I just celebrated 1 year smoke free last month. I still get cravings! I'm sure I will for a long time. And I still smoke in my dreams! I wake up feeling soooooo guilty. But now I know I can handle any of the cravings and get past them.
Yes you can shower with the patch on. And if you can, I would continue to use it for the full ten weeks. It will really help you even if you think you don't need it. Each time you get by a craving your mind learns to handle the situation and those desperate cravings become less and less.
Good luck to all who have made the decision to live smoke free.
You will not regret it!

It is day 80 for me. And yes, the cravings are still there. They're not as bad as when I first started but they sneak up on me. Along with the homicidal thoughts. Just kidding. I am having trouble LCing because I read that nicotine actually helps with sugar cravings, which makes sense as to why people generally gain weight when they quit. I bought good smelling lotion because that's one of my biggest things, I used to hate smelling like smoke. Good luck to everyone. I am proud to be among such strong people.

1953 days, 8 hours, 25 minutes and 30 seconds (5 years and 5 months) smoke free.
78134 cigarettes not smoked.
£18,241.02 and 19 months, 26 days, 20 hours of your life saved.
I very rarely even think about cigarettes these days, let alone have any cravings, so I was rather surprised to experience a slight twinge at the weekend. I was with a group of friends who were smoking, and I suddenly had the urge for a cigarette, and could see my hand reaching for the nearest pack. I immediately though 'how stupid' and with that, the urge was gone.
Has anyone else had the same sort of experience?

I smoked from 16 years old until 38. August 29th will be my one year mark. I quit drinking alcohol that day too. Did too much of both. I can't believe I didn't do that years ago. That is the only thing I think about. The first couple of weeks I would think about wanting a smoke, it would come in "waves" and then I just put it out of my mind. My dad told me that would happen and he quit in 1986. I love being able to exercise more and I have more energy. Quitting smoking is the greatest thing I have ever done for myself --- yet. Now if this atkins thing works out, life will be perfect. Good luck to all you quitting smoking. You really don't need luck or gum just put it out of your mind and do something else the very second you think about it.

congrats. It will be much easier on vacation with non smokers with you. I have a trip coming up to Vegas to visit my dad. I quit drinking, smoking, eating lots of food. My dad says he doesn't know what I am going to do there. I am going to learn how to play Texas hold-em live, without the computer. Also, a law passed in Vegas 3 years ago, no smoking in any poker room. That should be nice.
Have fun on your vacation

you lost 100 lbs, there isn't anything you can't do if you set your mind to it. Just keep telling yourself that if you have a craving it will go away if you think about something else and don't let the thought enter your mind again. You are in control of your mind. Way to go. After the first couple of weeks, you won't feel like you do today.

Sleep is very important at this time. I found my ratinalization skills and emotions were on overload if I didn't get my 8 hrs sleep. AT LEAST.

I agree with feelskinny. You should pamper yourself because your body is going through a big change. You lungs start healing a couple hours after you quit smoking. I read this link, can't remember where, ugh. Anyway, it said what happens to you after 1 hour, one day, one week, etc. I think by 10 years you have the same chance for lung cancer as a non smoker, not that much. You are really saving your health. You will be cranky and tired for a bit but then you will freak with the energy you have.

I joked with my husband that I am going to celebrate with a keg and an carton of cigs. I can't celebrate with cake or ice cream so I am going to shop for something new to wear. Hopefully I will be down in weight so something will look good on me. Isn't it great not to smoke. I smoked for 22 years and now I am just mad I didn't quit sooner. I really never did a really big try because I didn't think I could do it. I now figure if I can, anyone can. I have the most addictive personality I know. Okay, you made me see the light. I quit smoking and drinking August 29, 2007 and my husband December 21st. We planned a 10 day cruise through the Panama Canal for my 40th b-day in December. I was feeling a little guilty because we ended up getting a balcony and it was kind of expensive but I now see the light. I can't imagine how much money we have saved on no beer and cigs in the last year but it has to pay for part of the trip. It also helps me by setting a date to look decent in a swim suit. Way to go all non smokers. I LOVE saying I am a non smoker. It took me a long time to say that but I really am for life. I can't ever imaging smoking. For some reason, the smell makes me sick now. I love that, so I won't be tempted.

I think that's going to be what I call myself from now on. I'm a loser and a quitter and proud of it!!! You are pretty strong. Remember that and you'll never smoke again. I used to have this form. I bet I found it on the internet somewhere. It said what happens to your lungs when you quit smoking after 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1month, etc. It was so weird to see that you can erase everything. My dad started smoking at 13 years old. He quit in 1986 and his lungs are pink. Ours will be too!!! YEAH!!

I quit using tobacco on March 10th 2008 after 29 years. Cold turkey. My doctor told me he would not do my much needed leg surgery unless I quit 6 weeks prior.
I have used my fast acting asthma inhaler 3 times in 6 months, and have not used my daily Advair inhaler even once!! I used to use both inhalers 2-4 times daily.
Caffeine and sugar followed. I now have 1 cup of coffee a week and no sugar. None of this was easy for me but I was stuck on the second floor of a condo in a cast with no elevator and in a wheelchair for 2 months unable to bear weight on 1 leg. I don't suggest this method for anyone else but it sure worked for me..:) :) :)

One cheat.
Somewhere in Aug.
I can't explain how much I LOVED smoking.
Yet that morning in early June, I just knew. No more.
There was no building up to it, now preparative psychology. That was just it I guess.
So far, I still think about it. Some-days are still a battle.

I love saying I am a non smoker. It took me a long time to want to say that because, what if I started again. When I felt there was no way I would start again, I said I was a non smoker and it's been the best year ever. I smoked for 22 years so it was giving up a friend.. but the cig was not a friend. I used to say i enjoyed smoking but what I really enjoyed when I was able to look at it objectively was not having the craving to smoke. Well since that only happened when I smoked I figured I enjoyed the smoke. Well no cravings at all. I only thing about it when I read this blog but I like to because it's nice to know that we can do it. Good luck to all of you quitters.

Congrats to all of you, it is a hard thing to do and it is possible, even cold turkey. My quit day was Sept 13 2007, I am now just over one year smoke free. Stick to it, you all can do it. I did it cold turkey. Wow, I still can't believe it did it cold turkey, but I did. I can say for sure I smoked for about 27 years and in the last about 10 years over a pack a day. So this is possible. Don't ever give up.....

Way to go Ladylaughs,
We are both in the one year club. We know it can be done just by putting them down physically and mentally.

Hey Kisal,
How did you figure out how much time extra you get in life? I quit Aug 29, 2007. I would love to have a count down (or up) on that. I know it is supposed to be a certain amount of time but I have seen a couple of different ones. where did you get your info.I joined a site called Quitnet.com (it's free.) I hardly ever post there, but they provide what they call a "gadget" that automatically keeps a record of all your stats. I just go there, open my gadget, and copy the data and paste it in here. :)

It will be 9 years on January 4th. I made a New Years resolution for New Years Day 2000. I asked my husband not to smoke in the house until I was through the worst of it and he agreed. One evening I was taking a load of laundry into the basement and there he was having a cigarette, he looked like a little boy who got caught doing something naughty. In June of that year we were out fishing and I asked him if he was still smoking and he said no I quit the night you found me having one in the basement. Both of us cold turkey and the best thing we ever did.

Thanks, Kisal! :)
Here are my stats:
Time Smoke-Free: 17 days, 2 hours, 40 minutes and 2 seconds
Cigarettes NOT smoked: 86
Lifetime Saved: 15 hours
Money Saved: $15.75
Since they allowed for setting the hours, I used 11PM on December 3rd, but my "official" quit date is December 4th.
This thread is a great inspiration to stay focused. Congratulations to all of you!

Congrats everyone! I am coping with dbf quitting smoking this weekend. Holy Cow the withdrawal symptoms - it's like me on super pms! Took me back to this summer when I had the screamin' meamies for 10 days! Whew! The odd thing is that I've been thinking about cigs lately. Won't go there but, man!
You've been free of cigarettes for 195 days, 20 hours, 53 minutes & 4 seconds. You have not smoked 5,876 cigarettes since then, and you have saved a total of $1,366.20.

Mid June. I don't even recollect the exact date, and am too lazy right now to look it up.
All I can say is, IT'S WORTH the battle.
Kudos to my non-smokers!

I know what you mean...it's been over 3 years since I quit and I was surprised a couple of times over the holidays with some triggers. Wasn't really tempted, but given that I hardly ever think about smoking anymore, it can catch you a little off guard to suddenly find yourself thinking about it.
