This is being discussed in the media watch forum but very interesting if anyone here missed it because the numbers are frankly amazing

I wonder if the abstinence from alcohol is significant. Dr Bernstein's book does not treat alcohol as a particularly high-profile factor, although he advices moderation. Does anyone here have opinions on effects of alcohol on blood sugar, and if there are differences between wine and beer in effect on BG?

I drink either a beer or a glass of wine every day with my meals. Alcohol I believe helps lower BG. There's a lot of positive research on moderate alcohol consumption.

I did some partyi.. er, networking a couple of nights ago. Actually it was a guild banquet. I ate sanely, but had 2 beers, 3 glasses of wine. My post meal glucose was 81, and the next morning it was 88, which are pretty low readings for me. Generally I don't drink. The next evening, my readings were back to my version of normal. So the effect of 5 drinks lasted 24 hours or less.

So there is an effect, but I am wondering if it is worth it since alcohol is empty calories.

Ah but what wonderful empty calories. They sooth the inner being at times !!

:D

Dr. B and all the establishment recommend one drink some say two in an evening such as red wine. I don't think they meant 4 fingers of scotch.

I believe alcohol is processed as a form of sugar, but it does not require lots of insulin. Also, since alcohol is toxic substance (too bad because I like wine), liver will try to process it first, so it sort of inhibits carbs processing. The bad thing- watch yuu booze carefully if you are on med or on VLC diet, you can get hypo. Especially, it concerns those in insulin.
Overall, a little bit of wine does not hurt, but too much booze will result in weight gain, may make neuropahty worse, and cause high Triglycerides.
I think it is better to watch booze intake for diabetics and even healthy ppl, we have only one liver aftr all.
I know some use alcohol to fight DP, but for me it is always a rebound effects, so I just drink sparingly.

Yes I like wine, so that's why I asked. Staying away from it for the moment to get some sense of what my BG is under a very clean diet, then I will try adding it back in. What is DP? :help: (Sorry I tried googling it but no luck, I have a feeling it's going to be some obvious term that is just refusing to come into my head!).

DP, Dawn Phenomena, I suspect you are up to date on that, now you know the abbreviation.

The reserch shows that wine & beer are rich in antioxidants or flavanoids. So I wouldn't say the calories are empty.
