I read a clinic handout that said it should not be used long term. I have been using a reduced dose, 1/2 a 3 mg pill, for a few months after suffering insomnia. I did a search and found a study indicating the 3mg dose is 10X what's needed. I think ill start wit 1/4 a pill. GNC has some lower dose ones I think.

Mike,

Thanks for posting that link on melatonin. I have been taking 6 mg at night for a few weeks now and wondered about the dosage amount. I will cut it to 3mg for a week then half it again and if it is still working, half it again...

Wow. I take a 1mg pill when I need it, and that knocks me out. I have a bottle of 3mg (sent to me by accident) and I can only imagine what they'd do to me.

Actually, if the research at the link Mike provided is correct, the lesser dose is more effective. Perhaps you just furnished evidence to support that research. :) I take 6mg and I find that it helps, but not all that effectively. Your post does give me something to think about also... hmmmmm

I had a doctor tell me that up to 10mg was fine.

But Vit. D3, as I posted earlier, helps my insomnia way more than melatonin ever did.

I have heard that about V-D3 on the fasting forum, maybe that's why I sleep poorly in winter and have to take pills?

I had life-long insomnia that is SO much better now that I take 2000-6000 iu of D3 daily. I take it right before bed along with calcium but Zule says some people can't fall asleep if they take it right before bed. So she suggests taking it before 3pm.
