It's pretty odd that it's usually in my dreams that I ever think of taking a drag. Then I wake up feeling guilty. This forum has been what saves me during those "brain farts".  Stay strong and true everyone.

23 Days Down And Today I Failed!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya know what??? It's only a failure if you let it be.....
A slip is when you smoke one or two times after your quit date. It’s different than relapse, which is when you go back to smoking the way you have always smoked. It’s extremely common for people who have just quit to have slips and to feel really bad about them. The problem is that feeling bad often leads to another cigarette and can easily undo all your hard work.

If you slip, remember…

* A slip is an opportunity to think about what went wrong and how to prevent it the next time.
* One cigarette does not make you a smoker again. One cigarette didn't make you a smoker in the first place, and one slip now doesn't mean you have to go back to smoking again.
* Slips are learning opportunities, not excuses.

Put them down...flush them......grind them up and throw them away...do whatever it takes if you really want to quit.

Would have to concur with Mischa and Poyna- you have not failed you have had a sudden short circuit to your overall plan - now straighten out the wires and stop believing that cigs are the answer to any problem :agree: :agree: :agree: and go back to the first day and read - slips can happen you have the power to straighten them out

(((((((((((( Brenda )))))))))))))) ~ you have not failed ~ as everyone has said, it was just a slip - BUT don't let it become anything more! Kick that nicotine out of touch!

If I can do it, then you can! (ex-40+ a day smoker here!)

This is day 2 of my recommittment to quitting smoking. Apologies to those, like 301 and Fab by Fifty, who came around to encourage me in my last renewed attempt a couple of weeks ago.

I don't expect anyone to take the girl who cried wolf very seriously.

But anyway - I just wanted to let the group know that I'm on day 2 and it's fine. I don't get cravings during the day usually.

I'm trying to keep humble and cautious and not be overconfident.

OK for me it's now 5 months 19 days smoke free.

For those of you who have "failed" again.....it's only failure if yu stop trying!

I'm 51 yrs old and I've been smoking since I was 13 yrs old. I've tried so many times....and even succeeded for short periods. But each time I tried that was a success in itself.

The surgeon general once said that cigaretts were as addictive as heroin. In many ways it's even worse than heroin....I mean, when was the last time you saw an ad for heroin on a billboard? or in a store?

Keep at it....eventually it will stick and you'll be smoke free for life.

I read Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" three times, and it made perfect sense. The only problem was that I couldn't get through more than 20 hours without a panic attack! So, I did what *Carr* did - go to a hypnotist. That was on June 29, 2005. So far:

One week, six days, 3 hours, 31 minutes and 23 seconds. 394 cigarettes not smoked, saving $59.16. Life saved: 1 day, 8 hours, 50 minutes.

No cravings, no weight gain, no problem being around other smokers. It's exactly what I wanted. I feel *free*!

Yay!

Where do you get the calculations? Just figure how much you smoked and multiply by # of days? or is there an equation to plug things in and get a calculation.

I quit Jan 3, 2005. Hearing about Peter Jennings and Dana Reeve really makes me glad I finally did it.

LOL... i hate math. so i'll just chime in here with my story.
i started smoking when i was 14. yes, i was a bad girl back then. at that time a pack of cigs cost 35 cents!!! we bought them out of a machine... boy i'm old!
got pregnant with my daughter at 20, quit IMMEDIATELY, no lie. after she was born i picked it up again slowly, first a drag from someone else's, then a whole cigarette, then eventually my own pack and that was it, i was again a smoker. so stupid. the only thing dumber than smoking in the first place is starting again after you've quit!!
got pregnant with my son at 22 and quit yet again, it was a little more difficult this time, but i could never be a pregnant smoker. no matter what, that is just WRONG.
same thing again after his birth. i started up again. and i continued to smoke -i opened a new pack about every other day. right about the time when tax on cigs was going to be increased, my daughter was in 7th grade. it was november national smoke out day or whatever, and her health teacher was giving extra credit to any student who could get their parents to sign a contract to cease smoking for a set amount of time. one week, one month, 48 hours, whatever. for one week i snuck ONE cigarette each night before bed, and then i quit! my daughter is now a junior in college.
the most i ever paid for a pack was $2.10. shortly after i quit they went up over $3 a pack. no idea what they sell for now.
so this november i believe it will be 8 years. (math :daze: ) i would LOVE to know how much money i have saved, but like i said, MATH...
CONGRATS AND GREAT JOB TO ALL YOU QUITTERS, ESP. NEWBIES!! GOOD LUCK AND KEEP IT UP!

Well I need to get my shit together as far as foods. I start out ok then slide to just keeping from feeling so rotten. Which is paradox because if I would stop that, maybe my guts wouldn't hurt so bad.
I don't have the mental withdrawl games, just the physical not feeling good. Bloating, indigestion and did I mention, bloating.
But I am telling myself, my body has to learn to function without the poison, so no wonder.

Coming up on 2 weeks here as well. The longest I've quit so far has been 5 months. Yeah...stupid to pick it up again at that point, but addict think convinced me that I could handle just one puff (yeah, right!) off my friend's cigarette. This time around, I have hopefully learned from my mistake and I have to remind myself daily that I'm one puff away from a pack a day. :p

Hi Lisa,

So glad to have someone so close in the quit as I am.

Don't feel bad, I had a 3 month quit as well once a few years back....BUT it wasn't really MY quit, it was for everyone around me....except me. I wasn't ready and didn't want to give them up. So for 3 months it was hell every single day, every second of the day...until one day when all presures around me allowed me to say I can't deal with this and started back up. REally I just needed an excuse.

This time its so different...I am so happy to not be fighting it mentally every day like that. It just amazes me what difference it made. Too bad I wasn't ready sooner.

And yeah, I agree one puff may be all it takes, but I feel like I won't want to take even that one anymore. Then again I don't want to set myself up either :)

To answer the question on me - 24 years of smoking and yep quit cold turkey after reading a supportive web site - do you want the link :)

For me, I started smoking in 1975, when I was 15 - so 30 years as a smoker. For quitting, I used Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking (read it three times) and one session with a hypnotist.

Have stopped seeing the new boyfriend, but still not smoking. LOL!

I had quit before and went back after two years of being smoke free. This time it is different. I had used the seven day smoke away program. Besides really wanting it this time more so then the last few times, I never have had the desire at all in these two years. I smoked for 25+ years. It is so nice to smell nice again. Especially since I work in a company that manufacturers perfume.

Yup 30 years here as well.
First time tried the patch, this time I stepped down to 3/ day 2 puffs each, then quit over about a month.
I also had some hypnosis stuff to listen to. It was really relaxing but if it had anything to do with the quit, I don't know. I didn't listen to it as much as I was supposed to.

I had a 3 month quit as well once a few years back....BUT it wasn't really MY quit, it was for everyone around me....except me. I wasn't ready and didn't want to give them up.

I understand what you're saying, bubu. I think that played a part in my relapses as well (and there have been several over my 25 years of smoking); that knowing you need to quit and being pressured by people around you to quit and even wanting to quit yourself, but at the same time not really wanting to quit. I kept telling myself, "but I like smoking" and had myself convinced that I was depriving myself of something that I enjoyed doing.
I think what got me over that was a website I ran across that challenged me to really think about whether I actually liked smoking itself or whether what I really liked was avoiding withdrawal. There was an exercise that convinced me beyond a doubt which it really was: the challenge was to smoke one cigarette (this assumes you are still smoking, of course) and actively focus on the smoking itself and all pleasurable feelings, emotions and sensations I got from the actual act of smoking from the act of lighting and the first inhale to the time I stamped out the butt and write them down as they occur during the process. I started out thinking that I'd have at least one or two things that I could say I enjoyed but to my surprise, at the end of the cigarette, my page was blank and that was a very freeing moment for me because it allowed me to get past the idea that I was giving up something that I liked and enjoyed, even if it was for better health and a longer life. There wasn't a single thing that I could write down that I really enjoyed about the act of smoking; not one. That was my last cigarette.
Once I realized that I was hurting my body doing something that I didn't even really enjoy after all, it became a lot easier to quit...cold turkey. And you know what? Withdrawal was hardly noticible this time and was completely over in 3 days. I still have occasional thoughts of smoking but usually I just remind myself how I didn't enjoy anything at all about my last cigarette and shrug it off.
You know what's really funny? My DH and kids didn't even notice that I wasn't smoking until yesterday.

Hey all,
congrats to everyone...Bugsey......Wishing you strength and resolve in getting your QUIT back. !!! You can beat the deamon. :)

Lisa,
Dang- do I hear what you are saying with your last cig. There really isn't anything except that first hit to the brain. After that first hit its already dulled, that all subsequent ones are just feeders to the first one. And nothing then is enjoyable about an entire cigarette.
And you are totally right. Its the fear of the withdrawl not the enjoyment. Its just wanting to stay or feel normal. And normal for us has been with nicotine for so long that our bodys literally have to re-learn what normal actually is. AND THAT is where I have the biggest problem. My brain is fine, its bodily functions that are totally messed up.

At the moment I have to learn how to deal with stress in a way that also isn't painful to me otherwise.
Since I have quit 15 days ago a stess factor has emerged at work (about a week ago) and I am having a tough time keeping my anger. So, rather than smoke I chew gum before exploding over the issue....the gum makes me hungry and gives me gas so then I eat or drink something instead. and with the wrong foods of course more stomach probs... its a circle that I need to end as it has always ended in lots of pain and is driving me crazy.

Its like am I headed for a food addiction instead...I really don't need that. Feel totally miserable guys. But I will not smoke.
I can't seem to sub in water, I feel like I am going to toss it right back up.
So anyway...I am working on it....some days are better than others and am sure I'll figure it out.

In the meantime........Anyone with a Veteran out there.....

HAPPY VETERANS DAY ........I thank those who serve ....FOR US

Pia you need to find a way to handle the cravings without replacing the addiction. I did have a big glass of water every time I wanted a smoke and if the urge was strong I walked around my block. This helped me keeping the food cravings in line. I only stopped smoking once before this one almost 3 years ago and the first time I replaced my smoking with food and gained 60 pounds...well 3 years ago I was aware of the danger and found other ways to battle ALL cravings. You can do it Pia..just keep on fighting :)

Hi guys...gonna say good bye til day 3.....
I caved Friday nite had a half one then....then 3 halfs on Saturday...and no less than 5 halfs today.

I got very upset when our sirens went off, my youngest had just left and the trucks went to an intersection that is terrible for wrecks...son # 2 had also gone that way, and I just caved with nerves.
Anyway my mistake was to have that sealed pack that was supposed to keep me from going insane, that if I 'really wanted one, it was there. It worked for 15 days.
Today I threw them away, after number 5 of course and after losing face.
So until I have at least those 15 days back I won't post in here again.
I will be LC and watering starting tonight.
Please wish me luck.... I know I can do this. I will be strong.
I want this chain and log to stop dragging me down.

Not a smoker, but quit chewing tobacco Friday night, 35 hours so far. Been using nicorette gum 4 mg, also bought and have been listening every night to a self-hypnosis cd to quit chewing. So far so good, the gum seems to help with needing something in my mouth after meals.

Newbie here, 16 days now after 30 years of smoking and about 2 dozen previous quit attempts (none nearly this long, I am a non-smoker now!).

Question: I want to start low carb due to 5-10 pound weight gain, but I'm not yet ready to give up my sugarless Bubble Yum (20 or so pieces a day).
I just need the oral input from the chewing and blowing bubbles, it helps me stay calm and focused. Can I still do low carb while I'm chewing it if I restrict severely with all other foods?

Lisa N
Tue, Jan-03-06, 19:40
jgirl, there's a lot of low carb plans out there (although none of them I'm aware of would encouarge a 20 piece a day gum habit ;) ) and since you have relatively little to lose, I'd say that the gum probably won't get in the way of you losing those 10 pounds, nor is it necessary for you to go very low carb.
Since your body is recovering from a long-term nicotine addiction, now is not the time to be treating it harshly and restricting things that are good for it (like veggies, for instance). Eating lots of veggies and adequate amounts of proteins and healthy fats can only help speed the healing process (don't forget the water to help flush all those toxins out of your system!).
IMO, it might be a good idea to start cutting back on the gum; chewing that much gum every day is very hard on a specific jaw joint called the TMJ and it would suck to rid yourself of the nicotine addiction and give yourself chronic jaw pain in the process. :p

2 weeks, 2 days so far for me!

I started with zyban, and switched to the gum. Which reminds me...does anyone know if there are any carbs in the mint nicorette gum???

PitViper19
Wed, Jan-04-06, 09:28
sunni,

Here are the ingredients for the mint nicorette 4 mg:
Mint 4 mg Inactive Ingredients: gum base, magnesium oxide, menthol, peppermint oil, sodium carbonate, xylitol, D&C yellow #10. Al. Lake

XYLITOL is the sweetener - here's what I found on it:
Xylitol has 40% fewer calories and 75% fewer carbohydrates than sugar and is slowly absorbed and metabolised, resulting in very negligible changes in insulin. About one-third of the xylitol that is consumed is absorbed in the liver. The other two-thirds travels to the intestinal tract, where it is broken down by gut bacteria into short-chain fatty acids.

I'm using the mint 4 mg nicorette too, also on induction - haven't noticed any adverse effects to weight loss (I've lost 5 lbs so far in 5 days).

Note to self - remember to go buy more nicorette tomorrow!!

My older brother came over to help me with framing in my basement. I told him I had quit chewing (Kodiak) and it's been 2 weeks. He said good for you, as he was putting in a dip (he chews the same I did).....didn't phase me - well, except a little while later I went and got a piece of the gum.

Also, it's kinda weird, but, the day after I quit, I got rid of all of my chew, or I thought I did. Then, the day after that I found that I had one full un-opened can left. I'm not quite sure why, but I still haven't thrown that one away. Maybe I'll give it to my brother.... anyway, God Bless all my fellow quiters - especially you Ponya - keep it up!! Gregg

30 days....not quite sure how many cigs not smoked, or habitrol not chewed (yes, I did both, sometimes at the same time) BUT...maybe 10 pounds gained! How are you guys handling this food-wise??? I'm fine all day, go to the gym nightly, it's all good....then, when I sit down to relax at night, watch TV, play on the computer, it all falls apart and I lose control totally. Any tips?

Jgirl - I've found that going on induction a few days before I quit has seemed to help (along with the Nicorette!!). It's almost as if, watching the weight fall off, has motivated me to stay tobacco free too!!

As far as the cravings, on induction, most of my cravings go away. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Mon, Jan-16-06, 00:48
Jgirl, I haven't noticed any weight gain...I did have a huge increase in appetite..probably trying to compensate for lack of insulin spikes...but I sparingly used sugar free mints, brushed my teeth and increased my water intake. At night after dinner and watching tv I do tend to think about it more, but with deep breathing and playing like I am exhaling I seem to get over it pretty quick. I use the patches so they really help as far as cravings go. I change them at night right before bed. The first few days it was weird not knowing what to do with my hands at the computer, but I played with a pen, chewed on a straw and things like that. I also hang out in a chat room with people who are quitting smoking and that helps tremendously. They all know what I'm going through and are very supportive and helpful....You are doing great!! Keep it up and you will kick it soon.

Thank, guys. I am doing it without any nicotine replacment this time, so I think that's part of the reason I'm feeling like I'm starving all the time. I was chewing sugar free bubble gum, which helped, but I stopped when I discovered each piece was 3 carbs. But I guess that's better than binging, so I think I'll go back to chewing it!

Jgirl, quitting smoking can cause your blood sugars to be unstable for a time which may be why you feel hungry all the time. It may help to make sure that you eat small meals more frequently, say every 3 hours or so, to keep your blood sugar on an even keel for the next three days and then to make sure that you don't skip meals whenever possible after that.
See this link (http://whyquit.com/joel/Joel_03_21_blood_sugar.html) for more on that.

Hi
I'm a quitter too!
I gained 30 pounds since but I am on my way back down. I have been on atkins since 1/8/06 & have lost 5 lbs. I found in the beginning of non- smoking I got a lot of satisfaction drinking out of a straw. It is a fast way to get all you water in and then out :)I added ice and water to diet sodas to make them last longer. (yuk! watered down soda.) It may sound gross but I liked it. fruity diet sodas taste so sweet anyway. best to all.

Y'know...... somedays still feel just as hard as day one. I just have to keep saying NO to having the "first" one and I should be ok.

Good point. Instead of thinking of it as "I'm never going to smoke again", it's much more manageable to think (and do) "I'm not going to smoke right now". :)

30 days, 8 hours and 37 minutes tobacco free!!
Quit date: 12-30-05 ~ 11:00 PM

Yay, I'm in the 230's again. 230 was my previous goal I got to, last January. I had lost 60 total. I then put 20 of it back on over the course of the last 7 months. Now, I've lost 11 of that 20, and plus, I've decided to get down to 220. So, 19 pounds to goal.

The weather has been so mild here in NE, I grilled steaks for supper last night - temps were in the 50's and 60's last week. Grillin burgers tonight.

My last cigarette was November 14th (2005) probably around 6:00 p.m. I drank and smoked, they went hand in hand with one another. I decided to quit for good that day. I was losing too much of my life. I figured I was spending around $45 per week on beer and cigarettes. I feel soooo much better now, why didn't I do this long ago? Probably because I wasn't ready. I knew I wanted to quit smoking and if I did, that meant I had to quit drinking too. So they both are gone. I can honestly say I still have cravings but I just tell myself that "i don't do that anymore" and move on. I also went back to LC'ing the next week after I quit. I am determined to make my life better and be thinner, smoke and alcohol free for the summer, heck the rest of my life!

I came to that same conclusion. I kept drinking though then I just started LCing on the 1/8/06 and no more beer. I feel absolutely great. Its nice to know that there are others that are going through the same thing I am. Take care and to all I wish the best. We are all on a very important journey. :daizy:

I guess there really are people out there that go through the same thing as I do. I hid in the closet for so long and thought people didn't know, but they probably did. I drank every other day and would drink at least a 12 pack or more. When I drank, I smoked, and boy did I smoke! I would smoke at least a pack and sometimes open another. This went on like that for years. Once in awhile I would go two days off beer/smokes then get right back on. I would wake up in the morning and lay there and think if it was my day to drink/smoke. How bad was that? I finally had enough and decided to quit on November 14th 2005. I feel so much better and am slowly getting my life back. I now concentrate on LC'ing. It keeps me from drinking. I wasted so much money and life on that stuff, something I will never get back. But hey, I have a whole new life to look forward to! ;) I appreciate the support and will post often. Sometimes I live one day at a time and there was times I had to live one hour at a time, but I am making it. Thank God, which I do several times a day.

You all take care and stay in touch...
