Low carb headaches are usually due to carb withdrawl. Make sure you drink enough water to clean out the toxians.

Welcome to the forums. I think there are some specific threads regarding your requirements.

The idea that low fat lowers your triglycerides is generally not true.
My tris went from 140 to 44 eating Atkins.

I would say, pick a specific plan and follow it to the best of your ability for a month. See how you're doing. Then you can tweak from there.

Most of us felt horrible for the first week of low carbing. There is a big detox effect that most people call 'induction flu'. This is normal, and in the overall picture a good thing as your body detoxes from carbs and learns to burn fat. It only lasts a few days and once you come out the other side, you'll feel fantastic.

High triglycerides are caused totally by carbohydrate consumption. The only way they can be lowered without medication is by lowering carbohydrates considerably. You can't do that eating totally vegetarian. Mine weren't real high to begin with (150) but now with high fat Atkins, they are 72. My cholesterol wasn't real high, either, but my bad kind is lower and the good kind is way higher.

Lowering your triglycerides level

Fortunately, elevated triglycerides is one of the easiest problems to correct with the appropriate diet. Simple restriction of all sugars and grains.

Sugars and grains and require insulin secretion, which is a potent stimulus to the liver to produce triglycerides, and sugars and grains must be reduced if you are looking to lower your triglycerides.

High triglycerides in the blood are often seen in overweight people. But even people who are not overweight may have stores of fat in their arteries as a result of insulin resistance. These triglycerides in the blood are the direct result of carbohydrates from the diet being converted by insulin. These triglycerides do not come directly from dietary fats. They are made in the liver from any excess sugars which have not been used for energy.

The grains are rapidly metabolized to simple sugars, which studies have clearly associated with elevated triglyceride levels. (4) The right approach is to radically reduce consumption of all simple sugars and grains. In contrast to the drug options which are traditionally applied, it is inexpensive and simple to substitute green leafy vegetables, which have a low glycemic index, for sugars and grains, and there are no toxic effects.

Contrary to popular belief, a low fat diet is NOT the solution to lowering high triglycerides levels. The researchers Van Horn and Lichtenstein extensively reviewed the low-fat approach a few years ago (5). Their research suggests that a low-fat diet will produce a result opposite to the desired effect: triglyceride levels will actually increase. This phenomenon is not surprising if one considers that insulin resistance may be one of the driving factors behind elevated triglyceride levels. In fact, insulin resistance may be the cause of many of the problems observed in high-triglyceride states.(6,7)

Even the American Heart Association gives this advice: Substituting carbohydrates for fats may raise triglyceride levels and may decrease HDL ("good") cholesterol in some people.

Welcome Groviechick! Your headaches are normal and go away within a few days, just like the others say. I know it seems wierd to eat so much fat when you're concerned about your cholesterol, but do some reading around the forums and you'lll see that yoru cholesterol will actually drop. For me this has been a big change in eating since I was a typical low-fat dieter. As you can tell by my stats, eating low-fat made me fat. Who knew? So anyway, hang in there and visit here often. Everyone is 100% supportive and friendly and while I know I've only lost 11lbs so far, I could not have stuck it out so long without these generous supportive souls.

 Welcome and congratulations on your choice to begin the LC WOL Groviechic. I read a very interesting post by Doreen that addresses trygicerides. Doreen's Post (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32276)

It covers how Atkins and PP affects cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, etc.

I was pasting this somewhere else and thought I'd paste it here for encouragement.

My triglycerides were 120 before low carb

I do all saturated fat all the time except for salads, and eat whatever meat I choose. My cholesterol values from Jan. were:

Cholesterol 160 100-149
Triglycerides 41 0-149
HDL 55 40-59
LDL 97 0-99

Risk ratio 2.9 standard 3.4

When your triglycerides are very low, then your LDL is the big fluffy kind.

i am on atkins and i love it...but because of your circumstances, i was thinking of another diet i did that i had sucess on. Its called the DR. Ians Fat Smash diet. for 9 days you eat fruits(unlimited) and veggies(unlimited) except no avacado or white potato. beans for protein, egg whites, 1 cup oatmeal, (2) 6 oz containers of fat free yogurt and 2 cups of brown rice a day. No caffiene or diet pop 9 days (except you can have tea) and no meat. you add meat and stuff back after 9 days..... just a thought...my first week i lost 9 pounds...he encourages exercise but i didnt and still lost.... if it sounds like something you would like to do, i encourage checking out the book.

The first time I started Atkins was because my Electrolytes were 4 times normal levels. Within 6 weeks they were all back within normal levels.

Atkin's suggest that you have your levels checked after 6 weeks. Do this and you will be very surprised!
