i hope this is the right place for this question...

my bf was joking the other night, "does semen have carbs?" well, that got him a punch in the stomach for an answer...

now im starting to wonder... does it? i know it has calories.

Amian
Wed, Apr-04-07, 07:05
I always heard it mostly protein, so over the years I have heard many jokes about "how about a protein boost" etc.

According to TeenWire (http://www.teenwire.com/ask/2003/as-20031009p660-semen.php) :

"A tablespoon of semen contains approximately six calories. Semen does contain protein, but it also contains all kinds of chemicals and minerals, including water, sugar, calcium, chlorine, magnesium, nitrogen, vitamin B12, and zinc. But it does not contain enough of any of these things to be considered "nutritious.""

Hope that helps. :)

Since we are talking about health, the question is... does semen contain anything that might cause a negative health impact if taken orally, like maybe an immuno-suppressant?

Think.

Judging from your nickname you are a DR. I certainly hope you don't reply in that manner to your patients.

It is a legitimate question that many wonder.

The title warns that it is inappropriate - if that puts your radars up why did you even read it?

IF what your do for a living is nobodies business than perhaps you shouldn't flash it about in your nickname.

If it was gross, than just ignore it. Rather than insulting everybody else with your comments.

IF what your do for a living is nobodies business than perhaps you shouldn't flash it about in your nickname. There are many kinds of doctoral degrees that have nothing at all to do with medicine! For all anyone on this site knows, DrH holds a Doctor of Divinity degree, or a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, neither of which would give her occasion ever to see "patients," nor to address questions of the nature being discussed in this thread.

For that matter, it's quite possible that her use of "Dr" doesn't even mean "doctor." Maybe it represents something entirely different that has significance for her. I do hold a doctoral degree, definitely not in medicine, and I've never seen a patient in my entire life other than those sitting in my own medical doctors' waiting rooms when I walk in!

my sil is a pharmacist, and a moron. The in-laws think she's *wonderful*... and they call her "dr. rob"..... so sometimes having dr. in there doesn't even mean squat!

The subject is gross, DrH was in a sense agreeing with the OP who herself regarded it as innapropriate.

According to the Re/Search Guide to Bodily Fluids (Paul Spinard, 1994), the average man produces about 3.5 mL of semen per ejaculation whose nutritional value is:

less than 1 calorie
150 mg. protien
11 mg. carbohydrates
6 mg. fat.
3 mg. cholesterol
7% US RDA potassium
3% US RDA copper
3% US RDA zinc
300 million spermatoza
(Someday men will have to have all this tattooed to the side of their hip, like a can of Coke or a box of Wheaties.)

It looks healthy enough per serving size, but when compared to breast milk (which has about 170 calories per cup), semen has about 40% more calories (about 230 calories per cup). High levels of fructose (fruit sugar!) is normal in the semen and this sugar comes almost entirely from the seminal vesicles.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More Fun Sperm Facts

For the "average" man, the ejaculate contains over 80 million sperm. In addition to the little wiggly things, semen contains (taken from several web sites):
water
ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
blood-group antigens
calcium (yes, just like milk!)
chlorine (add your own little contribution to cleanliness!)
cholesterol (Is this the "bad cholesterol" or "good cholesterol"?)
citric acid, creatine, deoxyribonucleic acid, fructose, glutathione, hyaluronidase, inositol, lactic acid, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (what do you know, these are good for fertilization too!)
prostaglandins (fatty acids that, while not a hormone, perform hormone-like functions)
purine, pyrimidine, pyruvic acid
sodium (good to have, especially if you've been sweating a lot)
sorbitol, spermidine, spermine
vitamin B12 and zinc (you would think it's a multivitamin)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Random Sperm Facts
Average volume of semen per ejaculation: 1-2 teaspoons
Average number of times a man will ejaculate in his lifetime: 7,200
Average total amount of lifetime ejaculate: 18 quarts
Average speed of ejaculation: 28 miles per hour
Its muscle drives nature's only known rotary-joint. The tail SCREWS, not whips. (no pun)
Average number of calories in a teaspoon of semen: 7
Average duration of orgasm: 4 seconds
Average number of sperm cells in the ejaculate of a healthy man: 200 to 600 million
Distance sperm travels to fertilize an egg: 3-4 inches
Sperm lifespan: 2.5 months from development to ejaculation

I would put the URL but there is more "inappropriate" (but fun) stuff there.

And as the info in 2bthinner!'s post explains, semen is mostly protein, with minute amounts of other stuff, such as glucose. Very safe for a low carber. (Not that I've gone to great lengths to tell my DH that...:D)

Personally, I've been a certified nurse midwife for 10 years doing OB care and women's care--nothing, and I mean NOTHING has ever just grossed me out--maybe I have the right constitiution for it--and trust me, I'm sure the OP was embarrassed to have to ask this on a public forum.

Actually I found this thread quite entertaining, especially the sperm facts--who knew???

I don't find it gross or inappropriate, takes a lot more than this to rock my boat.

Would it go under sperm or semen??

Whoever thinks this gross I kinda have to chuckle--I mean is gross because someone had the nerve to ask it in a public forum, or do you think it's gross because it's not something you might partake in???

Oh. my other comment to the OP, does he reciprocate;)

I found the thread rather interesting. I just objected to the automatic assumption that DrH is a physician.

I worked 15 years as a wildlife rehabilitator, which is a very unglamorous avocation. One spends one's time doing such "fun" tasks as wiping up blood and vomit, picking off ticks, pulling blackfly larvae out from under the skin of baby birds, examining the "results" after deworming animals in order to identify the exact species of worm, scrubbing cages, and most of all, simply shoveling buckets full of sh*t every day. That doesn't even include the gazillion times an animal evacuated the entire contents of its bowels and bladder right down the front of my shirt while I was handling the critter! I believe I can honestly say there is not much left that is likely to gross me out, either.

But I'm a scientist, and I have an intense curiosity about all things. That's the only reason I even looked at this thread.

Now that we've all revealed a great deal about our sexual preferences... one man's feather is another man's chicken.

Think about it: It's mostly all DNA, and that's protein. At 6 calories total and 4 calories / gram of protein, I wouldn't think the sugar is going to be enough to make any difference, given the amount of energy expended in acquiring same, esp. compared to the value to the relationship...

YMMV.

On one hand if you don't ask, you don't find out.

Personally, I gag at the sight of open wounds--and I have 4 kids. Open wounds are the norm as a parent, but that doesn't mean that I've never confronted the problem. So on the other hand, if someone expresses an opinion that is different than yours, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. We're allowed to be different, too. So part of being grown up is knowing when to let other people express their individual opinions without rolling up the newspaper and swatting them on the nose for it.

Kids and boogers. Something else I'm well acquainted with. Do we even have to mention earwax?

This 'very inappropriate question' surely has been nicely dealt with - and hardly inappropriate at all, I might add.

There are so many questions we all have - some like this, very specific - that we shouldn't be afraid to ask.

I'm glad we are not afraid of learning, first off, but even more importantly, I am so happy we can deal with subject matter like this is a frank, open, mature way.

We can in fact talk about more things than just bacon here - hooray!

OH.. Oh.. and what if he's had a vasectomy? Does this make it less nutritious, lower carb, diet sperm? And to be even more specific (please forgive me to those who are offended) how many daily servings would be allowed?

Relax. ;) 1000mg = 1 gram, so one, er, "serving" will give you only 0.011g carbs.

lol its the internet, there is wayyyyyyyyyy worse out there, i think its actually a good question, knowing if it could disrupt your "atkins program or weight loss program" is an important enough debate and a few laughs wont hurt either
