Right, I'm going to go into phase 2 from tomorrow.
As I understand it, I can add either a serving of fruit or starch to my diet.
I've decided to go with the fruit. Although to be honest, I'm a bit scared by the thought (cause I love fruit and think it'll be a struggle to limit myself).
As it's summer and berries are very much in season, I bought some (blueberries and rasberries) in the shop yesterday in anticipation of starting phase 2 tomorrow. Was thinking of having them as dessert (after dinner).
But I'm not sure that's the best way to start off.
I'm thinking that perhaps I should add some dried fruit to my flaxmeal muffins instead. I eat these as my pre-gym snack. Does this sound like a good idea?
Is it better to have fruit in the morning? or afternoon? or evening?
Also since I'm adding something in (fruit), does that mean I am increasing my overall calorie intake? Or do I reduce something else to compensate?

I think adding in a fruit to start off with is an excellent idea and the berries are a great choice.
The up-dated food lists recommend not having the fruit for breakfast, but rather to save it for later in the day, say lunch or dinner or a snack. Be careful of any dried fruit as they can be higher in carbs and many of them have added sugar. Read the labels carefully on this one! Fresh is always best if you can do it!
You might be adding in a minimal amount of extra calories. Remember fruit isnt' that high in calories. Watch and see how your body responds to it.
I would say to just have 1 added fruit this week, then next week maybe add in another or perhaps one of the other things that can be added in, but whatever you do.....Be careful of adding in grains. Many SB'ers trying to lose weight or those who have insulin issues, never add in grains or do it very seldomly. Just go slow, try things out one at a time and see how your body reacts! :)

I agree with what Charran has told you. :agree:
It is not recommended to have fruit in the morning....at first....later into your plan, you can try that. Have 1 fruit a day for the first week.
I've always eaten dried apricots and prunes and this fact alone may have caused my weight loss to be slow but I liked them :yum: and was careful with portions.
So yes, go with berries at first...canteloupe too. :yum:
I love summer and all it's great fruit!!

I love summer fruit. Pre-SBD I could sit and eat a kilo of berries. I love fruit in general. So limiting them will be hard. It'll take will power to only eat half a cup of berries knowing that I've got the rest of them in the fridge.

As with many other foods...portion control is key. Be sure to have your fruit with a protein.....ie: yogurt and berries or cottage cheese and berries. :yum:

In an ideal world, where weight-control is not a problem, it would be berries and cream. :yum:
I might have them with some soy yogurt instead.

I don't think Cool Whip is dairy. Check the ingredients to be sure. Ready Whip or whipped cream in a spray can IS dairy, however.

I'm pretty sure we don't have coolwhip here but I'm sure we have something similar. Question is though, don't whipped toppings usually have added sugar?

with a little dollop of Cool Whip Lite Having just checked out the ingredients for Cool Whip Lite, you might want to have a rethink before eating it again.
Ingredients: WATER, CORN SYRUP, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (COCONUT AND PALM KERNEL OILS), LESS THAN 2% OF SODIUM CASEINATE (FROM MILK), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, XANTHAN AND GUAR GUMS, POLYSORBATE 60, SORBITAN MONOSTEARATE, SODIUM POLYPHOSPHATES, BETA CAROTENE (COLOR).

Thanks for the ingredient info, Demi. I will definitely be careful not to overdo it! :) That's why I only have a dollop.
2 TBS has 20 calories and 1 gram of sugar, and since it was mentioned in the South Beach menus as a topping for the s/f jello dessert, I felt pretty safe having it. It's been manageable so far, but I'll be sure to watch my portions!

This week I've been having a portion of fruit. I've been having the fruit as a dessert (after dinner) with some soy poor-excuse-for-cream but which is usweetened and lowfat and a sprinkle of splenda.
So far so good. But I reckon the scales will tell me the story come Monday.
Now I'm wondering what my next move should be. Should I stay at this point for another week, perhaps trying a different fruit - say bananas or apricots or cranberries.
or should I be brave and add a starch.
Also what's a good starch to add first? I plan to stay away from flours etc. and grains (based on advice etc.).

First of all, you should see what the scales have to say on Monday.
If you're happy with what they show, then you could perhaps progress to a starchy veggie, sweet potato for instance. Or, of course, you could try a different fruit.
However, it's really better to take it more slowly than you have done already with the fruit. Try some every other day for the first week, check the scales at the end, and then if it's fine, add it in every day for the week after that.
As we are all different, I would suggest that you check out the food lists for Phase II and decide what you would like to try and add in. Very often it is a case of trial and error ... some food items might be absolutely fine for you, but others might not. It's all a careful balancing act to find out what is best for you.

JMHO, but I would probably add in another fruit. If you want to add in starch, try some of the starchy veggies such as green peas or sweet potatoes! Be careful of serving sizes though and watch to see how your body responds. You don't want to start bringing on cravings if you're prone to them!

Come Monday I know I'm going to be scared to weigh. So far it's been positive results (lost 9lbs in phase 1) but I think that the bubble may soon burst.
I know it'll slow down but I'm afraid it'll reverse.

2 of 3,
I was also scared to move on, but I did just fine. I started with berries once a day/3-4 times a week, for a week. I still lost 2 lbs the first week. The next week, I ate the same way. I lost 1.5 lbs. I have tried different things, i.e. sweet potato, peas, whole grain bread, long-cooking oatmeal- for the last couple of weeks. I have not experienced any weight gain. I stayed the same for a week, but that was due to some indiscretions...
See what works for you, but I have still been losing with the add-ins.
I have to admit though, that I have been rather slow to add in new things!

Keira, that's awesome. That's exactly the way to go. Introduce things slowly and keep on losing. Weight loss is a slow process, so not being in a rush to throw in too many foods makes perfect sense.

Thanks, Iceman!
I believe moderation is the key. I have allowed myself a treat every so often, but only a few bites. I still don't eat rice, white potatoes or pasta. Last week, I had whole wheat pasta (1/2 cup) for the first time in over 2 months. To me, that is a rare food-although legal. I actually lost 5 lbs in the last week without really trying hard. I can't believe it!!!
I may "think" that I didn't try hard, because this WOE has started to become easier and natural for me. So, it's like it doesn't take a tremendous amount of effort. I hope it remains this way for me.

I still can't believe it. It has been a looooong time since I have seen the scale stop in the 170's. I kept getting off of the scale and getting back on. I thought there was some mistake. LOL
I am setting small 10 lb goals. My next is to see the scale stop at 170, then in the 160's. Attaining the small goals helps me from feeling overwhelmed by the ultimate goal.
Thanks to everyone for the support. I am so glad that I found you guys!

10 lbs at a time is good until onederland is in sight (or pick your next major milestone, maybe 150?) Then I always want to do a big sprint. Never works though hehehe - slow and steady is the way to go.

I did weigh-in and I down another lb. :yay:
I'm pleased with that when you consider that last week wasn't the best of weeks. It was my first week in phase 2 and I've heard that people sometimes stall at that point. I didn't go to the gym as much either.
I've also struggled to eat enough over the weekend (couldn't even hit 1000cals a day) as I've had the blues. :(
So this week I'll stay with the one fruit portion. Will probably have it in the afternoon now as I'm off work.
I've already been to the gym and I'm feeling well!

Weighed in this morning and I'm down another 2lbs. I'm pleased with that.
My big challenge will come later this week.
I'm going to a music festival and will be there for 5 or 6 days.
I've got to start working out my strategy to get through it without too many transgressions.
From past experience of this festival, there's normally a good variety of food there. But as you'd expect there'll be more than a usual amount of burger and chip type places.
I'm going to take nuts with me to snack on. I'm going to try my best to stay on path, perhaps allow myself one treat per day?
I need some tips.

Congrats on your loss, 2/3! It sounds like the festival will be a challenge, but I bet you'll get through it!
The nuts are a good idea, since they're portable and a good protein fix. You could also pack a small cooler with ice and LF cheese sticks, Canadian bacon (the already-cooked kind), celery sticks (and whatever other raw veggies you like to nosh on), hummus, LF mayo to mix with cans of tuna for tuna salad, etc. This will only work if you have continual access to your car, though.
About the one treat a day, you can do what you like, of course. You know how your body will react better than anyone else. If it was me, though, I probably wouldn't risk it, as it would probably be the beginning of a slide down into Carb Catastrophe...lol!
I love music, and events like that can be so wonderful! Have fun!!!

I won't have access to my car. I'll be camping the whole time.
I'll take the nuts. I'm also going to bake some flax muffins and take with me. I know there's a stall there that sells fruit.
I'm sure if I look around I can find things that are almost beachy.
Times in the past where I've told myself I'm allowed one treat, I haven't used it. I usually save it up to use as a last resort and then before I know it, the day is over and I haven't even had it.
So I'm hoping that of 5-6 days I maybe only actually have 2 treats.
The first day I'll use to walk around and sus' out what food options are available.
Just have to figure out which sins are worst than others.

I've made it back from my festival. I was quite careful about what I ate. I didn't eat anything that wasn't SB allowed except for on the Sunday when I allowed myself to have a little 'treat' from a Caribbean food stall.
The thing is most things are fried or cooked in fat so I probably consumed far more saturated fat that I would normally. I survived on various types of wraps - where they'd but some kind of protein/meat with salad in a tortilla. I'd eat the insides and bin the actual wrap. Also I remember the first meal I had their was a bowl of chilli and it probably had more than one serving's worth of beans in it. I also had falafels once but they were fried and not baked like the ones I make.
I was having 2 fruit portions a day. And the flax meal muffins I took with me really made a bg difference. Had one as a snack every day.
Anyway. I'm home again and so can get back on track. I still managed to lose 1.5lbs for the week. So I'm pleased as punch.
Bought some sweetpotatoes, so this week I'm going to add a starch on some days. That puts me on 2 fruits and a starch.

I'm still working on those photos, judy. ;)
I've had my weigh-in and am down another lb. Not my usual 2lbs but still it's moving in the right direction.
I've noticed that my protein intake has dropped because I'm fuller. I used to eat the whole fish when I roasted a bream but now I can only eat half of it. I think it's because I'm having sweet potato and butternut squash with it, so that makes it more filling. Similarly, I can only eat one fillet each meal now.
Is this normal? Carbs increase; protein decreases.
Anyroad, the plan for this week is to add another portion of starchy veg. So I'd be on 2 fruits and 2 starches. If I continue to lose, then I might stay on that level for a few weeks.
