Viper - I know how you feel, I have had a couple of dreams that I was smoking. I kept asking myself "what am I doing, I don't do this anymore?" They are funny.
Last night I went to a horse auction in a little town not far away. I ran into a friend of mine I hadn't seen in awhile. She is a smoker and we were sitting there and I finally had to get up and move to the other side of her because the smoke was bothering me. There were other people smoking there too. This morning when I got up I felt like I had been smoking. I just had that terrible taste in my mouth and the heaviness in my chest. I guess I do believe the second hand smoke theories now!
Have a great day everyone!
Linda :D
P.S. I am doing the meat/egg fast and have lost 5 lbs. in two days, I can hardly believe it!

Viper: I know how you feel, that dream is freaky...I have had a few, in one I dreamed I was dreaming and in my dream I woke up and realized I wasnt dreaming...I finally woke up for real and didnt know whether to feel guilty or not
Linda, I have to say I am very proud of you. Taking on two addictions at once is no small feat. We went out with my mom and a friend of hers from work the other night and by the time we left, my eyes were burning and I reeked of smoke. I took a shower as soon as we got home.

I am up one pound today but think I may have overdone it on mayo last night. I will not do that again. I am doing the meat/egg diet and need to just stay with meat and eggs and spices. Doable. I will still take the 4 lbs. loss!
I feel so empowered now that I am conquering my addictions, does anyone else have that feeling? Shoot, I think I could fly if I really tried!
Exercise and water, two things I have slacked off on. Back on track today, no fooling around. I know how to do this and there is no excuse for me not to. I have to be tough on myself or I will make excuses. Please, feel free to be tough on me too!
Ok, have to run but everyone have a great day. Thanks for the encouragement Ponya, I need it!

What Happens When You Quit Smoking?
Within 30 minutes of quitting smoking, your pulse rate slows down and blood pressure drops toward normal.
Within hours of stopping, the level of carbon monoxide in your blood drops, enabling the blood to carry more oxygen.
Two days after quitting, nerve endings begin to recover and your sense of smell and taste begin to return.
Within 72 hours of quitting, your lungs’ bronchial tubes expand and lung volume increases.
Months after quitting, shortness of breath diminishes.
In the first year, the risk of heart attack attributed to smoking declines for both men and women.
Two to three years after quitting, the risk of heart attack attributed to smoking is virtually gone.
After 10 years, the risk of developing cancer is about the same as for nonsmokers.

You can do this, Wa'il! You are now past the peak of withdrawal symptoms and the nicotine is completely out of your system.
It can take up to 2 weeks, though, for your brain to completely make the switch from relying on nicotine to functioning without it although I noticed that I felt a lot more clear-headed by day 5. :)

I guess I figure that the nicorette is not bad for me, so I'll chew it til I get tired of payin for it.
Nicorette's not as bad for you as tobacco because the nicotine doesn't come in a package that also delivers a lot of other toxic substances to your body but nicotine is still an unhealthy chemical to put in your body long term and the sooner you can wean off it the better.
Nicotine can contribute to insulin resistance as well as high blood pressure and heart disease even if you don't get it via tobacco. It also can raise your levels of LDL cholesterol (the bad kind), your levels of adrenaline (a stress hormone) and your levels of blood glucose (which is how it can contribute to insulin resistance).
So, yeah...Nicorette isn't as bad for you as continuing to smoke or dip, but it's certainly not harmless by any means.

I was a 40 year smoker and at the end smoked 2PPD. Never thought I would be able to quit. A friend of mine who lives in France referred me to Quitnet. I will never smoke again.
Of course, now that I quit, my problems with food and insulin really came to a head. But you know, that is a good thing. I still am in basically good shape and can do something about it. I had followed the Hellers plans before and had learned a lot from the first time round...like not drinking diet pop.
I am now following Hellers CALP and feel terrific. I was very afraid to give up the nicotine lozenges but since I have been doing low carb, I don't seem to be having craves. I realized early on in my quit that I had smoked so much, I had lost my ability to tell thirst and hunger from the urge to smoke. I also did not know how to breathe normally. If I did still have to use NRT, I would though. I would get by somehow. Anything is better than going back to smokes.

I quit smoking February 6, 2005.
I was smoking 1 1/2 PPD. I had smoked since I was 13 years old; I'm 28 right now. That was my third serious attempt at quitting. I used the generic nicotine gum sold at Wal-Mart. Without it, I doubt I would have been able to quit.

It's great to see how all you quitters are getting along, and there's some quite amazing stats being posted here  :D
I'm fast approaching my 4th anniversary, which I find remarkable. I was a 40-a-day smoker, who didn't want to give up, but thought that maybe she should - in other words, a sure-fire candidate for failure.
But guess what ... I did it, and not only am i so glad I did, I don't even miss one little bit ... in fact I actually loathe the smell of cigarette smoke these days!
So, what I'm trying to say is that if I can do it, then so can you! :)

I have been smoke free for exactly 48 days and I feel great. I started to low-carb again after three weeks of quitting. I felt if I could tackle quitting smoking I could also quit eating carbs. The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr really helped me out. You should defintly read it. After reading the book I never wanted to smoke again. I highly suggest it because it puts you in a different mind set about smoking. Now everytime I see someone light up I don't feel like I am missing out - I would never give smoking that much credit.
Best of luck!

Someone please tell me when I will stop reaching for my cigarettes? When will I not wish I was smoking one?
When you get it through your head that you are not giving up something wonderful. Sorry to be blunt, but as long as you believe you are depriving yourself of something special and good, you are going to have a terrible time giving it up because not only are you fighting your addiction, you're also fighting what you believe is your love of your addictive substance.
What you are giving up is something that is doing nothing good for your body and is, in fact, slowly killing you.
Day 3 is usually the peak for nicotine withdrawal and after that, the cravings get fewer and fewer because at 72 hours, your blood is nicotine free; you are officially free of your addiction. It will take about 2 weeks for your brain to learn to live without the constant hits of nicotine.
Let me make a suggestion. Get a stopwatch and time how long your cravings last when you have one. Also, write down how many times you are actually craving a cigarette. Not just thinking about smoking, but honest-to-God craving. When you see it on paper, it doesn't look as bad as you think it is; I estimate 12 true craving episodes a day at peak and lasting no more than 3 minutes each.
The psychological triggers take considerably longer to disappear. Some report running into them years after they have quit but they are definitely few and far between at that point; that's when they can be most dangerous because they catch you off guard and why you hear about people who have been quit 15 years starting up again.
I've been nicotine free for almost 15 months and have only just gotten to the point within the past month or two where I don't think about smoking in some way every day.

I am glad you're blunt, it's what I need to hear.... but what I want to hear is that this feeling will go away soon. I dont work weekends, and I feel like I dont know what to do with myself today. I tried to stay busy. I took my son to the mall, we stayed in Borders book store a long time, then I shopped around, then we went to the grocery store, then came home and danced around in the kitchen while I cooked dinner (low carb pizza from the recipe board) Now I'm on-line, and I'm going to try to go to bed around 9pm....just so I dont have to think about anything. I think as long as I can stay busy .... the weekdays are not so bad, Im at work, and I work at a Hospital. It's the weekends that is tough....and this is my 1st weekend as a non-smoker.

Sat, Jan-27-07, 19:29
Well, here are my stats:
Time Smoke-Free: 518 days, 21 hours, 19 minutes and 50 seconds
Cigarettes NOT smoked: 15,567
Lifetime Saved: 3 months, 28 days, 21 hours
Money Saved: $4,281.75 (if someone finds this, please let me know)
I can tell you that I rarely miss it now, but there are still times. Usually any "firsts"... first weekend, first vacation, first <fill in holiday here>... I still occasionally have that, "Oh yeah, I don't smoke anymore" moment, but it's very, very rare, and it passes quickly.
My demon still whispers to me at times that my apparent inability to lose weight began after I quit smoking, so I should start again... just long enough to lose weight, of course. Good thing I know he's full of cr*p.
Anyway, there is hope. I had a horrible time for awhile, got every cold imaginable (including pneumonia) for about 6 months (I had a daughter in pre-K last year that brought home new diseases all the time, and I caught them all), but it passed.
What helped me a lot in the beginning was lists. What do I like better about me now? I don't wake up coughing in the night anymore. I don't stink anymore. I'm not constantly worrying if I'll run out, or bundling my daughter up late in the evening so we can run to the store. (... and so on ...) Why am I doing this again? What are things I can do instead of smoking? Where will I spend all my savings? (I like lists)
Journalling helped a lot. I was on Quitnet.com the whole time, I couldn't have done it without that place.
Anyway, quitting smoking is a "fantabulous, hu-mazing, gigundonormous" thing (as my daughter would say) and you should be very, very proud of yourself. I wish I'd done it years earlier!

You are giving up NOTHING and smoking takes EVERYTHING. I quit in July of this year and am still fresh enough to know what you're going through. I turned a corner around day 40...turned another corner around day 100..and turned a huge corner at the six month mark.
I went cold turkey. I smoked for 25ish years and was up to almost two packs a day. I never thought I could quit. Please go read the site and see if it helps you. Keep going...there is nothing I've ever done that has made me feel as proud as quitting smoking.Im on day 2, and all I can say is it better get better than this, because this is worse than smoking. Good job everyone one. Tomorrow I will have been smoke free for six weeks. Problems is the 8 or so lbs I have gained that I can't lose even on Atkins induction. Any idea from those of you who have been smoke free for a while? I am tempted to smoke everytime I try to put my old jeans on and they don't fit! Help, I am tired of wearing sweats. Yes, I excercise, a lot, and it still won't budge. Suggestions? Again, congrats to everyone and keep up the good work!
I am looking for some similar advice on losing the weight. :help:
My quit date was October 2, 2006. I've been smoke-free for 4 months & 11 days! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Far be it for me to give advice to an Oklahoman, but, since you're Low-carbing, you must be OK!! :-) I'd suggest making sure you have enough fat in your plan, and not too much salt/sodium. I've recently added Coconut oil to my diet, between 1 & 3 tablespoons per day, eventually getting up to about 4-5 per day.

Thanks PitViper and Millercm!
I think I am going to try the meat and egg only thing at least for awhile. I need something to *jump start* my metabolism, I think. My weight has not moved in 5 weeks and I have only gone above 20 carbs per day twice during that time. That shouldn't be enough to keep me from losing anything at all!

I'm actually doing it! I feel I have gotten to a point already that I'm not thinking about it every 2 minutes. I have maybe an urge or two a day....and I can handle that!
I went back on strict induction the few weeks surrounding my quit date, and I've fallen off the wagon...I seriously need to jump back on...I have not gained any, but feel bloated and crappy. I still have quite a ways to go before I get to my goal too...but so far on this road, Ive dropped almost 80 pounds and became a non-smoker...not to shabby!

I am 3 years and 27 days smoke free. Never thought I'd see the day! Of course I replaced the evil weeds with Snicker bars and picked up about 25 lbs. Still working on taking them off- nearly half way to my goal. But I am super strong and I will achieve my goal weight.
If you are quitting- hang in there- you WILL feel normal again. I wish someone would have told me that- I really struggled for a long time, but I feel better now than ever!

do i have to start over if i had 1 cigarette on vacation?
Hi Nicole,
Here's what I learned over at QuitNet. If you slip and have just one it's a slip. If you're having them on any regular basis it's a relapse.
With a slip it's just that, a slip. Look for the trigger, like what was going on, how did you feel, etc. Next time you know that you will be in that situation again then have a plan ready...whatever works best for you, NRT gum or sugar-free gum, celery sticks, take a walk, etc.
Just one doesn't make it a relapse and I would keep counting yourself as a non-smoker from your quit date.
Keep up the good work Nicole and I'm so glad that ciggy was gross.

Congratulations to all of you!!
I have this thread in my subscribed threads and I have been off the board for some months now. Everytime someone posts I get the post in my list, and I think that maybe someone or something is trying to tell me something.
Well, in the process of going off the board I have also taken up smoking again, and I was doing great for some time before I picked the darn things up again.
It was my first time at quitting and I was proud of myself for being able to quit when I did. I smoked for over 30 years and could not get to the point where I could even think about putting them down, until I quit while I was here before.:(
I had a lot of GREAT support here then, and it really astound me that people that you could not see, did not really know, or for that matter even know if they were who they said they were could have such an impact on your life that they could coach you into doing something that you never could do before, even with the people in your everyday life trying to help!
I am gratful to all of them that did that for me, and all of you here have some wonderful people to support you and get you through. Yes, I have realized that even when you can not see the people they are some of the best you will ever meet.
I guess I am just saying thanks for that, and I am ready to get rid of these things again but just do not know how to get to that point, that I was at months ago.
Good Luck to you all You have made one of the best moves in your life for your health and your future!

I posted and then read this. As far as weight gain, or losing weight after you quit smoking, I don't think it's the cigarettes that helped you to lose the weight originally or gain weight for that matter, so I don't think that quitting has any baring on losing weight, once you quit.
I gained more when I picked them back up than I ever did once I quit.:)
Good Luck to you and stay smoke free, you will start losing again, I assure you.

Hi everybody! I'm so happy to finally be free from nicotine. I was a smoker for about 15 years, yuck! I remember thinking it was cool (what a idiot). I actually went to the Body Worlds 3 exibit and that helped me to quit. I viewed the lungs of a smoker and was sick to my stomach. I just wake up in the morning and say "today I decided I don't want to smoke, tomorrow I will worry about tomorrow. I just have to get through today" and that seems to work. I have found that www.whyquit.com (http://www.whyquit.com/) is packed full of information and that really helped me to quit and stay quit.
Good luck to all of you who are just starting your quit and congratulations to you all for making the decision and sticking with it!

16 days smoke free. I am chewing so much nic gum my jaw hurts and I have bitten the inside of my cheeks so many times I have welts. Anybody have any experience with the gum? How long did you use it? Also, I am in ketosis can I still gain weight? despite the ketosis I am still eating more than normal even if it is on plan. I feel like I am in a kind of limbo and am just taking it one day at a time.

I did use the gum for one of my quits but it sounds like you are chewing it too much. The nicotine gum isn't supposed to be chewed like a regular piece of gum. You're only supposed to chew it until you get that peppery taste and then hold it between your cheek and gum for a bit, chew a few more times, hold. Repeat. But after about 20 or no more than 30 minutes, you're supposed to spit out the gum, not chew it until it's time for your next piece.

Great job Marlenca!! I've been using Nicorette since I quit chewing tobacco on December 30, 2005. I would chew 2 pieces at a time of the 4 mg, did that for a year. I quit cold turkey and although the first 3 days were rough, I haven't had too hard of a time since then. Once in awhile if I'm having a drink and someone is smoking I have a craving for approx 5 -10 seconds and then it is gone. Keep keeping your guard up, Robin. :) I think some relapse this far into a quit because we tend to let our guards down thinking it's all smooth sailing from here and get caught more off guard by the occasional trigger now than when we were newly quit expecting them.

It has been 1 year and 39 days since I quit. I still get a wiff of fresh tobacco now and then and have a craving, but will never smoke again. I think the whole idea of quitting was harder then actually quitting! I went cold turkey, just because I know if I would have used the gum, or a patch that gave me nicotine, I would have started again. For me it was easier just to cut off all sources of my nicotine/smoking addiction.

Last month, at the annual scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians, researchers from the North Shore Medical Center in Massachusetts presented the results of a 26-week intervention study that compared different smoking cessation techniques.
The North Shore team recruited nearly 70 smokers who had been treated for cardiopulmonary conditions – that is, conditions that affect both the heart and lungs simultaneously. All of the subjects expressed a desire to quit smoking.
Subjects were divided into four groups:
One group received a series of hypnotherapy sessions
One group received nicotine replacement
One group received nicotine replacement combined with hypnotherapy
One group was made up of subjects who said they preferred to quit on their own, "cold turkey"
In that latter group, one in four subjects successfully quit smoking, while only 16 percent kicked their habit in the group that received only nicotine replacement. In both of the other groups, about half the subjects were able to leave cigarettes behind.
---------------------------------------------
Gratification delayed
---------------------------------------------
The North Shore study hasn't been published yet, and all of the reports I've seen about this study neglect to mention exactly what method of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) was used. Nicotine gum and the nicotine patch are the two most obvious choices, but smokers need to know that both of these treatments should be regarded as medications.
According to drugs.com, Nicorette gum may interact with other drugs, and potential side effects include diarrhea, dizziness, joint and muscle pain, rash, swelling of the face, and "burning at the application site." Application site? That would be…the tongue?
Meanwhile, the nicotine patch, which is called a "medication" by MedicineNet, also may interact with other drugs, and lists side effects similar to the gum, along with breathing difficulties, chest pain, and irregular heartbeat.
In the e-Alert "Tool Time" (8/17/05), I told you about two botanicals that can help smokers quit, with or without hypnotherapy – no medication necessary.
Lobelia is an herb that contains a substance called lobeline, which has a chemical structure similar to nicotine, but is non-addictive. An HSI member named Noel sent us an e-mail with this description of how lobelia works: "Using Lobelia and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), the neurotransmitters are calmed until the body begins to produce the N-acetylcysteine again, which is about a 45 day process." As I've noted in other e-Alerts, NAC is an invaluable amino acid that enhances the production of glutathione, one of the body's most powerful antioxidant enzymes.
More than 15 years ago, Dr. Mary Cody, a physician and researcher, found that a botanical called Plantago Major creates a natural aversion to tobacco when inhaled or ingested. In a 1992 study, 24 heavy smokers were given Plantago Major tincture in a nasal spray and then instructed to smoke. More than 80 percent of the subjects reported an aversion to tobacco shortly after receiving the dose. This effect lasted as long as 24 hours for some of the subjects.
Dr. Cody's Plantago Major formula was patented shortly after that trial and is now available as a product called CIG-NO. Unlike nicotine patches or nicotine gum, which deliver the exact chemical you're trying to avoid, CIG-NO (which is sprayed under the tongue) creates an almost immediate reduction in cigarette cravings, with no reported side effects. You can find more information at cigno.com.

So far I'm at 7 days. Not terribly impressive, but hey, I'm working on it.

I've been smoking for 39 years. I had my last cigarette this morning......got some Nicorette..don't know if that's what I need to use, but so far so good. Is it carved in stone that you have to gain weight when you quit?

Carved in stone? No. I was on Quitnet while I quit, and there were some there who managed not to. It takes effort and concentration, and for me, I gained because quitting smoking was so hard for me I did better handling one daemon at a time! Also, keep in mind that it does affect your metabolism, at least for awhile.
Congratulations on deciding to quit! I still go back and read some of the horrible things smoking does to you when I miss it (which I don't do nearly as often as I used to!)

I have not had a cigarette in 3 weeks as of tomorrow at 3pm. The best I have done in 10 years!

On day 4! I'm on Chantix & the urges are tolerable. I just felt like something was missing. No matter what I was doing, I had a cigarette going. Now, I have substituted a bottle of water where my ash trays used to be. That helps a lot with just the physical action related to smoking & really helps me drink more water, which I'm terrible at remembering to do. It also helps me to not think about stuffing food in my face with every bend of the elbow.

I will celebrate one year smokefree on Feb. 11, 2008. Wow, did that year fly by. The patch worked for me. I used it for 8 weeks. My family and co-workers are very grateful for the patch! :)

About a month and doing great, easiest quit yet. I quit nicotine, caffine, and carbs (well, you know.. induction) on 1/1/2008 as a new years resolution to live healthier. I'm starting to excersize (just walking) this weekend, boy am I out of shape though.
I took the week for new years just in case things got tough, but to my surprise the headaches I got from caffine withdrawl were acually worse than the nicotine. It was an easy quit though I'm a very thankful for that.

This is my 3rd day... using 14mg. patch... of course, this is worse than previous two days - is the 3rd day the worst?
I had reduced for two weeks before jumping off ; the last week before quitting I smoked 12 cigs, 13, 12 , 9, 7 , 6, and 3. Then I quit.
This is my first attempt since I tried to quit about 4 years ago, which was not serious, I just reduced for a couple weeks.
"a long journey starts with a single step"... I guess so but it sure seems like most of you have been quit for a long time ; I can only dream of getting to 20 days, or months or years!!
I didn't start until I was almost 30yrs old... and then smoked for the next 20 years!! I never liked it, and I always said it was a dumb thing to do...
Sounding like an excuse, but I think it was like a defense mechanism for me when I lived with a smoker - the 2nd hand smoke bothered me a lot and when I had an "actual cig" it seemed tolerable for some reason - does that make ANY sense? Anyhow, by the time I moved out of there I was an addict.
And last month my doc told me I have the beginnings of emphysema. Wah wah wah, what have I done??? Oh My Goodness!!

Day 4... am I the only one posting daily? I hope that is okay...
I think that day 3 was worse... but it is only 10am here.

Day 18 for me. There are times when I really want a cigarette & just get past them knowing that if I smoked one, it would do nothing at all for me except feed the little nicotine monster & make things worse. It still seems like a big part of who I am is just missing. I am smoker, hear me choke! Hey, no more of that, thank goodness. No more heart palpatations, either. I can do this!

Doing great, just remember it does get easier... slowly.. I can sometimes go a day now without even thinking about smoking, I'm sure as time goes on that it'll be a week and then a month... time heals everything.

5th day!!
I am having trouble today... no smoking, but I am feeling let down that "it isn't easier" yet. Wah wah wah, I know.
I have been saying "just get through this day no matter what" and I did, but eventually that doesn't make sense anymore - get through to being easier but it didn't happen.
Q - is it okay to shower with the patch on?

That's one of disadvantages of using nicotine replacement that you don't hear a lot about, whether it be the patch, gum, lozenges or inhalers. All of them keep you in a constant state of nicotine withdrawal; you get some nicotine, but not as much as you were used to. It's a form of chemical tease.
The good news is that once you quit the nic completely, it takes 72 hours to get completely clear of your system and then it does start getting easier.
When I quit cold turkey, my worst day was day 3 but by day 7, I was feeling a lot calmer and having a lot fewer (and less intense) cravings and by day 14 I was hardly having any cravings at all.
Another thing is to stop thinking in terms of 'just get through this day' and start thinking in terms of 'just get through the next 3 minutes of this crave'.
Thinking in terms of an entire day, especially when you in the middle of a craving episode, can overwhelm the willpower but if you think in terms of 5 minute blocks, it seems a lot more possible.
Deal with the craving you are having right now and don't worry about the next one until it happens. ;)

Yes, it seemed in the numerous times I "quit" last year - it was around day 3...

It will, just hang in there. I think you can shower with it like the birth control patch.....call the pharmacy to make sure.

Day 10 [9th full day] !!!!
I am still getting strong urges to smoke, especially when my "Fibro" pains hit or when I am having abdominal cramps. I even let out a few screams yesterday!!
"arrrrggggg, I wanna smoke ; nooooooooo" sort of thing. [am I nuts or what?]
I am sure that those pains were the reasons I started smoking in the first place, about 20 years ago. Tobacco really does help with some kinds of pains, but hey, IT IS THE WORST OF ALL WAYS TO DEAL WITH PAINS.
Done, done, and done with tobacco!!!!
[and with the patch too - it was starting to leave red marks and a sort of allergic reaction to it... and the nic gum gives me acid reflux - so I am off all of it now. ]

hi atrina! congrats to you and everyone else who has been strong enough to give up smoking. tomorrow will be 5 weeks smoke free for me. you asked when will the cravings stop? i wish i knew. its weird, some days im fine and only have a few cravigs that only last for a few seconds. but today was rough. i litterally had my coat on the go out and buy a pack. but my sons voice kept ringing in my ear..."im so proud of you mom".... so i brushed my teeth instead! it takes a very strong perosn to quit smoking, most people dont have the strength to do it. but, whenever i walk past some smokers who are standing outside freezing their tushes off for that last little hit, i know i made the right decison.
