I desperately need immediate help. I'm Diabetic with high blood pressure for at LEAST 5 years [but I know much longer undiagnosed, and have been on ONLY diet to get it down, no meds yet] and went down to only 1 or 1 & 1/2 packs a day [on my BEST days, when NOT getting upset or having a crisis]......

I'm in between doctors and can't get to my new one yet, but MUST stop smoking or will lose my 55 year old family co-op [already given a date to vacate.... if you've seen my other post] , and I'm too sick and exhausted to move AND with no place else to go and only saying I've STOPPED smoking will give me at least a CHANCE of reconsideration and even THAT is only a ''maybe'' I cannot LIE to them.....

I've cut down to half and that didn't help. Neighbors are still complaining although none of them who are directly 'around' my apartment, others are although this IS NOT a smoke-free building.....

The building's lawyers who sent me this notice a 2nd and FINAL time nevertheless seem confident because it is classified as objectionable ""ODORS"".... I've TRIED to stop and CAN'T, not even after having read Allen Carr's book, and scared to death of taking patch, or any other smoking remedies because of my Diabetes and Hypertension.....

[If anyone is also familar with our RIGHTS in NON smoke-free buildings, co-ops etc., that would help as well, my family HAS smoked here for 55 YEARS and not a single word was said till only a YEAR ago, and with NOBODY ever saying they smelled smoke even up to a YEAR ago!! long story]......

I need to hear if Diabetics and/or those with also Hypertension [I have BOTH] are taking any of those remedies and if it's SAFE. Please HELP, I must do something IMMEDIATELY to change this situation or I'll be in the street .....or worse. Thanks so much.

I think you need an attorney. New York also has a division for tenants' rights. But act fast, like tomorrow.

I wouldn't come to a discussion board to ask if I need an ATTORNEY, the answer to that is quite obvious. This was a medical question. I am asking if ANY DIABETICS ARE ON ORAL or other REMEDIES and how they are DOING on them and if their Doctors said they are safe for us and are allowed to take them The rest was only BACKGROUND on why I may have to RESORT to these aids immediately to be able to SAY I've quit, before I HAVE to deal with attorneys. If I can SAY I've stopped immediately and am on something to stop...... I may be able to AVOID attorneys but don't want those aids to destroy my health even worse being a Diabetic with hypertension. I repeat, this was a MEDICAL question [and only added if anyone has an apartment and has any knowledge of our RIGHTS for a non smoke-free building, who might also have experienced this same legal problem]. I can't believe there are NO diabetics around who haven't had any experience with stopping smoking in the whole week that I've been throwing this question out on many discussion sites. This is AMAZING to me that there are NO diabetics who smoke or are trying to quit. I can't be the only one in the WORLD with this disease who's trying to quit. [and this is a CO-OP which is not normal ''tenants rights'' so that makes it even more complicated. We're not customary 'tenants', my family OWNED our apartment for 55 YEARS, where I grew up and returned after their death 6 years ago and NOBODY complained about smoke before..... which makes this even more preposterous]. But i want to know if any DIABETICS found taking quit smoking aids...... dangerous or detrimental to their health. I'm in between doctors and have no one to ask, and can't get to one yet who's ever examined me but at least want to know what doctors are telling OTHER diabetics about taking these remedies in general......if diabetics are ALLOWED to take these things or not.

I would suggest you get on Google and type in "diabetes nicotine patch", or something along those lines, you should get quite a bit of information.

Mamzelle, I am a diabetic who quit smoking (multiple times, actually). My doctor gave me the go-ahead for every quit method I wanted to try, and I tried them all; patch, gum, inhaler, welbutrin...all of them. I also had high BP at the time. If you think about it, it's almost a little silly to worry about using a nicotine replacement; it can't be any worse for your current medical conditions than the cigarettes you currently smoke. ;)
I was successful at quitting but quit cold turkey the last time and that was the quit that stuck; I'm 19 months nicotine free in a few weeks. :)
It seems to me that you have a high degree of external motivation to quit (ie consequences that you don't care for if you are not successful), but what about your internal motivation? If the only reason you are quitting is because you are being forced to quit because you don't like what will happen if you don't (loss of home), then that may not be enough to keep you quit because you will still have the idea/resentment in your mind that you are being forced to give up something that you enjoy and very few people are successful and giving up something they think they still want over the long haul.
