight patients ( 3 males, aged 51-67 and 5 females, aged
45-63) who had asymmetrical and large xanthelasma, which is
usually found hard to be removed by surgery or other
treatments. It was injected weekly at the lesion using 1cc
syringe with 30 gauge needle for 8 to 10 times.

Results:None of the eight patients had side-effects from
injection and also, there was no complication, such as
asymmetry or scar on the eyelids, that the surgery might
cause. Also, xanthelasma has not reoccurred for more than one
year as observed.

Conclusions:Phosphatidylcholine removed xanthelasma without
side- effects and it is recommended that it can be used as an
effective alternative to surgery or the other specific
treatment.
