I saw a comment in another thread where Lisa said the stress of getting a blood sample (when your finger is not being cooperative!) might elevate your blood glucose reading. Was that a joke or not? Can little everyday stresses elevate BG? And what are people's experiences generally of stress affecting BG?
Thanks, Paul.

Paul,
IMHO and based on what I have read so far, stress is a major contributing factors in BGs control in diabetics and can contribute to become one if the it is daily stress in suseptable individuals. Stress causes body to release adrenalin, followed by cortisol, which inhibits action of insulin. My BGs always spike when I am stressed out.

Poking your finger secrete's adrenalin as does the stress of sneezing, coughing, etc – all can give you a slightly higher reading's.
I never had a problem with blood pricking because my supplements keep my blood flowing. I usually have more blood then needed for my glucose strip. Others with poor blood circulation issues can put stress on the finger in order to produce enough blood for a normal reading.
I read that when testing your FBS you shouldn't even drink a glass of water before because it stimulates the body and may set off a slightly elevated reading. I also read on another forum *may be too graphic for some* that someone said they wait 20 minutes after their morning bowel movement so the body has time to relax again before they take testing their FBS.
BTW: There is a new (affordable) testing device due out next year that is laser censored (no pricking involved). It's only about 90% accurate but hopefully improvements will change that.

I am one whose blood sugar readings are definitely higher under stressful conditions.
Now I never thought about the stressors may be involved as far as cough or sneezing while checking it or such- I guess I don't consider that stress- altho I know talking while I am getting my blood pressure done, makes it higher...
I was undergoing extreme stress- knowing my son was going to be dying soon, and nothing I could do about it, and some problems with some jerk doctors, and agencies- and my bs levels were over 200 in the mornings... just got A1c done- and down 4 points since last time I had it checked... so must be doing something right!
