These are the supplements sitting on my counter that my husband keeps reminding me to take, and i keep forgetting about...He's pretty educated about these things...and i also keep forgetting what he tells me the benefits are of these particular supplements...I'm pretty sure fish oil is good for memory; i should probably take a whole bottle right now...

Fish oil and other forms of EFA.
calcium
magnesium
vitamin D
Multi ( i like the green kind that has EVERYTHING and the kitchen sink in it)

By the way, I've been hearing a lot about magnesium lately- one friend takes it for headaches and it works for her. My DH has been taking it before bed and he swears it is helping him sleep better. It is one to look into if you don't already know about it.

Another thing i heard is that vitamins E and C are not turning out to be as beneficial as (the scientists who study vitamins) previously thought.

Well I think that it is a good idea to take a really good multi vitamin, whether you are on LC or not...but an especially good idea if you are doing LC...I have found a really good one at Whole Foods, called "ALIVE!"...I was particularly interested in one that had a lot of Vitamin C, which is has twice what most multi vitamins have...It is not cheap, but then a really good multi vitamin will not be...it is well worth it to me..The hardest part of taking a multi vitamin is remembering to take it!

Dr. Eades strongly recommends taking magnesium, as well. 400 to 600 mgs daily. I take that, with 1000 mg of fish oil, 500 mg of calcium, 800 mg folic acid, and I'm about to add 300 mg of CoQ10, 50 mg of zinc, 600 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid, 400-800 mcg of chromium picolate, 50 mg of B6, 1000 mcg of B12, and 400 IU of vitamin E.

The magnesium does help with sleep, at least for me. I get a very sound 8 hours every night, whereas I barely got 6 before.

I typically recommend a "mega" multivitamin - one where you have to take about 6 or 8 capsules per day. I would recommend that you get a higher quality one.

I would also say that lots of fish oil (like 4 grams per day) is also required. Women may want to take less fish oil and add in more plant based oils (borrage, flaxseed, evening primrose, etc)

I like chromium for helping to control blood sugar and cravings

Magnesium is good. If you are getting constipated - you are not taking enough. If you have diareha(?) then you are taking too much. Try to find a point in between.

Potassium supplementation is usually required on a low carb diet. Use salt substitute. Like 3,000 mg per day.

Calcium is not bad -- I am calcium intolerant -- so I eat a lot of fat and fat soluble vitamins which help me absorb more of the calcium I do eat.

If you have inflammation - turmeric (Curcumin) is very good

Most of the antioxidants are highly recommended. You might even want to change those around each month.

If you have joint pain - Glucosamine Chondroitin is recommended

and on and on and on ...

but the "mega" multi and fish oil I would say are the minimum requirement

I take a mulivitamin that I get from a health food store. It's called One N' Only. I also take Biotin, Selenium, Alpha Lipoic Acid every day. These are suppose to be great antioxidents.

I take CLA & Chromium Picolinate but am out of it now. I also try to take a tablespoon of Flax Seed Oil every day but sometimes forget. It's great for getting those omega 3's that we need!

I am really into this and am always reading the latest on this subject!

Oh, one more thing, I am totally slack about taking calcium supplements. I need to get better about this one! I read that you should take this without other supplements because some of the vitamins in the other supp. can block the calcium absorption. So, what do I do??? I take my other supp. and try to remind myself to take the calcium later. Then, I forget!!

I do take a lot of supplements, but I have health issues that go beyond obesity and low carb nutrition issues; namely diabetes w/ nerve damage, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and muscle damage from statins.

There's probably a lot more I could take, but there's a limit to the number of pills I can swallow daily and afford! I always try to buy capsules over pills, when available, and I always take with a large glass of warm water, as I believe that taking them with cold drinks may slow down their disolution rate. I discovered that my headaches go away much faster when I take a pain med with warm over cold water, so made sense to apply that reasoning to my supplements. (Read an article one time about NY sanitation workers saying the sewers were filled with pills. haha!)

anyway, I take a good multi, plus extra
Potassium
Vitamin D
Calcium
Magnesium
COQ10
GTF Chromium
Vit C
5-HTP
Triple Omega
B-Complex

I also take Super Flex Joint for pain relief, and
Glucoter 2 for diabetic support

I take a multi + 1 tablespoon Cod Liver Oil + extra Vitamin D3 + extra Magnesium + extra Calcium.

My multi seems to have a lot of Bs, C and even D3 in it(more than 100% RDA). Here it is:

We have someone that knows about Vitamin Shoppe! We expect you to chime in everytime we get into these discussions and let us know what vitamin shoppe has to offer. :-)

Seriously. I feel that we need more input about other suppliers.

All I really know about is Vitacost, only a little about LEF.org and a little about GNC. I forgot the companies that GoStrdr(?) recommends. Some others recommend swanson vitamins and iherb - and now we have our Vitamin Shoppe representative.

I don't want to sound like a sales rep for Vitacost - I want people to find what is best for them and then tell us why. Unfortuantely, I can not keep up on exactly what each supplier has to offer.

If you take magnesium, be careful about taking it on an empty stomach. It makes me horribly nauseous.

Good point. Lots of vitamins are like that. Most should be taken just after breakfast and dinner. I think amino acids are about the only supplements that should be taken on an empty stomach.

I take fish oil for depression in a pretty high dose. I use an enteric coated brand that dissolves in the small intestine. While it is pretty expensive, it supposedly absorbs better and it definitely cuts down on the fishy burps! After being on it awhile I noticed that my joint pains had disappeared and I was able to stop taking MSM/Glucosamine. I also take vitamin D for depression and general health.

I take folic acid, originally for PCOS. I never noticed a difference in that but then a coworker told me her doctor makes her take it for heart health and I've read it is helpful to prevent cancer, so I kept on with it. I take silymarin to help liver function.

I also take A&D, E, C, B complex, zinc. I don't want to take a multi because I like to control my amounts and don't want iron or iodine (can aggravate acne in some people.) Also I hate taking horse pills and it's hard to find a good multi that isn't a huge, hard pill.

I take magnesium-potassium-apartate at night because it helps me sleep. I haven't noticed a difference in my bowel habits, I may try doubling the dose and see what happens.
