Diabetes and obesity centre opens
A research centre which medical experts hope will lead to better prevention of diabetes and obesity has opened.
The Medical Research Council opened the Epidemiology Unit at North Cambridgeshire Hospital, in Wisbech, (UK) to assess volunteers in a lifestyle study.
The council spent £100,000 (US$200,000) on the unit which will study 5,000 local people's habits to determine factors that can lead to obesity and diabetes.
The Wisbech area has higher than average levels of obesity and diabetes.
Debilitating diseases
A study by the Association of Public Health Observatories shows obesity levels of 28.8% among residents of the Fenland district compared to a national average of 22.7%.
The prevalence of diabetes in the area is at 4.2%, with the national average being 3.3%.
Prof Nick Wareham, director of the unit, said the new facility would provide opportunities for "ground-breaking research".
"I am convinced that this research will lead us to important discoveries about the links between lifestyle and health and how we can help to prevent these debilitating diseases," he said.
