Folks,

I will be moving to new home soon and I'd like to dedicate a
room (22x20 feet) on 2nd floor (above garage) for my home Gym.
I don't have any room for this down stairs.

I'm planning to put a Treadmill, Stationary Bike/Eliptical and
a light weight training machine ( similar to
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/bsolid/exm1500sbig2.jpg).

I already have a carpet with 6lbs padding. What kind of
additional flooring is recommended to

1) Protect the flooring , ditribute the load
2) Reduce the noise from equipment.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I did just that last year. We enclosed a balcony and made a
small exercise room. I have a recumbent bike, a hyperextension
machine, a bench, and some dumbbells and plates. I plan to get
a cage sometime.

The architect said we would not need any extra flooring for
that. I over-estimated the the cage and weights. No problem.

As for noise, the bike is almost silent. Your treadmill will
be more of a problem.

Rubber mats are the best floor protection. They come in
different forms, but the classic is 3/4" thick, 4' x 6'
sheets. They are available from farm supply stores as horse
stall mats - same thing, half the cost of a fitness store. For
your purposes, they might be more than what you need, but you
can't go wrong with these. For a bit more money, you can get
them in interlocking rectangles, but the 4' x 6' sheets can be
cut with a utility knife.

These won't do much to distribute the load, however.
