I am celebrating my son's 2nd birthday this weekend. Of course there will be cake and ice cream and lots of food. I am the chef and will control most of the menu. Grilled burgers, hot dogs, and chicken breasts. My wife will be getting the cake and such. Since I can easily avoid the cake, the buns and so on, I was thinking about getting low carb ice cream.
My question is this: Better tasting, more satisfying regualr ice cream only once (like Dairy Queen or Rita's frozen custard) or buy a 1/2 gallon of Edy's low carb ice cream. The thing with the low carb ice cream is that I will probably be the only one eating it and thus, polish it off in 4-5 days. I could also just skip the ice cream altogether and pour some splenda sweetened cream over some fresh blueberries????
I am now down to 316.8, approaching my lowest ever (314) and pray that anything like this will not destroy my progess.

If you can get Blue Bunny Freedom bars in your area they have a black raspberry with chocolate covered bar that is only 1 net gram per bar....so that you can enjoy them as a treat once in a while......I found mine at Walmart.
Oh, also WTG on your progress thus far! keep up the good work!!!!!

Judging from your profile, you are still early in your rededication to low-carb, right? If you can't have ice cream in the house without finishing it in 4-5 days (congrats on that, btw, it would only last 2 days in my house with me) then ice cream is a trigger food for you. My advice is to avoid it while you are in the early stages of losing weight. Have a treat that won't set you off like the berries & cream.
You've got a long haul to lose the weight, my advice would be to just have enough treats so that you don't feel so deprived that you chuck the low-carb dieting out completely, but try to limit them so your weight loss is still fast & strong. Eating that ice cream in 4-5 days will grind your weight loss to a halt for this week.

I would try to make homemade, since you can make a small amount and as Valerie said, the big temptation is to have that half-gallon of Edy's hanging around for days. If you search the forum, there are recipes on how to make low-carb ice cream. I think homemade always tastes better than store-bought, PLUS you can choose the flavors you love. :yum:

Yeah, as I was typing that thread, I had already in my mind decided that berries and cream would be the way to go. I actually had a small bowl of them on Saturday and didn't gain anything so I suppose it won't hurt me again this weekend. Besides, I am on vacation and plan on cranking out some serious yard work and going to the gym so the berries and cream should have no effect on me.

I don't have an ice cream maker. I bought one a year ago ($40-$50) and it didn't work very well at all so I returned it.
Do you know of any magical ice cream recipes that do not involve an ice cream maker??

Search for "ziploc" ice cream on the forum. It's a little gimmick where you make ice cream with two ziploc bags, with salt between the two bags and the cream & sweetener in the inside bag. It's pretty cool actually.
Here, I found it:
ZIPLOC ICE CREAM
1 tablespoon artificial sweetener
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup Heavy Cream
6 tablespoons Table Salt (or rock/coarse salt if you have it)
3 cups Ice
1 Sandwich Sized Ziploc Bag
1 Gallon Sized Ziploc Bag
How To Prepare:
In the sandwich sized ziploc, combine the sugar substitute, vanilla
extract and heavy cream. Seal the bag and shake lightly to mix ingredients.
In the bigger ziploc bag, add 3 cups of ice (or fill
half the bag with ice)and add 6 tablespoons of salt.
Place the seal sandwich sized bag into the gallon
bag and seal the gallon bag. Shake the entire contents for at least 4 minutes (shake longer for harder ice cream).
Once desired hardness has been achieved, remove smaller baggies and rinse throughly with cold water (if you miss this step, you may wind up with salty ice cream!)
Recipe makes about a 1/2 cup of ice cream.
It's a lot of cream, so it's still a treat! You don't want to be eating this everyday, this much cream is 411 calories, that's alot, but it would go well with your berries for a treat! ;)

Whew! I read your post and thought--oh-oh, slippery slope! (If you take a good look, you'll see my butt print all over that one. And there she goes again!) So pleased that you figured that one out for yourself, AND that you turned to this forum for advice.
Stay the course. When in doubt, don't.

You know, I think this is one of those YMMV things. I buy the Breyer's Carb Smart Ice Cream (4 carbs per 1/2 cup) and don't have a bit of problem with my weight loss. I also know of one person (Dean) who got to goal eating lc ice cream every day (not sure which brand he ate).
I do agree with the other posters, though that if you are just getting started, it's better to hold off until later. Once you've been doing this for awhile though, you could try it to see how it affects you. I think this has to be a lifestyle change, so having lc ice cream is a reasonable choice compared to all the other high carb goodies that are out there. Just my humble opinion. :)

I make "quick ice cream" in my little Cuisinart--1/2 cup frozen berries, 1/4 cup cream and a packet of Splenda. I've also been told this works with a Magic Bullet or blender too. The texture is just like soft serve and if you overprocess it by accident you have a nice little milkshake. :D

great question and good job for thinking ahead! I just found some low carb ice cream bar type things. They are the ones with the chocolate coating. What about just getting a box of those. mine are like 3 net carbs. Less in a box of those than in a tub of ice cream. And the serving size is perfect.
Let us know how it goes!

Hi LCrobie
I was wondering how you did at the party and how you managed the icecream thing. Thanks for the post Annie, I'm going to look for the Blue Bunny Freedom bars. Right now I've been enjoying some Carbsmart by Bryers for a treat. What a luxury to have icecream from time to time and still stay LC!
