Try on olive bar (Whole Foods, some other chain groceries)--there's quite a variety out there, far beyond the sad bloodshot green eyeballs in jars. I quite like Greek olives. The good thing I've found about changing the way I eat is finding new things to like to eat--
Cheers--
Terry-24 (still a newbie, and hope it's okay to post to your journal uninvited--)
Hey Terry. Thanks for the tip on olives...I'll check it out.
Stop by my journal any time. Looks like you had a pretty good workout. I'm trying to figure out what to do myself. I was at the gym today and got freaked by the weights so I just stuck to cardio.
Peace.

25 May 2007 PT appt: 55 min, mostly questions and notes
work on pausing at bottom of squat
swap in BOSU ball ankle work instead of seated calf raise to work major calf muscles and stabilizers
lower wt to work on form for triceps cable pushdowns: start at 12.5#
training for 5k (04-Jul): need to run 3.2mi 4x/wk: goal is under 35min total
Results from 04-May Lange caliper measurements:
(3 trial average): triceps 21.9 ; suprailiac 21.8 ; quadraceps 24.2
b.f.% = 27.7 wt 152.8 ; lbs fat = 42.3 ; lbs lean = 110.5
I'm trying to figure out a rational (i.e., less-wishful) goal weight, so looking at various "healthy weight" ranges for my height:
BMI = 18.5 to 24.9 => 106 to 143 lbs (avg 124.5) ; American Council on Exercise uses b.f.%: Fitness level = 21-24% => avg 22.5%
based on exrx.net target wt/body comp: lose 8 lbs lean mass; at 22.5%b.f => wt.132 ; lbs fat=30 ; lbs lean = 102
It's not realistic to expect I can get to 124.5 wt: it would require b.f.% at 21 and losing 12 lbs lean mass, some of that much-needed muscle. So resetting my goal/stat to 132. Tick, tick, tick

Terry...
I am the type of person that I dont eat much before a race. Specially a 3.something mile one. I do drink a protein shake the morning of the race (eas shake) and it gives me the energy along w/o filling me up..of course I do lots of water as well..Running the half I should of done a carb up better. I paid dearly for it..There is a half marathon in Durango, CO close to us that sounds so good..But duh? what am I thinking..I am still healing from the foot/sciatica nerve problem..Its a drug..Its so addicting..
Do get some running in outside and maybe if you are treadmilling get some inclines in..If you know the course thats better if there are any hills etc. Your adreline alone will keep you going. Wear appropiate clothing along with good shoes..You learn from race to race what to expect etc..
Happy Memorial to ya

Good Morning..
As you've done the longer distances, any advice about runner's toe?
Have never heard of runners toe..Improper shoe fittings? I do wear a gel insert in mine..I have noticed over time that my middle toe on my right foot the nail has gotten thicker..I really think that is the friction of running..Sometime cramping but that could be caused by dehydration.
My feet usually dont give out on me..I so have to watch my back tho..

Hey there..
Question???
jog: 3.2mi over 32:18min ~ 10-11mi/min, 0.5 incline What is your speed on the mile..I know that I can run an 11 min mile going 5.4 mph...Course every treadmill is different. to get a good 10 min mile in or less..at least 6.0 mph..
U are doing well in the training..The inclines will so help you if your course has hills..I learned the hard way on that..U should be able to breath freely and not huff/puff if you are breathing to hard..u are going to fast..Have learned from ppl and my experience thru this. I have a good friend who runs and she breathes thru her nose and out her mouth..But, for the life of me I can't..its mouth breathing..specially outside running..I am aware of this on the treadmill..

Terry..
Thanks for responding. I was gonna mention about the sprints/run slow intervals..That is great to get her stamina built up. I did more of that when doing the half-marathon. Shoot with the 5K you could run say 3 times a week. Just dont run less then your 3.2 mile race. To be honest..I actually didn't train for the 5K..I just went out and did it..Now for the 10K I did train so to speak..I took the already 3 miles and gradually added more in a certain time period. I found out the hard way that my longest run when training for the half was 10miles..So u can imagine my body starting rebelling after I hit the 11 mile marker. Right now I am doing maybe 4 miles at the most..I am really trying hard to be easy on the foot/back.
One thing I do recommend is to run more outside..Then you will be more prepared for the race then from using a treadmill..

Terry..
Naw, I was like that when I did my first race..But let me tell you, once you have done one, you get the BUG!! but you are right..to use this as a "training" tool to get out of your stall reaping the rewards to the end. If its a race to get you motivated, then by all means go for it..I understand..
Have a great Thursday..I actually didn't do exercise today..not sure but dont feel that well..tummy is kind of icky along with sinus/allergies..even was dressed to go, but backed out..dd is officially out of school so decided to stay home today to semi-celebrate..Will get back to it tomorrow..

What a mind game this is, and how totally mindless I was today, sleep-walking through "cardio" and lifting.
"cardio" consisted of walking 39min over 2.52mi ~ 3.5mph, then 13min on the elliptical for 0.65mi at level 18, all while watching "The Daily Show" and "Colbert Report." Not exactly focused on target heart rate.

28 June 2007 -- Training heck--1502:113.9.77.90
Bummed by time trial yesterday and feeling I'm getting worse not better as race-day approaches. That 31:01 time must have been a total fluke, as I've not gotten close to it since.
Light warm-up for lower-body, with Swiss ball crunches (60), LF leg press (95#12, 102.5#10, 115#8, 122.5#6, 95#12), LF leg curls (45#12, 60#12), LF abductor/adductors (60#12 each).
Strong walk 0.76mi over 13min 3.2>3.6mph, but molasses run: 3.53mi over 40:49 HR: 151 Avg; 172 max +2min=145; +5min=134 time trial: 3.2mi over 35:48.3
Speeds between 5.2 and 5.6 mph, with final kick only 6mph.
Steady uphill walk for cool-down: 0.67 over 13:00 at 3.0 incline: 5 to 8.5
Really hard to get it going today, physically and mentally. I think I was overly ambitious yesterday and disappointed with that run leading to lighter effort today and leaden legs. Ugh! What are the goals here? 5K next Wednesday, so three more training runs. Race goals:
show up (7 am!)
finish
finish under 35min
dream only: finish under 32
Already looking past race to change up my workouts, planning to return to cardio cross-training, alternating days of 50min jogs with 50min elliptical work, while continuing BFL weight-training program through 01-Aug. Schedule up pt appointments, beginning again in August, with b.f.% and fitness assessment.

Thanks, Terry!
You have a 5k race coming up soon, too, did I get that right? Wednesday? Good luck, I'll be rooting for you!
I've been reading your gym journal a bit - you do some awesome workouts! I'm impressed, I do weights too, but not as regularly as I should, usually two full body workouts a week, I try for 3 but rarely make it.

Welcome to Bodyweight-Wednesday: inspired by Alwyn Cosgrove's "Your Body is a Barbell" article (http://www.alwyncosgrove.com/bodyisabarbell.html), I did sets of 12 reps for both lower and upper body work today, trying to "earn the right to lift." Hardest was the inverted row, which I could only manage 3 sets of 6. Took 44min ot work thru 10 major exercises, plus warm-up.

Broke tempo after first ½ mile, dropping back from 6.2mph to 5.8mph for ¼ mile, before returning to 6.2 tempo for remainder: tired after lbwo, or just not properly psyched for tempo run today? Tempo work on endurance and pacing demands a different mental place from that of sprints, obviously.

Wow, 115lb squats. I'm impressed. I had worked my way up to about 100lbs, but that's it, and then I backed off when I was doing the low-cal dieting and felt I was a little weaker than usual.
When I'm ready to get back into the weights seriously, I think I'll come here for ideas!

I tried a "grade run" today, to get treadmill practice for the gradual incline that the October race begins with. I'll try to jog the race course tomorrow morning. I think the first mile and more is all up. I want a good pace while steadily climbing over that distance, but it was hard practice today: the first 1.5mi at just 1.0 incline pushed my heart rate into the mid-160's, even though my pace was 10:21. I'd like to be able to run the hill better, but I don't want to exhaust myself on the first mile. How to do this properly? Practice jogging on the course, woman.

No workout yesterday at all :( .
Today lbwo and an "easy run" day, using the program "5K sports training" on the treadmill with a steady speed and varying inclines (from 0 to 4.3 incl level). I used not-so-"steady" speeds of 5.2mph for the first 20min, 5.4 and 5.6 for 10min, and 6.0mph for 5min wrap. Not so easy today, but I do need to use this program more and get my speeds better.

17 August 2007 2001:251.10.82.83 .
This morning I toted up my running stats, and I’m glad to see there’s some progress in average pace (and total miles):
May: 11:13 (29.77mi)
Jun: 10:73 (46.66 mi)
Jul: 10.42 (71.49mi)
Aug to date: 10:28 (41.48mi)
Since I really only started the Smartcoach (adapted) 5K program schedule the first week of August, I’m hoping to see even better numbers over the next nine weeks. Maybe cutting a full ½ minute off training time? That would be nice. But remembering that my rate of improvement is diminishing, I can’t get too hopeful. Just be glad to see any improvement.

I did a 5k run tonight, thought I was going really fast, thought I might even be doing as well as I would in a race, or at least close. Got home and found out my time was a good 3 minutes slower than my last race time.
And of course, I thought of you. I really, really do think that the race day adrenaline must be very powerful. It must be. I'm not that much slower than I was a month ago. I hope.

Not a comfortable pace at all, so I'm not a little surprised the recovery rates are bad. I tried to "kick" the final 100 yards, but still think the +5min recovery should be better. I was glad for every bit of shade and pretty pleased with the time generally, but don't want a heart attack. How do distance people do it????

I’m changing my recovery heart-rate monitoring from +2min and +5min to +1 and +2, having looked at research that use those recovery intervals as the better indicators of fitness. In fact, the +5min reading is calculated to 110% of pre-workout RHR.
Looking at the last 2 weeks of my run data, both my park runs had significantly weaker recoveries than my treadmill workouts. My 14-day average +2min recovery on the treadmill is 48 bmp. My 1st park run was 28 bmp; my 2nd 34 bmp. Ideally at 2min it should be 50 bmp, and at 1min 25 bmp.
I find calculating my max heart rate problematic; even the Tanaka formula yields 176maxHR, and I routinely have readings in the 180’s. When I crossed the Coronado finish line, my monitor read 200 bpm. So I’m guesstimating for training purposes that my HRmax is 190 bmp. HR’s really a moving target, but should be moving lower: the goal is to get better stroke volume from each heart beat, not more heartbeats per minute. So I need to pay better attention to this, particularly with speedwork sprints. I want to get the 30sec sprints at 9.0mph under HR 180. And really focus on recovery during cross-training on the elliptical, keeping HR around 65% of 190 (124bmp).
So measure HRR at +1min and +2min, w/ drop in speed from slow jog to walk (2mph); 5min read at full stop. Active recovery as well, with biofeedback cueing.
I also need to perform a VO2max test on stationary bicycle as well, to get a baseline reading. When was my last pt assessment? I really want to wait for some weight loss before scheduling a new assessment. It would help HRR as well. And race speed. And… And... Five damn pounds-------

I'm babying my quads this morning, having over-stretched a bit in the back squat last night. I don't usually lift at night, so probably tired and lacking proper concentration. Not injured and no major DOMS today, just "awareness." So I did work to keep HR 65% of max on the elliptical and did cool-down walking on the treadmill. Very, very light day; very, very hot day.

I need to keep my heart rate lower on easy day runs. NYRRC(1) formula for HRmax (226 – age + 10 pts for fitness) is close to my guesstimate of 190bmp, so 90% effort should be around 170; easy day 70%, about 135. The fartlek intervals pushed max today to 164, but running slower feels so heavy now and dull. Nonsensical, but – Still, I’m actually trying to not overtrain, though I would like to get a few more miles in this week.

Running Times, "Ask the Coaches: Heart Rate - 5K Training" gives THR ranges:
Easy, recovery days are at 60-70%.
Long runs are 60-75%.
Steady state runs are 75-80%.
Tempo or threshold runs are 80-85%.
Speed work intervals are 90-95%.
I'm still running too hard at the wrap, but average HR was in range. I've adjusted my HRmax up to the read at Coronado race finish line. Using the Karvonen formula (THR = MHR - RHR x % effort + RHR), THR = 195 - 61 x 60-75% + 61 = range of 141 - 162. I need to resist the urge to kick the wrap during training long runs and tempo runs, and so get HR to drop more over +1 to +5 cooldown.

Park run (7:12 start, cooler and pleasantly overcast), October 5K course:
time trial: 3.1mi in 29:07.0; split 15:18 (9:38 pace)
HR: 171 Avg; 185 Max; +1min=141 +2min=129
Fast start (hydrant hit at 4:13, grass at 6:39), so I expected to exhaust early, but I managed a few sprint bursts and a very brief final kick. Weather had most to do with good time: so much better to run in comfortable temp and light than early hot sun. So very pleased with time and gratified that my slightly more organized training may be paying off. The recovery times are better as well, but I didn't get a proper read at +5min and forgot early RHR; pre-run was 73.
Now if I could be as organized with my eating, I might get these five pounds off.

I've got to stop coming over here. You are depressing me with how fast you are running and how much you are lifting. I'm getting a serious case of fitness envy happening. ;)
Great tempo run, you are going to fly in that race!

Tough run and without 30-second sprints. I can't see myself ever getting to the 6x800m at 4:27pace (13.5mph) w/ 400m jogs that the Smartcoach program includes in this training. That's a huge drop from my 6:40 (9.0mph) 800m sprints! And with only 400m recovery??

Hi Terry,
About your questions on the BB SLDLs, I do use lifting gloves, but it's still hard. The BB is easier for me than the DBs, I can't hold 2 - 45lb DBs, but I can hold a 130lb BB, go figure. I changed my grip (a tip someone gave you actually) to use my stronger hand underhand and my weaker one overhand, that's helped a bit. I went and bought some of those grip strengtheners a while ago, the ones you squeeze in your hand. I don't use them often, but sometimes if I think about it. I think that might have helped a bit. I find a thicker BB helps too. The one I was using yesterday was a smaller BB, a 20lb one, loaded with extra weight. I find the 45lb bars easier to grip. And I have bought straps, I just haven't tried them yet, but I'm reaching my max weight lifting DLs without them though, I think. I'll have to try them next time.

Fast up incline to hydrant (4:05), but slowed to grass (7:04) and lost three minutes to split; another 30 sec slower on return. Still, didn't stop to walk, though felt like it several times. I think the distance is perfect for me right now. I'm sure I'd have walked some portion if I'd tried even 4 miles today.

Hard run, but good: definitely wanted to slow down from 7.0mph tempo, but the two-mile stretch was just the right distance, psychologically. I'm really trying to push myself to start at 6.0 mph instead of my usual slow and easy 5.4 - 5.6: physically I'm able, but mentally often reluctant; it "seems" fast. Get used to it, woman.

Speedwork: a hard run, with a slow start (5.6 - 5.8mph over the first ¼ mi, then 6.0mph as base) and a stitch in the left side for the first mile (heavy from bagel breakfast?? So much for that as carb-load, idiot). And there's no way I will get to the 4:36 pace sprints of the Smartcoach training program: my two sprints at 6:00 pace were so hard on my legs, pounding my knees. I think I'd need real coaching, not virtual, to work to that speed-sprinting.

Lake Miramar reservoir in Scripps Ranch. Overcast and warm already (8:30 start); crowd mostly cyclists. Icky-hard incline at start, climbing for 12 minutes. Split at 17:00; so how come return didn't benefit from downhill speed? Ugh. This was a first time on this path in North County. The trail was not distance-marked at all, but as my pace felt quick, I'm estimating a 3.2 mile distance. Still icky: not a satisfying run, just a slog. Speedwork is so much more rewarding: immediate gratification. But I really need to train more hills like this, even though my run-times are not great.

I'll do foothills again next Friday instead of trying to move on the rolling hills run (which includes a ½ mi interval at 8%). I know I'm not ready to tackle that yet, and I want to see if I can bring my HR down a bit before leaving "hill beginner" work.
