New Thread which will always stay on top.

London locations, but check websites for location near you:
SELFRIDGES FOOD HALL, 400 Oxford St. W1A 1AB; 7629-1234(www.selfridges.com); Bond St. or Marble Arch Tube
Wonder at the variety: the food AND the prices. Can be pricey, but has a fantastic deli, kosher food, 38 varieties of olives, ready meals, fresh fish, a butcher's, salt-beef bar, and sushi bar. The wine shop is also good if so inclined. Who says LC is austere?
SAFEWAY, 159-69 Edgeware Rd. W2; 7723-1946 (www.safeway.co.uk); Paddington Tube/Rail
Reasonably priced eggs and veg (get those leafy greens in!) This location has a small halal/kosher counter [halal sliced beef, 1.72/340g]. Some nice cheeses. Buy your basics here for less.
SAINSBURY'S, 158A Cromwell Rd. SW7; 7373-8313 (www.sainsburys.co.uk); Earl's Ct. or Glouster Rd. Tube
Fresh meats, fish, eggs, veg, nuts. Economy-sized parcels of meat that you can divide for freezing. Some locations have rotisserie chicken, my favourite! Mid-range prices.
WAITROSE, 199 Finchley Rd. NW3; 7624-0453 (www.waitrose.com); Finchley Rd. Tube
Fresh meats, fish, eggs, nuts, veg. Good for organics, free-range meats and eggs. Deli has hot food [roast chicken 3.79 each] and cold [seafood salad 1.79/100g]. Highly recommended cheese counter. Mid to expensive prices.
Neal's Yard Dairy, 17 Shorts Gardens, WC2; 7240-5700
Covent Garden Tube
These cheeses are ALIVE with flavour! Ultimate selection! And they want you to sample everything!
Ginger Pig, Borough Market, SE1; 07801-847245
London Bridge Tube/Rail
Naturally reared pork, beef, free-range organic chicken, lamb. Some of the best quality meat anywhere.
Spitalfields Market, Commercial St. btwn Lamb St. and Brushfield St., E1; Liverpool St. Tube/Rail
Looking for organic produce, and lots of it? Look no further than Spitalfields from 10am until 5pm, Sundays! They've got it all, including farm fresh eggs, cheeses, and some meats.
Fresh & Wild, 49 Parkway, NW1; 7428 7575 (www.freshandwild.com) Camden Town Tube
Ever drool over a red pepper or a bunch of spinach? You will after visiting this store-- fantastic array of organic veg, nuts, and soy products. Tea selection is good and suppliments numerous with lots of info available to help with selection. Also locations in Soho and Clapham Junction, among others.

Brilliant idea!
My favourites:
1) Safeway (mainly because it's my local)
Safeway Matured Cheddar and Onion Sausages
price - £1.99
carbs - 1.1 per sausage
very tasty
Rotisserie plain whole roasted chicken (£2.99), garlic whole roasted chicken (£3.49)
Mixed (green & black) pitted olives with herbs from Deli section for £0.98 per 100g - goes well for snack - really tasty!
Cornish clotted cream
around £1.50
low-carb, but watch out for calories, great with strawberries
Sugar-free jelly (so-called Jell-O) by Safeway and other brands up to £0.74 per 2-sachets (3 servings each if you are that good)
SoBe Lean Metabolic Enchancer drink, £1.54. Very tasty, contains chromium as well as sweeteners.
Ready to eat shelled Mussels 200g pack - great in salads. but contain about 2g carb per 100 g.
2) Marks & Spencer
Sandwich fillers: Prawn and Mayonnaise (0.7g carb per 100g) - very delicious, Egg & Bacon (1.5 g carb), Poached Salmon & Cucumber (2.6g carb)
Pastrami - very tasty, 0carbs £2.99 :(
Fresh Brazil Nuts and other nuts
Cream Cheese with garlic and herb - gets me into nirvana - really really nice, low carb, prefer not to think about the price mainly because of the amounts consumed) Great with Celery sticks.
Crispy Bacon (Smoked or Unsmoked) - 0 carbs, very crunchy, nice with the same old Cream Cheese (as above)
Great and not so cheap veggies - as everybody knows.
3) Especially for those nuts lovers I found GREAT place for nuts in London, called Nuts about Nuts, 1 min walk from Edgware Rd tube station on the Bell Street, NW1. They have great selection of nuts in different flavour, but beware! just don't look to your right - mouth-watering display of different Turkish delights (Turkish shop after all).
4) and last but not the least Waitrose, definitely the winner for me on the LC varieties. But far from being my local. They have again nuts, great sugar-free Italian soft cheeses, and mayonnaise with 0carbs! meat, great deli section etc But not so cheap.
Oh... I forgot Heinz Weight-watchers Warbutons Brown sliced bread at Tesco at only 4.5g carb per a very thin slice.

Never buy anything at full price – give it a couple of days and the same item will be HALF-PRICE. 2-3 days nearer sell-by date makes no difference to me. ;) They always have one or two items on special offer.
Fresh meats/chicken very often at half price. Frozen meats, fish, chicken. Tinned fish of all kinds. Love the Red and Pink Salmon.
Princess Wild PINK SALMON – tins of 418g 0carb – 85p (special offer for the larger tin is cheaper than the price for the small 213g tin normally sold at £1.09p) Gives me three good meals. Check out my recipe (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?threadid=34578&highlight=burger+OR+fish) for “fish burgers”.

Hi
If anyone is looking to buy Myoplex bars or sugar free sweets (to remove the taste of Ketosis in your mouth) then there is a health food store in Hampstead worth visiting.
The woman who runs the health food store is quite keen to order in for you the things that you like.
I cant remember what the health food store is called but it is opposite Hampstead Tube Station.
Also - the fourth floor Selfridges has the best Pharmacia in London that I have seen so far and the staff are knowledgeable and brilliant. If you dont want to speak to the staff, they have puters dotted around the department to help you identify what you are looking for and what you might need nutrition wise and food-wise.

There's a UK site for LC stuff by mail, you can find it here:
http://www.carblife.com/
They have good value macadamia nuts. And if you have those sweet cravings they have LC chocolates, but better to keep away if you can't stop at one. They help me to go through my days with TOMy with reasonably minimum damage :p They also used to have Keto line bread/pudding/muffin mixes and other stuff.
£5 delivery charge.

also the myoplex bars are cheaper on the carblife website than in Hampstead----of course you have p&p to pay but it's worth it if you are ordering lots------i love the lemon cheese cake flavour with a long black decaf coffee as it's so rich and yummy---only 3g carb and a big bar---70g.

if you are a soup lover like me try ASDA Brocolli & stilton Soup £1.08 for 500g - just 9g of carb in the whole tub - very nice! Its in the chiller cabinet withe thGarlic bread (boo!)
400g Avonmore ham £1.58 at just 1.6g carbs per 100g.
they also do some foil tray ready meals a bit pricey at 2.99 each or 2 for £5.00. My favs are (2) chicken breats stuffed with spinach & ricotta at 3.5g carbs per pack. Also do Salmon in LYonaise sauce at about 5g per pack of 2 salmon fillets.
Also love Asda own brand Organic Korma cooking Sauce at 6g carbs per 100g (quarter jar. makes a nice chicken & cauliflower korma.
A bit high in carbs if you make a whole meal, but a good dollop your plate for dipping is good: Asda Mild Chilli Sauce 94p 13g per 100g portion.
Chicken Tonight do 2 gorgeous sauces - Creamy peppercorn, 5.3g carb per 100g. A jar will last me a few nights. Also do a classic chassueur at just 3.9g per 100g portion.
Also live Pepperami spicy or plain, make a boring omlette taste different.

Thanks everyone. Lots of helpful information.
Here's an entry I found elsewhere which I thought was good to copy in here.
If you miss crisps, try flavoured nori (seaweed pressed into sheets)!
It is salty, thin, and crispy and comes in pre-cut foil packs.
The type I buy had this nutritional info:
Ingredients: seaweed, salt, rapeseed oil, sesame oil.
Serving size 0.07oz./2.1g
Calories 10
Total fat 0.5g
Saturated fat 0.3g
Cholesterol 0.0g
Sodium 74.3mg
Total carbs 0.8g
Fiber 0.04g
Sugars 0.03g
Protien 0.53g
It also has vit. A, C, calcium, and iron (small amounts)
This is Korean nori, BTW, which traditionally has sesame oil. Japanese nori also comes flavoured, just watch out for sugar (like in the teriyaki kind.) Check labels!
For anyone in the southern UK, I found it easily in New Malden (my favourite store is Intel) which has a large Korean community.

Tesco
Tesco *Finest* range - Chicken with mushrooms and wine sauce (I'm not so sure about that last part). Only 0.8g carb per 100g and has two servings. Best of all it tastes absolutely delicious.
Heinz portein powder (Calestan I think?) has zero carbs and is really nice whizzed with soya milk (Provamel Red Pack - 0.6g per 100ml) for a thick milkshake.

Tesco
Gia tubes of; sun dried tomato puree 0.5 g per 100g, chilli puree 2g per 100g, also do red and green pesto which are low carb.
I make tomato soup using 1/2 tin plum tomatoes, tbsp of sun dried tomato puree, cream to taste and black pepper. Whizz it up in the blender and heat. It is nicer than Heinz!
Anchor extra thick real dairy cream (squirty can - gold) Pure cream and no additives. Because it is aerated you tend to use less.
President spreadable butter (just like the butter you get on holiday in France) is delicious.
Edam 1/2 fat cheese (it has no rubbish added to it but is a lot less calories than full fat so you can eat more of it!)

Not strictly low carb, but much lower carb than standard Ice cream - excellent for a treat at 10 grams of carb per hundred grams:
Minghella Dolce Vita real vanilla Ice Cream for Slimmers and Diabetics.
100 grams provides:
Energy 109kcal
Protein 3g
Carbohydrate 10.6
of which fructose 6.2g
Fat 5g
Polydextrose 7g
Sodium nil
Calcium 107mgs
It tastes really good and is less 'sweet' than normal Ice Cream - which I personally like. 100 grams of this is a decent amount.
I found it in Tesco

Caro, talking about ice-cream ... I found Iceland's 24 Mini Eclairs (99p I think). Warning only buy when you have developed some discipline. It is 2.6g carbs/eclair and gives you the tiniest bite of choclate, fresh cream and a whiff of pastry.
I bought a packet months ago (for a visitor's desert - that's my excuse anyway! ;) ) and one eclair is enough to satisfy the chocolate cravings.
Take care.

Hi
Here is something I found in Sainsburys which tastes great:
Spicy Fried Chicken (ready to eat)
Carbs per half pack 4.4g (half pack = 150 grams)
of which sugars less than 0.1
starch 4.4
Fat 24.9
saturates 3.5
monounsaturates 14.0
polyunsaturates 7.4
415 calories
This chicken was in the chilled section next to all the curries and chinese food and it tastes great.
Enjoy!

My local KwikSave recently started selling pork scrachings 99p/packet. There is no nutritional information on the packet. They are on the cooked meats and deli counter.
Love the peculiar texture though. Crunchy and hard on the outside, soft and mushy on the inside! Taste awful as they are but drowned with plenty of spices quite edible.
They helped me cut down on nuts and got me out of a long stall.

Sainsburys do a tin of Cocoa Powder (with NO added sugar). 70p a tin and only 10.5g carbs in the whole tin.
I had a few strawberries, cream and a teaspoon of Cocoa. I intended to add some sweetener in but after tasting it, I didn't need to - strawberries were really ripe and sweet enough.
Boy ! did I enjoy that treat! :D

These are not the usual pork scratchings, but are puffed up - the way corn is puffed up to become popcorn. They're good if you miss crisps and crunchy food - they look like an oversized Quaver and taste pretty strong - good for using with spreads/dips.
I found them in Morrison's supermarket in Ipswich, 65p for a 35gm bag - which is quite big as they're pretty light. Per 100gms the carb count is 0.1gm - so a whole packet = one third of a tenth of a gram! What a carb bargain!

M&S does yummy Scottish smoked salmon pate (£1.29) with only 0.2g of carbs in 100g. I found it a real bargain as most of them at different supermarkets come around 4g. It's high in protein too (17g), which is handy for those on Protein Power plan.

Has anyone tried the Nutribread loaf? It says its for women and has linseed in it, but really tastes nice and much better than Burgen. Also only 4g of carbs per slice. I got it from Sainsburys a couple of times but only the big branches seem to stock it.

Hi there,
My fav is Lidl, it's soooo cheap on everyday stuff.
LIDL
In the fishy freezers I found a Fish & Broccoli bake (400g)
which is only 3g carb per 100g, half the box is sufficient on a nice bed of salad or green veggies.
SAINSBURYS
Yesterday I came home with one of those takeaway curry carrier bag packs for two. The Eastern Indian mix which had in it:
Chicken Jalfrezi - 6.8g carb per 1/2 serving
Bengali Mustard Chicken - 8.6g carb per 1/2 serving
Aubergine Masala - 9.5g carb per 1/2 serving
2 x flavoured rice (can't remember exactly what buy exotic) - didn't eat the rice so won't mention it
All for under £11 for two  . I had just under the 1/2 serving as it was toooo much :D . Hubby had one of the rice boxes and finished the other one with the left overs the next day, that's how much there was!
OK I know it's fairly high in carbs, but if your carbs were low for the rest of the day, which mine were, without even trying, it was a nice weekend treat! :p and still at 31g of carb for the day!
Enjoy yourselves, there's loads out there to make our lives a little easier on those 'can't be bothered to cook' nights!

Hello
I just looked at
http://www.carblife.com./
and saw that they sell Splenda. You receive it by post within 5 business days of them receiving your order, which can be placed by phone, fax or email. £5 delivery costs - doesn't matter how heavy your parcel.
Is Splenda available in any supermarket in South England?

Fresh & Wild health food store in London, Old Str (it's a chain store, so there are few more in London, not sure if any outside) has Zwicky Soay Bean Flakes 375g, £1.85.
per 33g serving
Protein: 13.2g
Carbs: 6g
Fat: 7g
of which saturates only: 1.3g
Fibre: 6.5g
I's organic and doesn' have any additive. It's made of 95% full fat soya bean flakes and 5% pure barley malt.
I found some info on this on the internet
http://www.zwicky.ch/indexe.htm
Had it with diluted whipping cream - very delicious and filling.
enjoy!

Hi all,
I've just had two really yummy curries again from Sainsbury's even lower in carbs than before!
Eastern Indian range:
Prawn Malai Curry
1/2 pack
350 cal
15.4g protein
2.8g carb!!
30.8g fat
2.2g fibre
It was really creamy and yummy! :yum:
Southern Indian range:
Chicken Madras
1/2 pack
318 cal
26.6g protein
3.6g carb
21.8g fat
2.6g fibre
Hubby and me share two packs normally, with me having slightly less than a 1/2 pack as the serving is large. This time I made some plain cauliflied rice, shredded 90g of cauli, and fried it in some olive oil and sprinkled in a little dried garlic. It was fab!!!
The packs are around £3.50 each, but I normally get mine when they are reduced or on offer and freeze them!

Most relishes and pickles one might want to put on cold meats or cheese contain sugar. Patak's Hot Lime Pickle, which is available at most UK supermarkets and has no added sugar and hence a very low carb content (just from the very sour limes, I guess). It might be a bit hot for some people, but has rescued me from reaching for the ketchup, branston or HP many times.

Hi all
I'm new here but started Atkins in January (fell off for a bit but back on now!)
Anyway, I'm not much of a cook so I managed to hunt down a few ready meals. Bit more expensive but a real time saver :
Tesco Bistro Cod Mornay - £2.99 (I think!) 4.0g for the whole 360gm pack
Tesco Simple Solutions 2 Chicken Breasts with Leek, Cheese & Bacon - £2.99 - 1g carbs per breast
Tesco Simple Solutions 2 Chicken Breasts in Red Wine Sauce with bacon, mushroom & baby onions - £2.99 - 1.3g carbs per breast
I'm off to Sainsburys tomorrow for a change so I'll let you know if I find anything else.
Bye for now!

Hello all
I'm new to this forum but thought I would add a few things I've found along the way:
ASDA
2 peppered steaks with peppercorn sauce £1.98 (1.3gms per 1/2 pack) cooks from frozen in about 10 mins - really delicious
They also do a no sugar added tin of rhubarb which isn't too high in carbs
SAINSBURYS
2 Chargrilled Chicken Fillets with olive oil, coriander & lemon juice £2.99 (2.7gms per breast) a bit pricey but a great just bung in the oven quick meal and really tasty
2 Chargrilled chicken Fillets with olive oil, red onions, balsamic vinegar & basil £2.99 (1.7gms per breast) as above
TESCO
In their Simple Solutions range they do a pack of about 5 large chicken legs in a spicy coating which are really low in carbs. Hot N Spicy Chicken Legs I think they're called - £1.99 for the pack I think.

This thread is so helpful!
Have found a few things so far which are -
Safeway
Kabanos - Polish sausages are 1.1 carbs per sausage and nice raw or cooked
Also do great chorizo at the deli counter but not sure of the carb rating
Most supermarkets
Campbell's beef bouillon is lovely and pretty much carb free - great with onions and gruyere cheese to make french onion soup
Also the full fat concentrated Campbells Chicken and Oxtail soups are 3.9g and about 6g prospectivelly which is great as a soup or sauce for meat.

Hi guys,
If you have a Lidl near you, then they have a new packaged mayo out which is even lower than Hellman's, brand name Vita D'or.
per 100g =
727kc
0.93g carb
0.57g protein
80g fat
I haven't opened the jar yet, so I don't know what it tastes like. But their other one was OK so this should be, and it's a LOT cheaper than Hellman's.

Wing Yip and most Chinese Shops as well as some of the larger supermarkets stock Green Tea, which has great anti-oxidant properties as well as other benefits.
Temple of Heaven (Brand Name) Chinese Green Tea 250g packet at Wing Yip costs £1. I like to use the loose tea as it gives me control. A couple of grains is better than plain water.
You can also obtain Green Tea Teabags from there and other shops which work out dearer.

Someone mentioned the kabanos at Safeway being 1.1 g carb per sausage?
The ones they sell at Sainsbury's come 6 to a packet (entire packet weighs 150g) and the carb count is "less than 0.1g" per 100 g of kabanos!

SAINSBURYS -
In my Sainsburys in the allergys section they have packets of roasted pumpkin seeds, expensive at £1.29 for a little packet but they are much nicer than non roasted seeds for a quick snack.
Sainsburys Tzatziki - carb 3.7 per 100g, not too high in carb and makes a lovely dressing for salad etc.
Creme Fraiche - reasonable price and I think nicer and thicker than the normal soured cream.
They also have macadamia nuts.
ASDA -
They have big packets of nuts at very reasonable prices - the latest mix I got though salted had hazelnuts, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, almonds - this is in a purple foil pack.

I got Macadamia nuts in Tesco's today. The make is Sundora, they are 2.7g carb per 100g, cost £1.49.
Why are they so hard to get???

I don't know why they are so hard to get. Lidl often have them, in tins, but not always.
They do have an odd texture, I think, because they are so rich, maybe. However, I will look out for them in tesco's. Thanks for the tip.

Hi guys,
Tesco do a really good selection of chicken dishes in their "Finest Range".
I had Thai Chicken last week, which was lovely, quite lemony, only about 3 carbs per serving. I'm trying Chicken Chasseur this week, which is only 3.2 carbs per serving. They have other dishes too that I've tried and so far all good. Most are £3.99 for the pack but they contain 2 chicken breasts, so a meal for 2 or a meal for 1 over 2 nights.
Excellent choice if you want something easy and tasty to just stick in the oven when you get in from work. They freeze well too.
Enjoy

Reena was lured into the food hall at Marks & Spencer in Oxford Street today......
Really good ranges to try...the side salads are yum (had the green salad for dinner)...prawn cocktail (~ only 2.2g carbs per 100g)...little packages of sliced chicken fillets ideal for eating on the go....and dinky 50g packages of veggies that you can microwave for meals....deli fillers with few carbs....crispy bacon ....cream cheese with pepper/herbs....the list goes on...
highly recommended....

Found this Chicken Forestiere in Marks and Spencer last night - Chicken breasts (2) in a dark gravy - mushrooms and some wine.
The best bit only 0.7g carbs per serving. I am on induction so couldn't have any vegetables - so ate both portions. Lovely change from fried meat or roast chicken.
Will enjoy it even more when off induction with some veg.
I hope it doesn't do any harm.

1. Sansburys's and Safeway stock Splenda in large jars of granular form (£2.19), and tablet form (£1.45 for 100 tablets or £3.85 for 300 tablets).
2. Safeway - in section where they keep all packs of salads etc they have fresh dressings in little bottles....found a great Ceaser Salad dressing ~ £1.09 for 175ml ~ only 1g carbs per 100ml!
3. Waitrose - premium pork sausages at 0.8g carbs per sausage cost £2.09 for 8, or premium pork chipolata sausages at 0.4g carbs per sausage cost £1.99 for 12.
4. Marks & Spencer - thin cut bacon - really delicious due to the very fine cut slices ...and trace carbs.....forgot exact price, but often on offer.
5. Waitrose - organic crunchy/smooth peanut butter - £1.09....tastes really great compared to some of the other peanut butters with no added sugar..... ~ approx 10g carbs per 100g.
6. Most supermarkets - Loosely Cottage Cheese - has fewer carbs than all other brands i have seen.
7. Sainsbury's - Taste The Difference Cream Cheese - blue and white packaging - 99p - fewer carbs than philadelphia and other brands of cream cheese.
8. Heinz chopped tomatoes ~ 2.9g carbs per 100g...the lowest carb chopped tomatoes i can find! Their other products in the tomato range ae also very low carb.
9. Gia pastes - most supermarkets - chilli puree/sun dried tomato puree/garlic paste/pesto - all very low carb - approx 99p
All that i can remember right now, but i know i have more.....will be back when i can remember!

Hi you guys.
if any of you is still on the lookout for Splenda, I found some in a Sainsbury's in Maidenhead, Berkshire..
Meaning what?... that if they are still not showing on your favorite Sainsbury's shelves, you can ask for it and use that example..
Ignore this if liberally available now.
I had read a thread some while ago about people looking to get their hands on Splenda...
And yes... each time I go back to the UK, I cannot leave without the sacred trip to Sainsbury's or Tesco
eva123
Thu, Feb-13-03, 16:48
and I forgot this... because their ready meals are so tasty, I usually spend 30 minutes in the food aisles going through the indian chicken this, chinese chickent that, spinach chicken etc..... reading the labels and choosing those that have NO sugar at all.
Then, I look at the carbs counts. Depending on the amount, I either simply eat all the meat or split the dish in smaller (yet appreciable) portions.
That is it. You guys are spoilt for choice.
Here in Holland, it is soooooooooooooooo dry in terms of choices. We have to do the hard work...which I have to admit again, I do enjoy, it is interesting to select the foods and adapt them.

Sainsburys - in the "free from...." range - dairy free unsweetened Soya UHT ....only 1g carbs per 250ml and costs 55p for 500ml...
This is great to add to protein shake instead of water for a thicker consistency...or instead of milk for less carbs.

1. Sainsbury's - Kettle Preto Bean Salsa - £1.99 for 300g at 8.0g carbs per 100g. I add 1tbsp to mince - makes it taste like chilli!
2. Sainsbury's - in organic section (often next to eggs) - hazelnut butter - £1.79 - often hard to find in the UK unless you go to special shops.

GNC (I go to the one in Bond Street Station, London)...stocks Designer Whey protein shake (the one that we keep hearing about from our fellow american/canadian friends!) in Natural, Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate flavours....£13.99 for 340g or 908g (don't know price).
I'm impressed, you guys obviously know your stuff.
I can only add that Kabana (polish, pork) sausages are very low in carb - often just a trace. They are very tasty. You can either get them pre-packed or from the delicatessan in most supermarkets.
Good luck Reena, we are both at the same place at the moment I'm 204 lbs, heading down to 141 lbs (at the moment, I may re-adjust when I get there). We started at similar places too!
Curious to know that as a medical student, do you get into a lot of debate about Atkins or low carbing with your colleagues?

I've been on the prowl again this week, lol ...
1. Clearspring Organic Roasted Pumpkin Seeds - £1.29 for 55g. 0.6g carbs for the whole pack. Delicious. I found mine in the organic section in Sanisbury's, but apparentely available in most health food shops, and a few other supermarkets also.
2. Provamel from Alpro Soya (Organic) - approx £1.29 for 1litre. The organic one (red packet) had the lowest carbs at 0.4g per 100ml. The version with added calcium and vitamins was just slightly higher in carbs.
To be honest, i prefer the Unsweetened Soya UHT by Sainsbury's (in a post somewhere above)...they have a 1litre size for 95p (aswell as 500ml size)...which is cheaper than provamel.
3. Waitrose have some very low carb beef burgers in their fresh and frozen range:
4 Angus Beef Quarter Pounders (fresh) for £2.19 at 0.3g carbs per burger.
2 Angus Beef Grill Steaks (fresh) for £? (forgot exact price!) at 1.7g carbs each.
4 Angus Beef Quarter Pounders (frozen) for £1.99 at trace carbs each.
8 Angus Beef Burgers (frozen) for £1.99 at trace carbs each.
4. Herta Hotdogs (beware of preservatives etc...may stall some).
Have normal sized and jumbo frankfurters at 2g carbs per 100g. A packet of 4 jumbo frankfurters weighs 360g and costs £2.09.

Sainsbury's...New in their Just Cook range - 2 Chicken Breast Supremes. They have a cream cheese and pesto filling and are wrapped in italian style ham.....delicious!
Per chicken breast:
397 cals
43.6 protein
less than 0.1g carbs
24.8g fat
The carb count is very low, protein count is great and doesn't seem to contain much crap normally found on pre-made foods!
Oven cooks in 30 mins and costs £3.99.

Here are a few Ideas that work for me and my partner
UK supermarkets often have loss leaders and these rotate through all the main chains there is almost always 1 doing 2 for 1 on chicken breasts, beef or mince.. and remember to add Safeways to the list as they have really silly deals which change every Wed.
Also a little away from the UK but still on the shopping theme if you live in the south take a trip to France, Eurotunnel do early evening return trips from £15 and at the moment have a late afternoon deal for £9. Cheese and meat is about half the cost of the UK and the variety is enormous. If you drink bottled water Evian 6x2lt bottle are around £2.10, Other brands are cheaper…… (also if you have a disel car fuel is about ½ price so fill up there and save the price of the trip…)

I'm new here so some of these may already have been mentioned elsewhere. I'm rather partial to sausages and in Tesco I found:
Tesco's finest Hungarian Paprika Smoked Sausages. Not cheap but very tasty and 0 carbs/sausage.
Also, just tried their new smoked salmon and tuna sausages. Not fond of them but relatively LC at 1.4 carbs/sausage. (At 9g protein, approx 3g fat and 67 calories per sausage)
I found Splenda in Tesco and Boots at around £2.50.
Boots also had their chocolate for diabetics range. quite LC in Atkins terms in that most of the carbs are polyols but I know there's some controversy over their effects and also each bar (120g) had something like 3 times the RDA of polyols which is likely to have quite a laxative effect - so I stayed away from them.
Cheers

I'm also a bit worried about some of the carb counts of cheese that i've read. All the hard cheeses I see seem to have 0.1g of carbs per 100g. Is this possible? Does that mean i can have loads of cheddar??
LisaUK

If you're on Induction you can have up to 4 oz of hard cheese per day. Cheddar is fine! It's 'whey' cheeses that you avoid on Induction - ricotta and cottage cheese are two examples.

Hi all.
I think Reena has mentioned Sainsbury's roasted pumpkin seeds. I tried them, they're great. and 55 g pack only has .9 g. of carbs, according to the label. it is strange though, because pumpkin seeds are known to have much higher carb count.
can anybody explain this? I want to believe that label, because they do taste quite delicious.

Hi Rey, I saw Splenda in sainsbury's last night, but the candarel was lower. Also found no added sugar instant dessert in Asda, I believe its nice in shakes, or with cream. Sainsbury's also had silken tofu, on the shelves, not in the refrigerated section, think it was near the dried beans. It keeps for ages, so is handy to have in. Again, good source of protein, in shakes, or marinaded and kebabbed. Morningstar meat free "bacon strips" are tasty, as are quorn sausages, asda and sainsbury's. Looking forward to trying the creamy peppercorn sauce and blue dragon stir fry. This is an excellent forum, thanks

At Sainsbury their own brand organic sausages work out at 3.5 carbs for the entire 6 in the pack. So divide the total carbs and its under a carb per sausage!!!!!! Not bad going and they taste delicious. I went through their entire range reading the back of the packets and these were the lowest carb count I could find. They are £1.99 for six -so pricey I think, but worth it as they taste soooo good.
Also in the baking section there is cocoa powder for baking. Ive used this added to whipped cream with a dash of vanilla essence - (0 carbs from Sainsbury) with a teaspoon of slenda to make a chocolate mousse. You can be a little wild with the cocoa as the whole tub is 10 carbs and you dont need much to make a really gorgeous tasting chocolate mousse like creation!! Try it - you will think you have died and gone to heaven believe me!!

Just been to Holland and Barrett, they have a half price sale at the mo, and the protein powders are £11 compared with £23, and is absolutely huge, coming in 3 flavours. I have no appetite at the moment (is that really me) and breakfast is making me nauseous, so I am hoping to whip up something in the blender. Also bought chromium picolinate tablets (involved in fat and glucose metabolism), soya milk (unsweetened) and best of all "green and blacks" organic dark chocolate. A 20g bar by my reckoning is 9 carbs, bargain if you need a choc fix, and the darkness of it, makes it very satisfying. Also invested in some soya flour and ground almonds for that all important thickening and breadcrumbing thang. Get down there!!
Since June 1st, 11 pounds........... 3 weeks to fit into 3 pairs of trousers that would not look at me before. YEAH!!!!!!

Also at Sainsburys from their "Taste the difference" range-
6 Ultimate pork sausages:
5.2g of carb per 100g
Pack is 400g for 6 sausages....so 3.5g per sausage !!
They are yummy, pricey at £2.29 per pack but lovely for breakfast with bacon and eggs !!
6 Pork and leek sausages:
Only 2.2g of carbs per 100g
....so 1.5g per sausage (6 in a pack as above)
these are really yummy

But the best low carb product I've found is their Caesar Chicken & Bacon Sandwich Filling (you will find it in one of the large upright fridges - not with the main cheese and cold meats section). It is absolutely wonderful - you can eat it straight from the pot (which contains 750g) or use to make a great Caesar Chicken Salad - and at only 0.3g carbs per 100g, it's a real carb bargain :) You can also have it hot with/without melted cheese on the top

Found a wonderful ready meal in sainsbury's... (for those days when ur just to tired to cook)
They are mainly chicken based and in my sainsbury's they are in the chilled bit, next to the uncooked chicken products, some are high(er) in carbs than others but a few are low so read the lables. One I had was chicken wrapped in bacon, with cheese, Only 0.2g per half pack, and u get to chicken fillets in one pack, takes 30 mins to cook in the oven and when its done u can pour the cheesey sauce over ur veggies.. was yummy :yum:

I've found a new Uk supplier - www.lowcarbgoodies.co.uk - they stock mostly keto stuff + some others (inc ketostix, sweet n low stuff and feelingOK cake & ice cream mixes).
Their service is good, no problems with order, kept me informed (processing and dispatch e-mails) and cheap compared to others. They claim to have the lowest UK prices but I can't confirm.
(sorry if you get this twice, I'm having problems with the message board - it keeps just displaying the logo but nothing else, and says 'done' at the bottom of the page, it works if I refresh it a few times, but not sure how that effects posting...?)

Tescos now have 3 varieties of 'no added sugar' cranberry juice in their "Tesco Healthy Liviing" range. The cranberry juice is 1.8g for a 250ml glass, cranberry and rasberry is 2g for a 250ml glass and there is also a cranberry and orange one which I haven't got the stats for. Holland & Barratt are pretty good for LC stuff. They do their own brand of 90% soy protein powder for 6.99 which is a nice addition to the baking cupboard. The sweet n low bars aren't too heavy on the tummy and they do taste nice.

We had this new sausage this morning, and I don't think it's been mentioned in here.
6 to a pack of 400g, 1.15 net carbs per sausage. Nice and fat, with a crisp skin.
I liked them better than Sainsbury's Cajun, SB's chipolata and Waitrose extra lean premium, which are the only other LC ones we have found so far.

Hi LisaUK, just read your post about the Benjy's meatballs. I tried them when they first came out and couldn't get enough... until I looked at the carb content that is...15.5g per pack!!! I almost screamed in the shop! Don't know who told them that 15.5 grams per serving was low carb but I thought I'd let you know before you had any more!! The first few times I got them the carb content was not listed. So please be careful! Their chicken wings are ok heated and they're only 4g per pack.
LisaUK
Thu, Dec-11-03, 13:48
15.5???????? Good grief! When I looked at the ingredients (no carb count when I bought them) all it said was meat and spices. What the hell do they have in the darned things to get that carb count? I think an email to Benjy's is on its way. If they try to tell me they cater to 'all levels' of Atkins again though, I'll hit them

Sainsbury's Macadamia nuts - 60g - 2.8g carbs per pack - 79p

Asda's "Melba Toast" ~ 48p a packet for 30 'slices' is only 2.5g of carbs per slice but they are teeny, I use them instead of 'crackers', spread liberally with butter and any topping I feel the need for :)
Asda also sell the 'Alpro Soya milk' at £1.27 a litre, which I need to add that 'milky' taste back to my tea, a 50ml 'shot' is 1.4g of carbs ( I like my tea milky)

Apologies if this has already been highlighted, but ...
Came across Nimble Carbs So Low bread in Tesco today - they describe it as a reduced carbohydrate Nimble white bread - with 7.6g carbs per slice. Unfortunately, it still contains 'white flour' and all the usual suspects, which rather defeats the object of low carbing.
However, they do also sell a wholemeal (which is not being marketed as low carb) that is only 7.4g carbs.

Well, it's a lot less than the usual bread that's available.
However, I do agree that they are trying to jump on the bandwagon. Although I'm not keen that it's a white bread that being promoted as a 'low carb' product, I am nevertheless pleased that a 'low carb' product has been specifically produced for the UK market. Also, it does bring low carbing to the attention of British consumers, which can only be, IMHO, a good thing :)

Really delicious salad dressing found today - Sainsburys Taste the Difference Porcini Mushroom Dressing, bit pricey at 1.99 a bottle, but you dont need much - carbs per 100g - 3.3g - carbs per tablespoonful - 0.5g.

Hi all, I saw KitKat AND tubes of lo-card Rollos in Superdrug in Bristol yesterday. I didn't look at the KitKats as I don't like them, but the Rollos were something around 5g carbs per tube - quite a bargain I thought. :yum:

Hi everyone. I'm new here. This is a very useful thread. A couple of things no one's mentioned yet.
From Sainsbury: Helen Brownings Organic Speedy Sausages.
There are 12 little sausages in a pack for £2.09. The whole pack has 4 grams of carb. These are my favourite low-carb breakfast sausages. They taste great and the 'speedy' bit means you can grill them in about 5 minutes.
Available everywhere: Options instant hot chocolate drink.
This does have some evil glucose syrup in it, which means it's 6 carbs a serving. My husband drinks a cup a day to get his chocolate fix. I use one teaspoon mixed with a teaspoon of instant decaf coffee and cream to make a hot mocha drink at 2 carbs. I also occasionally mix it into whipped cream to make an instant chocolate mousse.

Body Perfect LC shakes at Tesco £1.20 per 330 ml. serving.
Apparently they haven't been mentioned in this thread for some reason.
They are a good value, vs Atkins'. Atkins flavor is better (imho) but the 40p savings per unit makes them a good alternative. At my Tesco I have only found (near SlimFast stuff) chocolate and strawberry flavors. There is supposed to be also a third flavor (cafe au lait or something like that).

Kung Li Sweet and Sour Chicken in a 400g tin
8.8 carbs for the whole lot.
There's sugar in this but they thicken with xanthan gum and guar gum.
Good to keep on hand for when you don't have time to cook.

Kwik save has sugar free Sunny Delight at half price - 54p for 1.5 litres. It's about 4g a glass but still the best subsituute for orange juice around.
Ethel, while you're in Lidl, try the frozen bratwurst sausages. No carby fillers and not unlike English sausages.

Hi Avlev - Ethel said it was in Lidl. There is no reason why you shouldn't cook Chinese style food. I had stir fried chicken with mushrooms and spring onions last night. Soya sause is a bit high in carbs but you don't need much.

Robert,
Safeway/Morrisons has Bratwurst that I like better than the 'regular size' Bratwurst from Lidl. I've found that the percent pork content is a good guide to the taste/texture. In brands of Bratwurst available in the UK it seems to vary between 86% - 96%.
What I really love from Lidl are the mini brats. These come 16 to a 340g pack for £1.79. They're called 'Original Nurnberger Rostbratwurst'. Dulano brand. They're 95% pork.
Avlev,
I've only ever seen low carb sweet & sour chicken at Lidl. (I forgot to mention the price. It's £1.19 a tin.) I've looked in the tinned food sections of Sainsbury, Tesco and Safeway just in case they might have something similar, but no luck.
About a year ago Sainsbury used to do a tinned chicken curry that had something like 8 carbs per 400g. Then they changed the recipe for reasons best known to themselves and added a bunch of starch to the product.

CO-OP haveTurkey & Pepper or Pork & Pepper kebabs for about £1.99. 4 or 5 in a pack with a carb content of 2g per kebab.
MARKS & SPENCER have premium butcher style pork sausages. £1.99 for 8 or 99p for 8 (chipolata's). Carb content 0.4g and 0.2g per sausage respectively. They also have mini frankfurter sausauges in the chilled meat section. A pack of 20 costs £1.09 and is very low in carbs. Ideal for snacking.
TESCO have Beef Grillsteaks in a pack of 6 for about £1.79. Again very low in carbs, about 0.5g per burger I think.
ASDA do their own quarter pounders in 2 varieties. One with Chilli, the other with Cheese. 2 packs of 4 for only £2.00..... bargain! Only 2g per burger and delicious too.
SOMERFIELD have cheese & onion sandwich filling. Not sure on the price, but carbs are about 0.8g per 100g. Great with bacon and eggs.
SAFEWAY are selling Polony for 79p. It is smaller and stubbier than most others, but only has 3g of carbs. Again, great for snacking.
If I think of any more, I'll let you all know.

Found the stats for this on the Sainsburys website, there are no stats on the chocolate bar itself, much lower carbs than most chocolate (Sainsbury's own brand dark chocolate is also low in carbs). Most chocolate bars are coy on their carb content but Lindt compares well to Green and BLack,
Lindt Excellence 70% Dark Chocolate
100g chocolate
540 calories
33g carbs
42g fat
8g protein
Green and Black Organice Dark Chocolate
100g chocolate
576 calories
45.5g carbs
40.5g fat
7.5g protein
Good if you want that occasional chocolate treat and quite reasonably price. £1.09 per 100g bar.

New Trebor sugar free mints. 45p in Kwik Save. Two flavours, mint and spearmint. Based on sorbitol (GI only 8 so much better than malitol).
Both taste OK. The spearmint is particularly pleasant. The other one...well I still prefer sugar free polos.
CO-OP prawn and mayonnaise sandwich filler. Very low carb and excellent heaped into half an avocado.

Holland & Barrett in Windsor: lots of LC stuff including Atkins bars (choc, breakfast and advantage), carbophobia "cake" mixes, LC kitkat/rolos. Also other brands of protein bar, but most rather unpleasant :( Also of course protein powder.
Boots: all Boots stores now seem to do Atkins breakfast and Advantage bars, some do choc bars also
To my utter delight, Sainsburys (at least my Bracknell one) now do atkins bars also (choc, wafer, breakfast and advantage) along with an organic protein powder (I'm sorry I don't recall the brand.. :( )

First the (moderately) good news:
Tesco has jumped in the proverbial bandwagon big time:
Atkins Advantage bars, 2 flavors, (£1.79)
Atkins Advantage shakes (330ml), strawberry, chocolate (£1.59)
Atkins Endulge "candy" bars, 3 flavors, (£0.99)
EAS Carb Control and Advantage bars (£1.79)
Nestle LC Rolo (£1.49)
Nestle LC Kit-Kat (£0.79 or 2 for £1.30)
End of good news!
Now the GREAT NEWS:
The Bio Synergy bodyperfect LC shake (only saw strawberry, they used to offer chocolate also) has been lowered in price to.....
....
....
£0.60 (from about £1.20)
And no, it didn't say it was a time-limited "sale".... it appears to be the new price.
At this price, there is no way I'd pay almost THREE TIMES more for an Atkins shake... no way.... yes, the Atkins one does taste a bit better (imho), but nowhere near 3 times better.
I immediately bought a couple, just to make sure it wasn't an optical illusion, and yes, I have the receipt in front of me... I paid 60p each.
I just hope this doesn't mean the body perfect shakes has been discontinued, or anything like that.

The body perfect shakes are "clones" of Atkins'. They have less than 2g of carb per container (330ml).
BP: (Per Shake) Energy 173.5kcal, Protein 20g, Fat 9g, Of which saturates 1.4g, Carbohydrate 1.5g, of which sugars 0.3g, Fibre 5g
Atkins: (Per shake) Energy 173kcal; Protein 20g; Fat 9.2g; of which saturates 1.5g; Carbohydrates 2g; of which sugars 1g, Fibre 4g
As you can see, the main difference between the 2 is in the price (3 to 1, almost)

probably stating the obvious, or someone might already have said about it, but Sainsburys or ASDA do a really great sandwhich filling of egg mayonaise which is quick and easy when you're in a hurry and don't have time to cook eggs - and it's only 1 carb per half pack - so it's good for a lunchy snack.

Hi, Im new to this forum and saw that Fiona had mentioned Protien Powder for sale at H&B at approx £5 or £6 per tin, for an unsweetened version and a little more for flavours, however yesterday I visited my local H&B and apart from very expensive Weighlifters powders they had nothing else and did not seem to know of any others that they might do, can someone let me have a brand name that I can go back to them with, I would like to try some baking recipies that I had previously found that calls for Protien Powder mixed with Soya flour, anyone had any sucess with this type of thing?? look forward to hearing from anyone that can help,

Steve,
Ask for soya protein isolate powder. This one is nearly flavourless and can be mixed with soya flour for baking (to cut the carbs as it is very low).
The one most people are talking about is Whey protein isolate which comes in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. They are great for milk shakes (with water or soya milk) but not so good for baking. The chocolate is the best flavour in my opinion.

Hi Robert
What have you tried to bake with whey?
I use whey protein powder for cooking often. I use it to make a sweet nut bread (great with coffee for a quick breakfast), also pancakes (with bacon and SF maple syrup) and big wraps to go around sandwich fillings. I use unflavored whey so I can use it for savoury things as well as sweet.

Hi neo_crone,
I've only tried the flavoured ones which is probably the problem. They have thickeners and other stuff in because they are designed for shakes. I am quite happy with the soya protein isolate for baking. I also mix it with cracked flaxseed to make a nice porridge for the mornings sometimes.

I've found Aldi to be a fantastic place to get my LC diet up and running. Lots of interesting (and for interesting read "foriegn") meats to try and cheap fruit and veg.
However, the Jewel in Crown are they Bratwurst Sausages they have in the meat counter. REALLY low carb (less that 1 per sausage) and they fry up like real bangers- fantastic with some Swede and Butter mash.....

After reading here about the low carb Cranberry drinks at Tesco and the soya protein isolate powder. I happily went shopping looking for these things. I bought the powder, but I didn't read the ingredients properly. It wasn't until after I got it home that I saw it contains a source of phenylalanine. I haven't heard good things about the side effect of this. I was hoping upon hope that the cranberry drinks at Tesco wouldn't contain aspartame, but they do and that's another chemical I try to avoid because of its side effects. I already suffer from heart palpitations and don't want to eat or drink anything that contains aspartame which would only make it worse.
What do others think about this?

I'm undecided about soya products (I still use them a lot in baking) but I'm definitely giving aspartame a wide berth after what I've now read about its potential for neuroendocrine effects. I do use Splenda, but really don't want the maltitol that comes with it. I'd really like to try Stevia, having heard many good things about it. It's not licensed for sale in the UK, unfortunately. Has anyone in the UK got any experience of obtaining it?

Does the container actually say that it contains aspartame? I am asking because l-phenylalanine is one of the amino acids, so I would expect it to be present in a protein powder.

Who said that splenda comes with maltitol? Since when?
The one I use in pill (tablet) form has nothing of the sort. In fact, I am unaware of ANY version of splenda that comes with maltitol.
There are of course products that combine the two of them (like Atkins and other LC bars) but that is done when they make the LC product.
As for Stevia, it is not available in UK shelves for the reasons you cite (the UK government wants more studies... and it's not clear who will pay for them, since stevia is natural, and hence patent-free). I suppose one could try odering through the net from international suppliers, but in theory it could be intercepted and impounded by the government.

Being a gardener, I wonder if I could just buy the plant or get the seeds. I found a German website (I come from Germany originally that's why I looked there) that sells Stevia Rebaudiana as ornamental tender perennials. If I grew the plant in my own garden, it should be my business what I do with it, for my own use of course. I have another go searching UK web sites to see if I can get hold of the actual plant....

Being a gardener, I wonder if I could just buy the plant or get the seeds .
Stevia is originary from Paraguay, in South America. Thus, I am not sure how well it would do under the British climate.
In any case, you'd do nothing with the seeds. The sweetening agent is in the leaves. But the unprocessed leaves are unlikely to serve well as a general purpose sweetener.
They typically extract the sweetening agent, and either sell it pure as a highly concentrated powder, or combine it with some sort of natural bulking agent (like inulin, a fiber) and put it in small packets similar to Splenda's. In the latter case, you just see a white powder, and use it as you would Splenda or a similar product.

Oops, sorry SucraPhobe, slight slip of the fingers there, Splenda has indeed not got maltitol in it. I should have said maltodextrin (which is the filler in the granular form of Splenda.) I was planning to try using crushed Splenda tablets for baking to avoid the maltodextrin but didn't quite get around to it, as I read some information on stevia which made me think this would be a far better option (if like me you are trying to minimise chemicals/additives etc, that is). I have now got hold of some powdered high strength stevia - hope to get a chance to experiment with it very soon!
