Way to go and congratulations on your 12lbs!!! Keep up the good work! :D

I am a fellow Marylander, whose "one-year low-carb" anniversary is just around the corner. I've lost 110lbs, and would love to share any stories or offer support with another Marylander!

Thanks!

 I'm in DC. Does that count? This is my second day of low carbing. Unfortunately, I decided to low carb after registering for a wine-tasting event at the Spanish embassy. I'll try to limit myself to one glass of wine and protein hors d'oeuvres. Wish me luck.

Maybe this thread has life after all?!! As you can see, I wrote once, but there wasn't much happening here. I didn't do too well at the wine-tasting. As a matter of fact, I hadn't eaten much that day and got pretty lit. At least it was fun, and I have managed to continue losing weight since then.

Goodness, Maryland/DC/VA area is brimming with the non-bread crowd. Goodie!

I'm in College Park and def need regular tips, tricks and traps advice. [Yes, I need to make more time to read the info already posted]

I'm part of a WtWtch group at work just for the weigh-in (otherwise I don't do it at all) but am having difficulty giving up caffeine and alcohol. Seems even the thought of either one is enough to make me "pay" for high protein meals in calories and kick me "out of purple" for several days. Not fair, I tell you.

Hi All,

I'm also from Montgomery Co.... Started Atkins last June at 244 and today am at 213.... It is the easiest diet to follow.... Just learn the rules and you can play the game..... [My first girl friend taught me that].....

I read the first Atkins when it came out but didn't think I needed to change myway of living.... Over these years I've taken notice of all that has been written about the program and have had many many overweight friends who have tried all sorts of diets and programs..... After I learned that the fat we eat is not hte fat we wear the Atkins diet became the most sensible.... Then this past June I wound up in the hospital with bleeding ulcers and they weighed me at 244 pounds..... That was the highest ever for me.... I've been on Atkins since....

Once I had been off of sugar for a week---- and I mean totally off sugar---- my appetite had dropped considerably so I'm not eating nearly the quantity of food as previously..... I'm a technical person... so sugar can be simply defined and I can find it where ever it exists.... in Cokes, in catsup, in breads, in prepared foods, etc. etc. My success I'm believing is being able to avoid sugars and enjoying salads, vegetables, cheese and eggs.

Hi...I'm in Maryland as well...Columbia is about halfway between Baltimore and DC (but if you're in MD, you already know that!)

I lost about 60 pounds on WW and now am enjoying LC WOE, but weight is not pouring off, so we'll see what happens.

Nice to know there are other MD people surfing the site!

Congrats on quitting smoking. In my opinion, it's by far the most important thing a person can do. Gaining weight isn't fun, but breaking nicotine's tremendous hold is something to be proud of. Good luck doing Atkins.

Have any of the Maryland/DC/VA lo-carbers checked out any local groups for support other than WW?

I really don't have the time to organize anything, but with my WW~W coming to an end soon, I'd sure like to find another weekly, or every other week place to meet for continued, (well, what can I call it?) Rah Rah sessions.

Maybe the TOPS groups? I haven't gone to one of those in, hmmmmm 20 years? <--- I was a fat infant, you understand.

Anyone else have an idea? I would also love NOT to pay the price of a continued WW session. I'd rather spend the bucks on steak.

I just fear I'll stall out again unless I keep myself on the scale and listening to the advantages of succeeding on the LC WOE. Like fitting into the doggone airplane seats, zipping into my sleeping bag all the way, lower BP, avoiding the look of TERROR on the face of the folks on the Metro next to whom I might have to sit if I can't have an empty seat to myself, etc.

Hello Marylanders!

Glad to meet the new ones on the MD forum. I think Lisa's idea about getting together for a weigh in and a steak at Outback (no we won't weigh ourselves at Outback :D ) would be nice. There's an Outback off of Rt 29 Just outside Columbia that may be a good place to go. Any takers?

joanie

I live right in Columbia, so that would work great for me. School nights are kind of tough, but I could do a weekend night -- maybe Terrie and I could come together!

Just Lisa
Fri, Apr-26-02, 20:20
...or maybe it's considered Columbia? It's near Barnes & Noble, and some other stores (Safeway, Carrabas, Target). It's the busiest Outback in the world, if that helps tell you where it's at... and they open at 2 on the weekend and I have every Saturday free, the hubby does some gaming stuff. I like to be there when they open because I don't have the patience to wait and I don't like to eat the Outback Special late in the evening. I also like that there is NO SMOKING allowed in any restaurant in Howard County. I'm so allergic to smoke, and basically anything that grows! Right now I'm beyond miserable with sneezing, etc.

So let's do it, get together and have a gab fest, shall we? Next Saturday? :hyper: My email is LPOWELL11~aol.com.

I'm free that day. What time should we meet? Joanie and Terrie and anyone else interested, What is good for you?

Lisa, I love that shopping center. I love the B&N and Target (pronounced tar-jay with a french accent!) :D I've been to that Outback on several occasions, and you're right, it is a very popular and crowded place to eat in the area.

I live in Randallstown and I come down to Columbia all the time because my parents live there. I actually went to high school in Columbia. I graduated from Oakland Mills many moons ago.

Anyway, I really look forward to meeting you all and being able talk freely about this WOL without having to type! My e-mail is auntteetee~earthlink.net if you want to contact me.

Hope to see you soon!

2:00 or 3:00, they get crowded early. I graduated from Francis Scott Key (Union Bridge) many moons ago. I grew up in Carroll County and prior to moving back, spent about 13 years in Myrtle Beach, SC. My home office is in SC (Columbia)

I think I miss the shopping centers/malls down there the most. I have yet to find a nice mall up here that's fairly close and I like. I think I miss Belk. Heck, we drove an hour + to go to Super Wal-Mart in York last Sunday because it used to be a family tradition in South Carolina:)

Okay, pick a time and I'll be there. (I have to drive to SC on Sunday, another reason to meet early, so I can pretend that I won't wait until the last minute to pack.

I think it'll be much fun!

Sat, Apr-27-02, 08:50
I've been to those super Wal Marts in VA and NC. I wonder why there aren't any here in MD. I was actually in one a couple of weekends ago in VA. I was amazed at the prices in their grocery store.

I can be at the Outback at 2pm on Sat May 4. I say let's set that and if anyone else can show up, that's great--the more the merrier!

See you then!

Sat, Apr-27-02, 12:45
Hi guys,

Meeting at 2:00 on May 4 sounds fine for me. That shopping center is very convenient for me (I'm over there a lot) and Outback sounds great...except that it will be hard to pass up the blooming onion!

In regards to the note that Theresa wrote about Oakland Mills HS...that's where my son will eventually go, if we don't move to another part of Columbia. That's IF he graduates second grade, which is sometimes in question! We live in the Jeffers Hill part of Long Reach...were you in that area?!

I'm gonna send an email to Terrie, since I don't know if she knows about this plan or not; she hasn't posted here recently. Unless you hear otherwise from me, plan on me for next week.

Looking forward to meeting you all -- we need to take a pic of all of us and post it on this site!!

Actually, I lived in Running Brook in the village of Wilde Lake, but when I was in 11th grade, OMHS first opened, so they offered to bus people from the west side to OM since WLHS was so crowded. I, and two of my sibs who were in HS, switched. We all hated WLHS at the time.

My first apartment was in OM at Autumn Crest. Of course, that was a VERY long time ago!

Glad you'll be able to make the luncheon! Can't wait to meet everyone!

I got hungry for the Outback Special so we went yesterday. That's all good, I'll be more than ready next Saturday. I don't know if it's because it was Sunday but there was sure a lot of blue-hairs there and if the one behind me had pushed/ran into me one more time I was going to have to beat her over the head with my purse. Is it my imagination or are old people getting meaner/nastier? I can see the point where you've made it this far, who cares what the world thinks, but heebie jeebie, it was BAD yesterday.

Did the MD people meet for dinner last May? How did it go? I know of several new Low-carbers now in DC - all could stand to have some support in addition to the info from the internet and books.

I'm finally about ready to give up coffee (which, I'm pretty sure was the reason I didn't lose another pound after my initial whoosh when I did without) again and see if I can't do better in the next two months.

The folks at my work are still offering WW~W sessions. It's just not compatible with the LC WOE, so I'm not signing up this year.

But I'd make an effort to visit a local group. Those airplane seats are just getting too small for my hindquarters. Something's gotta give! (grumble grumble....)

Does the Eastern Shore count? Get this - I'm in the store and scanning food labels and here the word "Carbs".... I bounce into the conversation - starved for other carb counting chubs....

At a dinner/meeting/barbeque I was asking the server if I could have three pieces of chicken and was there sugar in the salad dressing? Everyone else in line was wondering why this obese granny was all of a sudden getting picky about her food.

I can't believe that a stick that is just about the last color purple would turn me on.

Do mosquitoes have carbs?

Hi Jannie , hi Journal...

Thanks for your encouraging words. That would be great...having a fellow lc-er to encouarge and uplift one another. I peruse your success link and am totally pumped for you...and me!

I think I was a bit obsessive about the scale...checking my weight WAY too often....but you know how God has a way of dealing with us when we take our eyes off of Him....the scale it going whacko. I started at 293. I wasweighing 270 last weekend. This week I have weighed in at 305, 312, 324, 298, 270, 260.5. The scale is jumpin' all over the place. Finally my oh-so-smart son says, "Mom, I think it's broken." Yeah, well, at a minimum. Broken or demon-possessed! I will forego the scale until I get back to the doctors a month or so from now. I keep telling y kids not to worry about the "number' on the scale but rather rely on how they feel and how their clothes fit. Time to dance to the tune I'm playing, huh?

Gotta run....

God bless,

Julie

Greetings red. Welcome aboard. I haven't been doing the LC wol nearly as long as many of these great encouragers but I do know that if you simply commit to yourself to stay away form the carbs for three or four days (and you're anything like me), the cravings will subside INCREDIBLY! I have found it gets much easier, especially if you get into the cooking. I also belong to a couple htt groups (hold-the-toast) and get some great encouragemnet and recipes from them. I love cooking out of the Dana Carpender books and find a lot of things become family favorites really quickly.

On a more personal note. I also lost my dad through illness, watching him fade away. If you would like to talk, feel free to email me privately. We were told my dad had about three months to live when he was diagnosed with throat cancer. He lived 11 months. He was ready to go the last few months. Very tired. That was 13 years ago. Six months ago, I lost my mom. It's still very difficult to accept. Again, if you'd just like to talk...rotterx3~aol.com.

Hi All!
I agree with you, Ted, that there must not be too many MD LC-ers on this thread. I'm in Southern Maryland -- St. Mary's County. I've been on a low-carb diet (35% carbs / 45% protein / 20% fat) since Feb. 6th and started the Atkins diet only 4 days ago. During my month on the former diet, I lost 5 pounds, and on the Atkins diet, I've lost 2 pounds so far. It comes and goes, so perhaps it's just water weight (sigh).
Anywho . . . count me in on this thread.

Hi Red and SenseShine,
Well it appears that there are three of us anyhow. I have been working to personalize the South Beach plan to make it my own for about a month and am getting more comfortable with it as time goes by.
I'm sorry to hear about your parents Red and the extra stress that you are feeling. Stress and loneliness have always been two of the triggers that have sent me to my comfort zone with food. It's pretty sad that I would go to food for comfort but I guess it has always been there so it's easy to do. I just have to break that habit and move on to dealing with my feelings.
About a week after I started LCing I decided to quit smoking after 30+ yrs of that bad habit. Talk about timing; I'm not certain what motivated me to do it just now but now I've been about a month without smoking!
Anyhow, I'm glad to see both of you and will be watching for you to start your Journal so I will know where to find you.
Take care and remember to take time for yourselves,
Ted

Hi you all! I'm in MD, too, and have been a poster on this forum off and on for years. Ted, congrats on quitting smoking -- such a great accomplishment!

I'm living in Columbia, and a full time pharmacy student up in Baltimore. Have two kids, hubby, etc. Life is very full; sometimes TOO full!

Hope you all are doing well with your programs...! (you can see more about me in my journal)

Take care!

Hi Neighbors!

I am from Towson, MD near Baltimore. I've been on this forum before, about three years ago. I started Atkins again on Wednesday. Pehaps I'll see you around the forum!

I am a low carbing Marylander......I grew up in Ferndale and married a guy from Baltimore Highlands. After living in Germany for several years, we bought a house in his old neighborhood and we spend a lot of time rehabbing it! Neat thread...good to know there are other Marylanders out there!

Hi Everyone,

I'm from Annapolis, MD home to the United States Naval Academy. My doctor wants me to eat meats and vegetables. So I'm assuming it's a low carb diet.
