Article in the Daily telegraph today makes for interesting reading. Especially the bit that says

"The sensation is like eating a nice plate of spaghetti," said Prof Luigi Ambrosio, who led the research.

Prof Luigi Ambrosio - Wasn't he the chef that served up the pasta and meatballs in "Lady and the Tramp".

Even the name of the company "Academic Life Science" looks designed to dupe punters into thinking it's well researched.

I'd hate to think what would happen if one of those pills became stuck in the throat.

Does it also make you hungry like pasta?

...or your small intestine.

I know psyllium isn't universally seen as a good thing by low carb dieters, but it sort of does the same thing, and is probably safer. At least when I used to take it, it made me feel like I had eaten something large.

It could make you lose weight on the short term only. Your stomach should keep expanding gradually in order to compensate. If you stop taking the pill then you'll be eating like a monster.

I think there is a hormone that is secreted in response to distension of the stomach. It triggers a sense of fullness. This is something I've had to battle because it leads to a conditioned response equating distension and satiety. When in ketosis, there is no hunger, but there is also no need for a full stomach since I am eating nutrient dense food. The same goes for all diets which emphasize healthy oils and fat. I noticed that I was overeating just to get that physical feeling; not to end hunger. SO yes, this is another short cut for those who don't want to do the work of deconditioning their body's subconscious responses. On the positive side, sometimes there are stresses enough in day to day life and using a "filler" for a while is appropriate. One thing at a time eh?

I saw on TV a dog ate a Tbs of "Gorilla Glue" after chewing on the bottle-- it reacts with water and swelled in the poor creatures stomach to almost the size of a soccer ball and had to be surgerically removed!

I think its a false notion that hunger can be satisfied by just filling the stomach, like Dr. A said its all about blood sugar and hormones.

It looks like lots of things contribute to saiety and the stomach swelling is one of them. I read an over-view of this recently wish I could remember where. LA Times or NY times I think.

Like Nancy, I think it's a complicated mechanism, and while I think blood sugar & hormones play a big part of it, I think the filling of the stomach is important too. Ask anyone who has had stomach stapling or the band put in their stomach. Having a small stomach helps.

Ever been hungry and chose between 300 calories of macadamia nuts or 300 calories of grilled chicken over a big bowl of mixed salad greens with a nice dressing on it? Big difference in hunger reduction, I find.

I agree. Pasta, like Chinese food, fills you for two hours and then you need to eat again. When I eat protein, it fills me for most of the day.

Can you elaborate on psyllium not "seen as a good thing"? Perhaps a new thread. I hadn't heard this before. Thanks :help:

I agree its complicated. I find myself eating at night, and when I think about, I'm really not hungry at all.

I've been experimenting with some intermittent fasting for the last week, and have found the stomach shrinkage is really great: it's so much easier to feel full and satisfied now with a couple of cups of tea or a small meal. The 'fullness' feeling is definitely important for me.

Re Psyllium: I found it too rough, too 'effective'. I worried that I was causing damage by 'sanding' my intestines with it.

Basically, what was said above. It's considered very rough on your insides.

I have to say that when I was overweight pre-atkins, whether I felt full or not had absolutely nothing to do with whether I ate. I could eat til I was sick cos I enjoyed the tastes and textures and couldnt stop once I started. A slice of cake would nearly always mean I would eat the whole thing and then move on to something else without being able to stop.

I dont think this wold have helped me at all!
