Recently a friend of mine who is looking to drop some pounds has decided to give the Atkins diet a try. I am taking this opportunity to research the diet's pros and cons. As well, I will follow my friend's progress throughout her diet and update this particular blog at the start of each month.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Atkins diet, adapted by Dr. Robert Atkins in the early 70's, it is an all-meat and extremely low-carb diet that emphasizes avoiding refined carbohydrates such as sugar and flour. Of course, exercise and nutritional supplements are needed to accompany the diet.

I have skepticism for this type of weight loss, because I think that carbs are a crucial part of any diet for a number of reasons; however, as far as weight loss goes Atkins tends to have a wealth of success -- especially for women noted in this study (http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/2007/1865091.htm).

For more information on the diet click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atkin%27s_diet).

This, I will point out, is a link to an article written elsewhere, clearly by someone who hasn't got a clue, but isn't going to let that stop hier from spouting off. I can understand that. I do it all the time. But, on the other hand, I find it a fast way to learn. I prefer to do it in contexts where I know people who *do* know will jump in quickly and disabuse me.

When someone spouts nonsense with an air of authority, it really invites comment, far more reliably than some diffuse and vague ignorance!

[this actual post is a blog or something like that and it actually seems open-minded, a solicitation of real response. This woman might actually welcome correction. No comments so far.]

So, folks, I don't have time. If the link is to a site which allows public participation, it would be useful if some people who actually know something about low-carb diets would go there and write about it. It's helpful, of course, to be polite and cautious about language. Even if it seems that someone is a total idiot. And you can be sure that on some sites, you will be inundated by idiots who have their minds made up and please, do not confuse them with facts.

Still, there will be readers who will respond, even if silently, to cogent and clear argument and patiently presented facts.

Good luck.

I responded, but not very politely. It had an "Are you stupid?" undertone.

"How on Earth could you link to information about Atkins when you quite obviously didn't read it?

Atkins is not all meat or carb-free, as Rosensmith explained. Vegetables are a vital part of even the most strict phase. In fact, many Atkins-followers will tell you they eat more vegetables on Atkins than ever before.

You can't follow Atkins if you know nothing about it. Read the book, and please educate yourself before you irresponsibly spread incorrect information."
