Wow... how long have I been a member of this forum and I never really explored the gym log features of this site :lol:
I guess I've got some catching up to do... luckily I haven't been regularly exercising that long that I can still kick off a gym log :)

Brief synopsis of what's brought me here:

My father passed away from lung cancer on March 11th of this year, 2007. It was only a little over 4 months since he was diagnosed. He had been smoking his entire life.
Once he was diagnosed and started getting sick, he started reiterating to me how important one's health was...
I remember being in the hospital with my dad, before they brought him home on hospice care and he told me that there's a Chinese saying..
that your health is always #1... if you have family, put a 0 to the right of the 1 so you have 10... have wealth, add another zero...love, another zero...
and the higher your number is, the more fulfilling your life is...
but take away that #1.. and you have nothing... all you have are a bunch of 0's...
nothing matters if you don't have your health
and I just thought that was so profound and sad and true.. and it's one of the last things my dad ever said to me in his final days that I will never ever forget...

Shortly before my dad passed, DH and I invested in a real treadmill. I mean a refurbished top of the line commercial treadmill (what you would find in gyms across the country)... not a "home" treadmill..
Brand new, this thing retailed over $5K
We bought it refurbished (2005 model) for little less than half of that...
It was still a TON of money but we had gone through the WalMart special treadmills before and knew that wasn't what we wanted...
After my dad passed, I started really focusing on my health and using it..
So far, since having the treadmill hooked up (it required its own grounded cable, special outlet and dedicated line ran directly from the breaker box) I have used it almost every single day.

My goal is to some day look back on my gym log at the very first page and maintain my promise to be a better healthier me. Because my dad is right.. without your health, you have nothing.

Ditto!

Good parents are such a blessing. Sounds like both of us were very blessed since mine were wonderful also. Still are, just they live in Heaven now!

WOWOW
I got visitors!!
hello Emily and Cissie!! :)

Weight this morning was at a solid 159..
oddly enough, my weight seems to be higher in the morning than it does in the afternoons...
which is just WEIRD.. cause it's always been the opposite for me...

Anyways, I dont' know if I'll get on the treadmill tonite..
my left ankle has a blister from the shoes... and trying to walk tonite might exacerbate it..
which is really a shame cause I LOVE those new balance shoes :(

Anyways, took a long hot soak in some epsom salt last nite... my muscles are feeling a little achy for some reason...
so might take tonite off from walking just to give everything a day of rest.. :)

I really sorry to hear about the passing of your father. What he said is really powerful. Our health is so important. Sometimes we get caught up thinking that I'll lose these 50 pounds but what does it all mean if were not healthy. Back in 2004, I started panicking after I realized I had 2 weeks until my graduation and I had gain back 15 of the pounds I loss doing Atkins. I went from 160 and 145 in 10 days but I was sick as a dog. I was hardly eating, drinking 5 large cups of coffee each day and smoking cigarettes like a chimney. And since then, my dieting efforts have been just that--a panic, resulting in some unhealthy behavior just to lose weight...until now.

I am really concerned about getting healthy and maintaining it. This is the only body I'll have. So unless I discover the fountain of youth, I'd better start taking action today. I'm really glad you're doing the same.

Maybe you should take the night off...you'll be able to work harder once you heal. Just a thought :) but I'm stubborn, too...

I'm so sorry for your Dad's passing. It was two years ago today that my Dad's funeral was held. He also had lung cancer, as well as some others. He too talked of how important our health was. I was thinking of him this morning as I took my bike ride. The best thing you can do is take his advice and take care of your health. Smart men we both were priveleged to have in our lives!

Ann, I'll respond to you here since you don't have a journal...
but thank you for your post and kind words :)
I'm sorry to hear about your dad as well... lung cancer is SO vicious that it's just unbelievable...
My dad went from nearly symptomless to passing away in a matter of 4 months... the speed at which the cancer spread was crazy and out of control... he had JUST finished his 3 month session of chemo 2 weeks before he passed away and we all thought (including the oncologist) that it was working and that the cancer was in remission... he was walking, talking, had visitors... had friends over... cooking for us... and next day, he was paralyzed..
In the end, the cancer had spread to his spine and paralyzed him from the waist down... and within 2 weeks after that, he passed away..

I think about him often too and it hits me at the oddest times...
I'll see something or hear something that reminds me of him and it just hits like a brick wall...

Anyways, thank you for your visit :)

Ann, I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. Pookie, thank you for sharing also. This makes me think about my dad. I'm not real close with him but I love him dearly. We are much alike--addictive personalities and such. I would never admit to that before. I have tried to reach out to him regarding his smoking. I made a pact with him to quit and we could do it together. That was months ago. I did manage to quit and he didn't. It really worries me because my mom passed away from an agressive cancer. It's really frustrating when you can't help the ones you love.

Anywho, just some passing thoughts.

Pookie, good luck with party tonight.

p.s. You will go below 160..and stay there. That's a promise :)

I'll just be sitting here and all of the sudden it will feel like jello and just tingle...
not sure if I'm not getting enough vitamins or what?? :confused:
also, noticed the past couple of nites when I try to run, it feels a little weird...
like my legs are just dragging...
dunno what's up with that...
on the bright side... I was able to run 1/2 mile last nite straight without stopping...
:)

I’m not sure about the jello/tingling feeling. I know that when I push myself to hard I need a day to recuperate. Congrats on running for a whole .5 mile! I’ve been increasing my jogging time/distance each week, too. When I first started I could even jog for a 1 minute. Now I’m up to 11 minutes (1 mile). I want to be able to do a 10 min mile in the next few weeks. Anyhow, good job…keep up the good work.

Brenda, you can do it. I was up to a pack and half earlier this year. I feel so much better now. No more coughing/hacking and waking up every morning feeling sick. I remember the first day I tried speed walking on the treadmill and starting huffing and puffing. I was like "no way." I really want to lose this weight more than I want to smoke. The whole process has been though but the choice was clear.

going to go to a place called Runner's Market on Saturday
apparently they do a free evaluation of your feet... look at how you walk and run... measure your feet and depending on your walking/running style, determine the best shoes for you
it was recommended by the girl who runs the company gym...
and since my New Balance shoes are WACK, i need new ones (the back of the left shoe has clumped up so it's one hard knot that's causing blisters)... and DH doesn't have good shoes..
so hopefully we'll be able to find shoes that will be appropriate..
DH says the balls of his heels hurt when he gets on the treadmill...

went to inlaws for dinner last nite and man I just can not eat as much as I used to...
i only had about 7 oz of steak, green bean casserole, and about 2 cups of broccoli and cauliflower... but man I was so full afterwards that my sides started hurting again (side stitches?? is that what they're called?)
we walked back home (inlaws only live 3 houses down from us :lol: ) and my side was just cramping and hurting so bad...
of course I got home and walked 1.92 miles on the treadmill anyways :lol:
my side hurt the entire time... but felt a little more worked out by the end of my walk...

of course my scale today is up to a 160/161 :rolleyes:
i hate that thing! :mad:

got on the treadmill tonite even tho i wasn't really in the mood to...
started out walking but tried increasing speed to a slow job of about 4.5mph...
well that just made my shins hurt really really bad..
so i thought, well great... here i am starting out and i'm getting shin splints already...
so slowed down to a walk..
next time on run, increased speed to 5.2...
well that made my shins hurt a little less...
slowed back down to a walk
and THEN i decided to see what would happen if I REALLY jacked the speed up so i increased it to 6.2...
well, wouldn't you believe it, my shins didn't hurt at all..
in fact, none of my body parts were hurting...
so finished the rest of the exercise with running speed of 6.2mph...
and even increased it to 6.5 at one point but i think that was too fast for me..
so it seems that somehow, the faster I run, the less my body hurts..??
not sure how that works but hey, I'll take it :lol:

I noticed that too. The smaller you are the less you burn. It makes sense but it's just not right.:p Then, as you become fitter (even at the same weight) you naturally burn less calories for the same activities. The body is a funny thing.

Anyhow, congrats on another 4 miles.

4.3 miles tonite...
411 calories burned...
I took Mike's advice to heart and decided to see why i DID feel obligated to stop after 0.2-0.4 miles... well, the more I went, I realized that I didn't really have a good reason to stop other than psyching myself up to just go that little bit more... so I stopped looking at the distance and focused on the time... and told myself I was going to run for 7 minutes and try to figure out what exactly was hurting and making me stop... well, by the 7th minute, I realized that I really didn't have that good of a reason and I was fine to keep going...
Ended it with a 5 minute run/jog and I was perfectly fine... but as I was getting to the close of my goal (of a specific time or distance) it got harder and harder and I found myself staring at the countdown to see how much longer I had...
Which in all my ramblings, I think is just telling me that my limited running ability might be mostly mental instead of physical...

well took a 4 day break from running with the long memorial day weekend..
I needed it too, after the hard run I had last Thursday...
of course eating was totally off plan and with the combination of no running, I'm afraid to see what the scale's at...
Won't get on there until later on in the week and hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised...
Will hit the treadmill running tonite when I get home :)

well last nite's run was just awful..
I kept getting interrupted because some idiot kept calling me on the oncall phone
not sure where I was at when I stopped for the first time but I THINK it was around 1.2 miles... if not more
went to pick up the phone and the user hung up right as I walked into the computerroom to VPN into my work pc...
so I got back on the treadmill and of course the stupid thing had reset
so I ran for exactly 0.2 miles before the phone ran AGAIN and it was the same moron calling back
so this time, he stays on the line while I go to the computer room, VPN in and fix his problem...
so I get back on the treadmill, which had of course reset AGAIN, and go 2.6 miles more..
which if I was right on the first stretch I went should put me right at 4

Wow... last nite's run was AWESOME...
I was sooooo incredibly tired when I got home that I literally just face-planted on the couch and passed out for about 30 mins or so..
Well I finally dragged my butt off the couch and got ready to run..
It was a great run... no pains and I was able to go further than I've gone before..
started out with a 0.6 mile run right off the bat without stopping..
I got in 3.92 miles before my oncall phone rang and I had to stop...
I was so sweaty it was insane... my ears were sweating :lol:
I'm exhausted today.. so since I've hit the quota that I wanted for the month, I think I'm just going to rest after work instead of going again...

had half a day at work today since I was on call all week..
so came home and laid outside for about an hour... picked up around the house because I thought the housekeeper was coming over...
then hopped on the treadmill for 4 miles..
it was a great run... average HR was 145..
for every mile, I started out walking from 0-0.1
ran from 0.1-0.3
walked 0.3-0.4
ran 0.4-0.6
walked 0.6-0.7
and ran 0.7-1
and I continued doing that for all 4 miles..
really got my HR up and kept it up...
calories burned was 396, which really wasnt bad considering I put my weight in at 155 (the calories burned really plummets as my weight drops)

Anyways, today begins a new chart for June...
Hoping to maintain May's records..

man... no running lately
eating has been AWFUL and weight's barely fluctuating around 156...
not good
I know it's only a pound or two more than my low but that couple of pounds were a real bitch and struggle to lose so I'm obsessing over it..
I know if I keep this up too long, not only will I stop losing but I'll gain some of it back...
gotta get back in the grind..
had a good amount of sleep last nite and feel quite rested today..
so plan to hit the treadmill running tonite if all goes well

felt like it'd been so long since I ran that I didn't know how to get in my groove..
eventually I did tho... but usually my runs after a long break are AWESOME..
tonite it was ok, but not AWESOME... iffen ya know what I mean...
Anyways, put in 4 miles..
389 calories burned..
weight's creeping up to around 157...

Wow... my left hip hurts so bad today that I can't walk on it...
I'm just kinda hobbling along...
Went 4 miles last nite and felt fine while I was running... but the pain and ache instantly hit as soon as I got off the thing...

I think instead of trying to hit a certain mileage for the month... my goal for this month is to try to run/jog for 1 mile straight without stopping...
that is HUGE for me... because my running/jogging endurance isn't very high at all... and I have to have a REALLY good day before I can run even half a mile nonstop...

Well, regardless... I may take a little bit off or just take it easy
not going to work too hard in trying to get my miles in because that's not my monthly goal...

Went hiking on Sunday so I'm going to count the exercise in that since it was a real workout...
Mom estimates that we trekked 4-5 miles... so I'm going to put down 4.5 miles for it...
plus 4 miles yesterday :)

Well I ran for the first time tonite in a mandatory self-imposed week off
It wasn't bad... we'll see how my hips do tomorrow tho..
I'm doing something that one of the running books recommended
Gonna run for 10 minutes straight 3 times a week and 15 minutes for ONE time a week...

Ran a straight 10 minutes for the first time tonite and ya know, it wasn't bad at all..
in fact I think the week off made me better...because my HR only went up to 161
I could have ran more afterwards but I stuck to my rules and walked the rest of the time...
did it at 3% and 4% incline tho... to keep my HR up
for some reason, inclines really really increases my calories burned

3 miles ran, 327 calories burned...

Met my June goal last nite of running 1 mile nonstop...
:cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
It was awesome!
I've been stickign to my rule..
10 minute run... twice a week
15 minute run... once a week..
I had planned on just running 10 minutes last nite but then realized that I only had 0.2 miles to go for my mile and I was feeling just fine.. so I kept going..
It was an amazing feeling actually...
Forced myself to run and lightly jog the rest of the time..
My hips are feelign a lot better.. no pain or weaknesses at all..
so I'm happy with that..
I'm not putting in as many miles as I did for May.. but I know I'm not running toward a crash either...

Well I met a mini goal of mine..
Last nite (Thursday nite) I was able to run for my goal of 15 mins nonstop..
got in 1.2 miles :cheer:
10 min run the day before (Wednesday)
not putting in a lot of miles overall... but my stamina is definitly increasing..
Also, I'm going to put in here the goals that I'm aiming for, per my Running 101 book
Since it was a library book... I had to return it today..
so I'm gonna put the training guide in here so I don't forget

Phase------3 times a week-----Once a week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1----------10 minute run-------15 minute run
2----------10 minute run-------15-20 minute run
3----------10 minute run-------20 minute run
4----------15 minute run-------20 minute run
5----------15 minute run-------20-25 minute run
6----------15 minute run-------25 minute run
7----------20 minute run-------25 minute run
8----------20 minute run-------25-30 minute run
9----------20 minute run-------30 minute run
My left hip is very very slightly bothering me again today... so I'm keeping my eyes on that..
The potassium supplements that the doc prescribed for me have been helping greatly with the "dead" feeling in my legs after my runs...
I'm still getting a little bit of that jello feeling where my legs feel like they're about to collapse tho..
Eating has just been the shits
not sure why we can't seem to stay on track for more than a few days at a time..
we have GOT to stop that
well today marks the start of a new month...
even tho I didn't do nearly as well as I'd like last month, I have no complaints..
I'm still moving and my quest to better health is still there so I'm not worrying about it..
I know, like some runs, that some months will be better than others... and I'm ok with that..
besides, I'm trying to take it easy for my left hip to fully heal...
It's feeling tons better but still a little achy after each run..
3.3 miles tonite
didn't go for 10 or 15 minutes.. in fact, I think the longest stretch was only 5 minutes..
that's ok too.. my average HR was 140's... so I know I'm still workin it
ok... starting over new for september and this time, I WILL post in here each time I get my miles in...
For the month of September (or what's left of it), I've convinced DH to get in at LEAST 30 minutes every single day..
even if we're crawling on the treadmill.. just 30 minutes of at least walking...
so tonite, I got 2 miles in... took me 35 minutes at a "brisk pace"
will do this every day until Europe
Also I've decided to tally up the total calories burned as well..
and at the end of the month, see exactly what I've burned off
THAT should be interesting :lol:
