Hi guys,
I realized today that I've never actually introduced myself formally in the TDC. I live in Philly with my husband of years. We have a 4 year old, a two year old and a seven month old - all girls.
Our entire marriage has been marked by food crisis. First, when I got pregnant with my first I experienced nausea and vomiting for 9 months and then with my second I experienced severe nausea for 9 months and was on bed rest for 2 months - I had to be force fed and was only able to eat at all due to acupunture. Later, I found a magic pill that worked. Of course, I mostly ate the most refined easily digested carbs available. My husband could not cook because it would make me throw up, so we gave up homemade food almost entirely. My third pregnancy went more smoothly due to the miracle of modern medicine, but I still ate a lot of junk, no salad, and little meat.
To make matters worse (or better, depending on your perspective, better), after the birth of my second in 2005, my husband's food insensitivities got really bad and he went on an elimination diet which ended up cutting out 95% of what we formerly ate. We finally after the birth of my third in 2006 essentially landed with an Atkins-like eating plan based on what he coulnd't eat. So we just went on Atkins!
My husband has lost about 15 pounds and is stalled out at 140 - he might not be able to get much below that. I have lost almost 50 since I started at the end of January when I weighed in at 285. We finally have a food plan that works for us and keep us healthy. I am finally shedding those pounds that I gained in my 20's. While I've never been thin, ever, I did hover between 205 and 230 for most of my adult life. My first goal is to get one pound below that low end and then move on to a next phase of my diet to get into onederland and beyond.
We really enjoy our kids, puttering at home since it is a complete remodel, living healthily, and doing cultural work. We are getting chickens to raise our own eggs next week, and we are also very interested in farming, farm policy, local food sources, and food! food! food! I work for a nonprofit on educational policy and plan to homeschool - enough said about what I think about the schools :) I especially am incensed by the food industry's relationship to schools and I may become more active around that issue someday.
