I'm wanting to buy my uncle a couple of books - and I was thinking of Atkins Diabetes Revolution and Dr. Bernstein's book, "Diabetes Solution".

Would these be the two best books to give to someone who's struggling with their diabetes? My uncle's diabetes is getting worse, he's having trouble with eyesight, and his 'diabetes specialist' thinks his old 'diabetic diet' given to him in the 80's is just fine. Only...he keeps having to add more and more medications to keep his blood sugars in line.

He actually went to see his doctor...asking for the 'latest and greatest' in diet, saying that he wanted to go on a better diet, and his doc said, "Oh no, you're fine".

Since I'm going to be visiting my hometown soon, I thought I'd take along some books...

Would these two be good?

Thanks,

Sara

As it specifically relates to diabetes, those are probably the first two books that I'd recommend.
If your uncle is more interested in the science behind low carbing, I'd recommend Protein Power as well since they do a good job of explaining the science in a way most people can understand.

Thanks Lisa - I just wanted some clarification on the 'best' books for diet-controlled improvement in one's diabetes management plan.

I think my uncle is ready for this - since he was the one who went to his doc looking for a 'new diet' because he was tired of adding more and more medications etc. He basically got the brush off, so I'm hoping that by giving him these books, he'll have a nice starting point - or at the very least, an eye-opening view on the whole 'diabetes diet' scenario.

I managed to order the Atkins one from amazon - but they're backordered to some extent on the Dr. Bernstein one, so I'll look at my local bookstore for that.

Thanks again :)

If your uncle is computer literate, you might point him in the direction of Dr. Bernstein's website for a headstart on some reading; you can read portions of the book there and they also have a support forum for diabetics following that plan. The website is www.diabetes-book.com
