Hi, I am newly diagnosed with pre-diabetes. My A1C was 7.2 so it is pretty early. If I eat a high carb meal my BG goes from about 85 up to 170 and then comes down very quickly, even to hypo level, sometimes in an hour. The endocrinologist says this is normal because my BG is under 140 after 2 hours, and often after an hour. My understanding of Dr. Bernstein's work is that normal people don't have these swings. With a low carb diet I reduced my A1C to 5.6 so it must be better. I read somewhere that normal blood sugar is 100 after an hour. Does that mean it's OK to spike before that as long as it comes back down, or is the goal to avoid spikes at all. My fasting BG is quite low so that going up to 140 from 80 and then swinging back can feel terrible.
Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Hello,
Start at this url http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/
Then explore Jenny's place at great length.
You will find plenty of good information.
You avoid big swings in BG by doing the 6-12-12 carbohydrate program that Dr. Bernstein recommends.
Do you have his book? Take a look at this url http://www.diabetes-book.com/
Best wishes.
BG does spike in the first hour or so. Up at Jenny's place you will see many graphs. One of them is how BG operates in a normal person without diabetes.
Welcome.
Ralph
