that my doctor decreased my thyroid medication by 50 mcg. I was on a high dose, 250 mcg, and my last test showed that I was close to hyperthyriod.
I was decreaseed without so much as a phone call. This really irritates me.
I wish doctors would talk to their patients and explain what they're doing and why. I just don't understand the no information rule they seem to have.
I'd like to be informed and I do a lot of reading to that end but doctors don't so their part and explain what is going on.
I think I'm going to give my doctor a lecture soon!!!

I have a wonderful doctor that ALWAYS sends me test results. For other doctors I just ask for them. I collect them in a notebook so I have a history. I like to look up what the tests are and what they mean on the internet. :D
The tests belong to you, ask for them!

That's right, ask for them.
I've been on thyroid medicine for almost 4 years. My thyroid medicine has been changed a little but I've always been informed. I'm 90mg of Armour Thyroid and 1/2 tablet of Levoxyl 75mcg.
You definitely need to talk to your doctor about giving you the results and explaining why your medication is being changed to a different dosage especially if you're having any old symptoms or new.
I hope everything works out.

I can not agree more, never ever let a doc make a decision to change your thyroid meds without talking to you and explaining why first. Also do not disregard the idea that it might be a mistake as well...the blood work is just a part of the issue...how you feel at the dosage you are on is very important and he should have spoken to you...you should have had symptoms of hyperthyroid to justify a dosage change as well...not just the blood work is a little off...some of us operate better at slightly higher thyroid than others...how do you feel?

May I ask a dumb question...
If the doctor didn't talk to you about it, then how did you know that the doctor decreased it?? How did you know to go from 250 mcg to 150?

I found out when I went to pick up my new prescription. She decreased it by 50 mcg so I'm now on 200 mcg.
I think I've stopped losing weight and I'm starting to get achy. I'm changing docs.

Thanks!! I didn't mean to sound snarky, but I just couldn't put that together.
Yeah, I'm a women's health care provider, if my doc did that to me, I'd be pissed and wonder what else they're not telling me and probably start looking for a new doc. Maybe I'm lucky--I've had really good luck with all my providers (I don't know if it's because they know I'm a provider myself or because I'm just a cheeky bitch and they're scared of me and don't want me calling them bothering them:lol: easier just to tell me everything I want to know.)
Good luck Tx!!! Hope you're feeling better!!

I am looking for a new doc. I live in a major city now so I'm going to try to find someone that has more experience in endocronology.
Thanks Lisa for your response. This doctor treats me as if the only thing she should treat is my weight. I just lost my first 35 on Atkins and now with this reduction in my meds I'm sleeping everytime I come to a standstill and I've stopped losing weight.
I'll be finding someone who knows what they're doing soon.

Do a google search on thyroid doctors.
This is the website that you will click on. http://www.thyroid-info.com/topdocs.htm
This is how I found my doctor, she's an endocrinologist and she's awesome. She is here in Houston, TX.
Good Luck.

Went to the new Doc who is an Endo/Thyroid/Obesity specialist. I really liked her and she agreed with me that my thyroid test was just on the cusp of being out of range. She also agreed that they would never have lowered my meds that much at one time. I got blood done and their going to redo my prescription. She's also putting me back on Synthroid since it's more consistant than the generics I've been on.
Funny thing, my old Doc's office didn't want to fax over my records and when I asked they said it was because they didn't refer me to her (my insurance lets me self-refer). They're incompetent jerks! You have to really take your healthcare in your own hands these days. I know there are a lot of good docs and practitioners out there but there are not so good ones too.

Regardless of whether they referred you to this new doc or not, you have a right to your health records. It might cost you $25-$35 to get them but you have a right to them.

Chris,
I noticed that you live in Carrollton TX. I am in the area also.
Dr John Launius in Lewisville is a WONDERFUL thyroid Doc. He treats mostly by symptoms & does not go by TSH. He likes to treat with Armour but will prescribe whatever you like to use.
He does not take Insurance but his fees are VERY reasonable. He is about $70.00 for an office visit & $30.00-$45.00 for tests. They will give you the forms to file with your Ins Co.
The only thing that I would caution you about is that he tends to prescribe anti-depressants. I just do not get them filled.
He is only one of about 6 Drs in TX that are good for thyroid disorders.

Here's an update on the new meds from the new doc (now taking 225mcg). Things seem to be better and people around me have been noticing. I feel more like myself.

Glad to hear you're doing better.
I think there is a 30-day "rule" about being able to get your records. Unless your doctor gives you the test results, you have to wait until the test is 30 days old to get it from the lab.
Maybe this is so that the doctor can then charge you again for a visit to come in and discuss the test!
BTW, people didn't used to have access to all the info that we have now. (through the internet.) So the doctors we are seeing today, were in medical school learning to deal with patients who had no way of learning about their health issues. So they treat patients as though they were complete idiots who know nothing whatsoever about their health. GRRR!!!
I'll bet the younger doctors-in-training right now will be more aware that their patients want more info than the old-school docs are.
