PETA attacks Michael Moore for eating meat (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19079604/?moore)
Animal-rights group says filmmaker is the true ‘Sicko’

PETA has a message for Michael Moore: You’re the Sicko.

The animal-rights group is blasting the filmmaker as a hypocrite for criticizing the U.S. healthcare system in his new documentary, “Sicko,” because they say he’s in such poor health himself.

“There’s an elephant in the room, and it is you,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk wrote in a letter to Moore.

Newkirk urged the rotund Moore to become a vegetarian, which many nutritionists say is a good way to lose weight, and visit PETA’s Web site GoVeg.com for veggie recipes.

Writes Newkirk: “As they say at Nike (sorry!): ‘Just do it.”

LMAO!!! Peta cracks me up.

I like how with several people they have beef (no pun intended, though it IS a good one) with, they take physical stabs at them to make them feel bad. Maybe because they know that meat is just so damn tastey.

PETA are such hypocrites. How the heck do they know Michael Moore eats a lot of meat? Do they hang out in his kitchen? He looks more like a carb junky to me.

Makes me wonder if PETA has done a health/weight survey of its own members? Umm...doubt it.

“There’s an elephant in the room, and it is you,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk wrote in a letter to Moore. Why do they like making fools of themselves? They'd get more sympathy towards their cause if they focused on the animal cruelty aspect and stopped making personal attacks and radical statements.Newkirk urged the rotund Moore to become a vegetarian, which many nutritionists say is a good way to lose weight, and visit PETA’s Web site for veggie recipes.Cheese pizza, chips, and cake are vegetarian.

A box of twinkies and a six-pac of Coke is also a vegetarian meal.

Twinkies wouldn't be. Gelatin (which I am pretty sure is in Twinkies) isn't vegetarian.

I can't stand PETA. I never could, even when I was vegetarian. They are a bunch of self-important extremists who don't even bother to update their members when a company or individual caves to their pressure and changes what they were complaining about.

Ingrid Newkirk is almost 60 years old and she behaves like a 5 year old. First of all, what business is it of hers if Moore eats meat or not? How would she feel if people were trying to publicly humiliate her into eating meat? She can't even write a reasoned argument about the benefits of vegetarianism without resorting to childish personal attacks. She ought to be ashamed of herself. PETA always made vegetarians and vegans look bad with their idiotic stunts, their airheaded, uninformed spokespeople, and their unadvertised militant agenda (I bet they don't tell their teenage veggie wannabe new members that most of PETA's leadership supports a ban on pets and that they euthanise strays and feral animals brought to them by people thinking they are like the ASPCA).

Gah I dislike them strongly.

I just read up on PETA's website, the response to people writing in to Michael Moore's website complaining about PETAs comments. They said that "elephant" simply referred to something not wanted. If I'm not mistaken, isn't that called a WHITE ELEPHANT and not just an ELEPHANT?! They are idiots, and I think they left out WHITE just so they could get a rise out of people. I mean, what did they think would happen after they told him to go on a vegetarian diet to lose weight and then called him an elephant? Please.

Plus, LStump, isn't it so childish to resort to namecalling? A grown woman calling a grown man an elephant? Disagree with his politics, his films, his views, but leave his weight out of it. The discourse in this country has become so negative and nasty it's depressing.

What does the movie sicko have to do with michael's weight. The two have a very lose correlation.

that's what they were saying. They said that they were not calling him an elephant, but rather a white elephant, which is something that no one wants around or wants to talk about. Either way, they knew what they were doing and wanted to throw in a low blow and make people think they were calling him an elephant (IMO). This is a 60 yr old woman resorting to name calling... It IS ridiculous. It just goes to show you why everyone hates PETA, they are a ridiculous group of people (of course, not ALL of them.. just to be PC) and seem to care more about animals than people. I mean, would they go around calling cows elephants? LOL!

Apparently, since the movie has to do with health care, they see him as being a hypocrite because he isn't healthy....
Wth.

Not healthy by PETA's very narrow definition of the word, that is. All of us carnivores are unhealthy, according to them. I would say by looking at Michael Moore, he loves carbs more than he loves meat.

Hmm. Healthy people and "sick", thin and large, all people need adequate healthcare either way if they go to a medical facility. They really had no point at all.

An "elephant in the room" simply means a big problem that is being ignored. The image of something as large as an elephant in an average room, with people refusing to acknowledge it's there and concentrating on lesser issues.

A "white elephant" is something that is no longer wanted, or that used to be useful but is now a liability.

Nasty comments about Ingrid Newkirk and Michael Moore withheld........

I'm not fond of brisket, but a nice rare steak would be good about now.

Did you see the film, or are you just generalizing because you don't like Moore for whatever reason? Can you tell us which parts were "fiction?"

Fahrenheit 911 hit theatres when less than 50% of Americans were against the invasion of Iraq. The facts in Moore's film may not have contributed greatly to that number changing (actually reversing - now more than 70% of Americans are AGAINST the Iraq debacle), but he opened up the dialogue with his film. He expanded the dialogue.

He's doing the same thing with health care. The second biggest issue to Americans according to polls is health care, right behind the mess in Iraq. Folks are waking up to the fact that Americans get the short end of the stick with health care. It's too expensive and too inefficient. Insurance companies should not be in the business of "diagnosing," which is what they do when they refuse to pay for treatments. Medical care is a human right and should not be within the purview of a for-profit system. I support a nationalized health insurance program in the U.S., akin to something in France, Canada, or any of the other western industrialized countries, all of which have it.

So Moore is a little behind the curve on this one - health care as a problem has already been voiced, and more than 50% Americans favor some kind of plan that insures everybody. Not just the rich, not just those who have employers who pay for it. Everybody.

Which parts, though, were fictionalized? I haven't yet seen the film, but maybe you can help us out and tell us which parts weren't true?

A "white elephant" is an oddity or any strange item that has no discernible function. An "elephant in the room" is something that is too big too ignore but that no one wants to acknowledge, such as a family member's alcoholism or addiction.

Considering that Moore's apparent ill health is sort of a background noise to all of his health-care related polemics, it think "elephant in the room" is more apt.

According to Moore (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/movies/1402AP_Film_QA_Michael_Moore.html) he isn't unhealthy.

AP: Have you had any health-care nightmares of your own?

Moore: I've been very lucky. I have not had any serious illness or whatever. Tonsils and appendix, that's my health-care history. I think genetics do play a lot in this. My grandfather lived to 88, my grandmother lived to 95. These things certainly help. And since belonging to the Directors Guild, I've had great union health coverage that most Americans don't have, because most Americans don't belong to a union.

I think he's on his way with this movie. If he has the goods on the Insurance and Pharmaceutical Industries, I can't wait to see if he'll go after the FDA and the Diet Powers That Be. But yeah, someone should tell the guy about low-carb.

I'm sure he knows all about low-carb diets. He can't do it if he doesn't want to. Its like MAKING an alcoholic or drug user go to rehab. Sure, it MIGHT (and that is a strong might) work for a bit, but once they realize it isn't what they want, they'll be back to their own ways. Losing weight and gaining, and losing and gaining, is worse for you than just being heavy. My mom doesn't want to lose weight. She is 5'2 and 220 pounds. I've told her about low-carb, which she knows about and she knows works, but she just doesn't want to lose weight. *shrug* To each his (or her) own. I would never force my beliefs on someone else.

I watched Michael Moore on Bill Maher's show, where Michael said that he "recently discovered fruits and vegetables". He admitted being hypocritical in terms of not taking care of his own health , eating mostly meat and potatoes and being a "couch potato" too. He was happy to report losing weight just by cutting out junk food and moving his body.

It seems Michael Moore has become the new favourite person to hate.

It's like he was in, now he's not.

It's just totally B_tchy!

And we can hate him double, both for his politics and because he's fat!!

Mark my words, PETA will become an even bigger trouble for us in the future.

I'm wondering when PETA is going to release evidence that it's members are all shining examples of health and fitness, and they therefore have a right to pronounce others unhealthy/unfit.

I was a fat vegetarian...maybe I should write a tell-all book :)
