Are any of you going to try Alli? I heard it targets fats but I was wondering if it would work doing lc. I have been stalled since January. The first 100lbs came off fairly easy but the last 45 are not budging. just wanted to get some opinions on the Alli product.
Thanks

Pamela:
I would be hesitant to try it while following a l/c or Atkins type plan since the product indicates that you have to have a minimum intake of fat.
I'm interested to know what others think as well.

My understanding is that Alli is supposed to be more of a deterrent than anything else to help dieters keep fat intake low. If you have too much fat (for the Alli med, it would be normal to an Atkins dieter) you will likely get diarrhea and loose stools issues as the med binds to fat to take it out of the system unused. And that's how it comes out unused, in diarrhea and loose stools.
I wouldn't try it unless I was going pretty low-fat.

I'm pretty sure I heard it wasn't effective unless you are doing very low fat. I also heard warnings for people using it to keep extra clothes available at all times due to the chance of soiled clothing. . .I'll keep my money on LC thanks.

Here's a nice article: http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/diet.fitness/02/08/alli.gupta/?eref=rss_latest
I particularly like number 3:
3) There are side effects, and they are not pleasant. Since the medication works by blocking fat from being absorbed in your intestines, patients may experience diarrhea, bloating and cramping.
No thanks, I'll pass (no pun intended  )

Please please PLEASE do not use that stuff. I've used Orlistat, and it's horrible. Even thought I was doing a super low fat diet, I still was nauseated and sick non stop and it just is not worth it.
I too will stick with low carb.

The term I've head in connection with Xenical and Alli that has stopped me from trying them is "anal leakage."
Shudder.

Hey pamela, glad you started this thread..i was just looking into this for myself.
I think it sounds like a great diet/weightloss aide...but i think after watching the video that you'd really have to alter a true atkins plan and make it lowfat before starting...becuase 15g of fat per meal is alot less than most people on a traditional LC plan eat. Personally, i'm going to change over to the alli plan without the actual product and see how i do with the lower calorie, lower fat lowcarb plan before spending all that money. Let me know if you try it and what you think.

Then after losing a lot of weight by being sick and having constant diarrhea, you STILL haven't learned how to eat right to keep the weight off and you gain it ALL back. No thanks! We still don't know the long-term detrimental effects on the human body!

i needed to hear from other folks on this topic because i am prone to try something... anything at times. what i really want from a product is to relieve the hunger or the feeling of deprivation. i experience lack of hunger from time to time but it always returns. when i gave up sugar completely i did rid myself of cravings for awhile. the most succcessful time i ever had was years ago on phen-fen. of course i value my life more that i value the feeling of thin so i went off it as soon as the side-effects hit the news. from that product i felt full from small amounts of food. i could eat anything but i never wanted much and the weight fell off. my brain lost its sense of craving and i felt satisfaction. this is what thin people must feel like. i have never since felt that way again. so the struggle continues and i am back to regaining my perfect weight. this time i am looking at it from a more relaxed place and seeing myself as already there. i would use a product if they could come up with a safe way to make my brain rewire itself. we can put men and women into space but we can't figure this one out..... hmmm.

I was at Wal-Mart over the weekend and saw this very overweight woman reading the back of a box of Alli. I wanted to stop and talk to her sooooo bad to let her know that if she bought that, she might also want to buy a box of Depends to go along with it! I feel sorry for people who are unaware of the consequences of that stuff.

I took xenical back in the day, what a horrid medication! I have since been reformed and I know low fat isn't for me. I am trying to keep my fat UP so this Alli makes no sense to me. I wouldn't use it.

On another thread I wrote:
You can do Alli on LC without the negative side effects but you have to make your food choices lower fat too.
Simple if you have Dr Atkins New Carbohydrate gram counter because it lists side by side carbs, protein and fat gms.
All this is is CHOICE. I am changing my dietary habits permanently, Alli helps me to loose more quickly but I am the one CHOOSING LC/LF foods in portions that don't stuff me but keep me satisfied.
I am the one CHOOSING to change my sedentary ways by getting a minimum of a 2 mile walk in every day, taking the stairs, parking a bit further from the store, etc.
I am the one CHOOSING to drink plenty of water, take a multivitamin/mineral and Omega 3s, get the best sleep each night that I possibly can...
No side effects, just slightly faster weight loss while I CHOOSE to change my bad habits of many, many years.
I know plenty of people who eat LC, don't exercise, don't change portions, don't change choices and lose lots of weight.
Then they gain it back because they didn't exercise, didn't change portions or food choices and they feel badly about themselves.
Everything is relative to your own experience.

HI Fay.
I just wanted you to know that you are not alone. I too take ALLI. I have been taking it since the 14th of June. The only thing I changed about my WOL was that I take my vitamins before I go to bed instead of early in the morning. I haven't changed my fat intake. My carbs are still below 20g, and my calories are the same. I still exercise everyday. I still drink my water. I still do all the things I did before. I haven't had any of the unspeakable side effects they you read about. The only it does is keep me from being constipated (sorry TMI) I really don't see that as being a negative side effect. When I was debating on whether to get it or not, I read about it. Eventhough I read all these spooky things. It still look like a benefit to low carb and not a hinderance. Well I guess you can say "if you didn't change anything, how do you know if Alli is a benefit?" Well before I started taking them I couldn't get the scale to move to save my life. I mean it moved, but up and down. The day after I started taking them I lost 3.5 pounds and the total for the week was 8.5 pounds!!! Is it a coincedence that is to be determined. When I found them I wasn't looking for a quick fix just some help without stimulants to give me the jitters. So far it is doing exact what I asked.

The day after I started taking them I lost 3.5 pounds and the total for the week was 8.5 pounds!!! Wow, that's impressive. I talked to a woman in Sam's Club the other day who was handing out brochures about it and it does sound intersting since I don't like the stimulants either. I'm taking a diet supplement by Douglas Labs right now but am thinking out tryng Alli. I didn't do well with the high fat diet that some people do well with here, and I like lean meats so it seems like a good fit.

I took xenical last year and it was a horrible experience. That anal leakage is no joke. One time that happens and you'll never eat fat again.
Also one of the side effects of Alli is suicidal thoughts.

I'll kill whoever said that.
*snort* I'm sorry, I just... wow. As if anal leakage weren't enough, you know? Jeez.
More power to any of you that take it. I managed to take Metformin for awhile without it bothering me for more than a day or so (it causes many GI distress), but man... the more I read about this drug, the more I think... I'll pass, thanks.

Another company makes billions of dollars off desperate fat people..... and we all support them by going 'Oh yes it's a legitamite choice!'.
BS.
What studies have they done on widespread use of this stuff? None.
They are yet again basing diet on the faulty Low Fat Matrix.
The Low Fat Diet is such a huge failure, that they have to have drugs to make people comply.
Some of you choose to be all 'fluffy bunny' and supportive about it, fine, but I choose to be negative and disagreeable about it!
Yet another fraudulent lifestyle, this time constructed by skinny white men in lab coats.

It would be wonderful if we supported each other instead of being so negative. Who are you to know what works for EVERYONE? Not all of us are the same. I did Induction for over a month with no weight loss, so I come from the mindset of being supportive of each person's PERSONAL journey and not being judgmental. Not everyone has the same results doing the exact same things as you or I are doing. It's highly individual.

I've been constipated for the last couple of weeks. Maybe I should try Alli, I could lose a couple extra pounds *and* get things moving again! ;)
I do think Kandra has a good point, we should be more supportive of each other. Alli might not be a good fit for most low-carbers because we tend to eat relatively high fat, but there are some who are doing low-fat as well as low-carb and this might be a good fit for them for now.

Right on Kandra!
No "anal leakage" here. No suicidal thoughts except when I weighed 232 lbs. Or when I started LC over and over and couldn't get past 192.
I'm taking it for one month and see how I do. I may continue but I may not.
I am losing pretty fast and able to do more exercise because of it.
I don't consider myself desperate at all, instead I am very much in control this go 'round. I've done my own research regarding Alli. There are several verbatim studies on the net.
That means the complete studies exist to be read and understood.
Problems occur for some people when they eat more than 15-20 g of fat at one meal. I just happen to prefer lower fat foods naturally.
I love veggies, chicken and seafood. I love plain yogurt and wasa crackers and cottage cheese. As I lose I need/want less food so it works out.
Just call me "Bugs"!
I choose to be the positive and happy type.
And a positive and happy person hearing about your choices too!
Not everyone wants to eat heavy cream sauces, red meats, etc etc in large quantities.
That's the beauty of choice.
Have a maaaaarvelous day!

:cheer: YOU GO KANDRA AND FAY :cheer:
I understand that there are people out there that have opinions and are skeptical about Alli. I also know that half of them have never tried it before. I believe that people fear what they don't know. All I know is that I saw it, I tried it, and it worked. ENOUGH SAID!!! OH, and by the way..........................I DO NOT USE A LOW-FAT METHOD AND I DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS!!! If I listen to everything I hear or read I would not be Low Carbing. It is bad enough that people on low fat diets come to the war zone to ridicule the low carb WOL and the people on them, but when fellow low carbers come to ridicule another low carber. NOW THAT'S JUST WRONG!!!!! I posted here to let Fay know that she was not alone and that I support her decision and hope her, I , and anyone else will have continued success, and that's what I will continue to do!!!

What kept me from trying Alli was in their publication "You think you are losing it" they referred to some of the effects as Treatment Effects, not side effects. They know you are going to have the runs and fatty, oily farts. They suggest you carry a change of clothes at all times. And this is part of the "treatment."
NO THANKS!!

I started taking it this week and haven't had any of the awful side-effects, either. I definitely don't eat low fat - lots of my meals have twice as much fat as they advise.
