Hi all! Today is day two that I've quit smoking. I'm not really craving it too bad. Over the last month I have went from almost 1 1/2 packs a day down to 5 cigs a day. I'm using the gum. I KNOW if have to quit because I hate smoking and I hate the effects it has, but at the same time I hate that feeling of knowing I can NEVER have another smoke again. I can't cheat, because I would start again. It's a scary feeling. It's like I am giving up part of me. A bad part, but a part none the less.
I have been reading what you all have written and you have given me the courage to just do it.
Wish me luck!

Miz Twack is in da smoke free house !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome girl and best of luck to you. Quitting smoking will be hard nomatter when ya do it so I say do it now and get the worst over with, hehehe. I remember the week before I quit . I was planning etc.. I think the worst was the "waiting" to quit on my quit day. Then a lil birdy cherped in my journal (Mischa) and said, Angel if it's buggin you then just quit now. I'd have to look back in my journal to find her exact words :). But I took her advice and quit at 10pm that night. Sooo glad I did too.
Before if somthing was wrong the doc just mumbled, "Quit smoking." Now they actually treat me and listen. So many changes for the better. Im here for ya girl anytime.

Congrats to all you Quitters

It can be hard, but sooooooooo worth it in the end - look at Mischa and I, both almost 2 years smoke free :yay:

I don't miss it at all. In fact, these days I really hate the smell - which is incredible to me as I didn't really want to give up, I just did it because I thought I should. That, and the price of cigarettes in the UK - was amazed to see that the brand I use to smoke sells for around £5 a pack these days - that's almost US$10 or Canadian $11

I have been quit for 1 Year, 10 Months, 3 Days, 20 hours, 31 minutes and 36 seconds (673 days). I have saved £6,469.00 by not smoking 26,954 cigarettes. I have saved 3 Months, 3 Days, 14 hours and 10 minutes of my life.

No smoking for me!!

I am going out with all my smoker friends tonight!! What do I do? Just don't pick up right? I'll have my gum with me. I notice that when I drink coffee (morning) is when I really want to smoke and we usually go out for coffee.

Anyway,

I'm still doing good and tomorrow I am going to the gym and I'll be able to hopefully see a difference in my breathing. Ok it may be too soon to really see a difference but I'm still going to the gym tomorrow!!

Just wanted to tell everyone about some great milestones that I've reached today:

I have not smoked for 23 months, which is 700 days, and I have not smoked 28,000 cigarettes (wow, can you believe that figure!).

(I have been quit for 1 Year, 11 Months, 6 hours, 8 minutes and 15 seconds (700 days). I have saved £6,722.45 by not smoking 28,010 cigarettes. I have saved 3 Months, 1 Week, 6 hours and 10 minutes of my life.)

... next big milestone is 2 years smoke-free on 1 January!

Congrats to all the quitters here - and to those of you who are struggling, just take a look at my figures - I really didn't want to give up smoking, but thought that perhaps I should - so, if I can do it, then so you can you!

I quit on 12/04, my 40th birthday. I have quit many times before, well like 4 or 5 and some for several years at a time. I lost my WONDERFUL Dad to Lung CANCER in 1998. He had quit 10 years before that. I only hope I won't suffer the same fate he did. I must admit I miss it a little, but no cravings just 12 pounds, hence the LC WOE and I feel better LC WOE too. But.....I cheated on Saturday and had 3 with my Sis in law when she came over for dinner, I feel GUILTY.
But hey, I haven't spent any money on the darn things in almost 2 months and I am proud to say I quit without patches or gum....oh well
I am sure my success will be forever this time, if only I could get my sis in law to quit (I'll just stop inviting her for dinner! LOL)

I've been smoke-free since January 3rd, 2005. And I think my husband has as well. However, when I'm at work, I really don't know. He was supposed to go on a one-day trip to Manitoulin Island (Ontario) tomorrow but now he's changed his mind because the driver is a heavy smoker and my husband doesn't think that he sit in the car for 3 hours and not have one. I'm proud of him. I just hope that I can do it. I no longer have a problem with the Atkins' program but I'm not sure that I can stay away from the cigarettes. The spring time is a very bad time for both of us as we garden and we've always smoked when we take a break. I hope this time we can do it.

OK....here's mine.

I'm 50 yrs old, 51 in March and I quit Jan 3 of this year. So I'm 26 days smoke free!!! I have been smoking since I was 13. Regulary and heavily since I was 18 or 19.

Don't know if it's because of LC, or the right timing or what....but this has been a very easy quit for me! I smoke at least a carton (10 packs) a week. That's over $400/month. I started out using Zyban and the patch....but I kept forgetting the Zyban so I've pretty much stopped taking it. The patch is causing all kinds of skin reactions....I'm allergic to adhesive....and it's giving me grief sticking to me, so I'm going to get off it as fast as possible.

But! I've not gained any weight....in fact I've lost a couple!!! And I feel great! Sleeping better too! I've quit a dozen times....but this time, no matter what, I cannot start smoking agin!

Everyone on here has done so well! Very inspiring!

Keep up the good work!

I am smoke free for 10 days now. In these 10 days I have gained 12 pounds from eating instead of smoking - but I am back on atkins to correct that. I have smoked on and off since age 14. I am positive that this time I have quit for good!!! :D

Smoke free for exactly 35 days, 15 hours !
It has been TOUGH, but I feel so much better ! I can actually run on the treadmill now, instead of getting winded after walking for ten minutes.

Terrified of gaining weight, so I started LCing three weeks ago as well. Might as well go for the double whammy..lol

I guess this is my year to get healthy....If you all can do it...so can I !!

I too have joined the lc gang because I was scared of gaining weight--well, frankly I had gained before I quit & put on about 8 lbs. since quit ;) ! But though it is hard, I am thrilled to pieces to be in control of my life & know that addictions & cravings don't rule me :) --hang in there & you'll be free too! It got so much easier around day 45-50, now it is very smooth.

I've been Quit 69 days. $360.52 and 20 days of my life saved!

I have been smoke free for 11 months and 3 days and it feels great! I haven't figured out the amount I've saved or how I've added time to my life, but its lots in both instances I'm sure.

I now am sensitive to the smell of tobacco and it turns me off. I can tell if someone's been smoking a mile away or even if a smoker has been an elevator and isn't there anymore. And to think that I smelled like that too...ewwwwwwww

One of my motivations was to buy something large in my case a big screen tv that I knew I had to stop smoking to be able to afford. Well, its worked. Cigarettes don't enter my thoughts anymore, except for a very rare 'wish I had one now' thought that is easily dismissed.

So congratulations to all of those who have stopped smoking and are in the process. Yes, it does get easier day by day. Its more habit than anything else.

12Feb I started LCing and 19Feb was my first smoke free day in 30+yrs. All that time at 1 1/2 packs/day.

The money I am saving is going to help my get a new car. My lungs are clearing up and the 6 flights of stairs in the 3 story building I work in....... I can go up now without having to stop to catch my breath!

I need to always remember how bad the withdrawal was when I wanted to quit. The 3rd day was the worst and I just stayed home from work and slept and drank loads of water..........
By the 4th day I had rounded the corner and it started getting easier.

I realize that I am only 1 cigarette away from starting again, so I cannot afford to have even one!

Good luck to all those who want to quit. I know I feel better, smell better (yucky smell), breathe easier and love not wasting my money on those things!

Hi all,

I've been smoke-free for 1975 days, 18 hours and 36 minutes. (Found a cool calculator online to figure this out)
At approx 1 1/2 packs a day, I've not smoked 71136 cigarettes and saved approxmately $20 748 (estimating $7 a pack).
That means I've saved 8 months, 1 week of my life.

Putting all this in perspective, I'm pretty proud of myself.

I am also on 1 week 6 days etc.... just fell back into smoking three months ago, the worst whenI was a non smoker was not drinking as I would ALWAYS need a smoke with every drink.... it stifled my social life a bit, this time( seven days on patches, 6 on pure will power) I can have a couple of drinks an don't even want one... YAY!not that I want to drink very much, but it is nice to have the option without being controlled by an addiction...

One of my work mates was a chain smoker, you know the kind- lights each of his three morning tea break cigs off the last and when he recently quit smoking(good move for him, I culd hear his pluereil(sp?) from across the office) he said the third night of no cigarettes was like a fever breaking- he awoke at 2 am with a sudden urgent feeling of not desiring a cigarette! I found the second night after stopping using patches( I only used them for a week but REALLY needed them) I was having a dream about smoking and rememberthinking, "what am I doing? I don't smoke!" in the same way I do when I dream about flying planes etc 'cos I don't fly planes either, I don't even feel like an ex- smoker, just a non smoker, no self righteous reformed smoker from me!

Thanks for that Mischa...I am still reading and following links, but it sure is a good motivator. After losing my grandfather (lung cancer) and my father (congestive heart failure and abdominal aortic aneurysm) you would think that would have done it for me. But I just wasnt ready I guess. I am now. This is actually going surprisingly easy except for one really wicked craving today. Hopefully it will be this easy the rest of the way!

I quit smoking 9 years and 9 months ago today. I smoked 2 packs a day for 28 years. I quit with no patches or gum or pills. I was in so much back pain, and I needed a spinal fusion and my Dr. refused to do it until I quit smoking. That was October 18, 1995. I couldn't use anything to quit because the nicotine was the problem, and could lower the chances of having a successful fusion from 95% to 50%. Pain is a great motivator. I remember the first 3 weeks being the hardest. Cravings are very short lived. It will get easier. I haven't had any cravings in years, and now can't stand to be around cigarette smoke.

That is 142,200 cigarettes that I haven't smoked.
That is $14,120.00 that I have saved. (I don't know what cigarettes cost now, so I used $2.00/pack)

Now why can't I do that with food?!!!

Jadefox26,

If you are pregnant, you don't need to be around second hand smoke either. You are well within your rights to ask people not to smoke around you-especially if it is indoors. It isn't self-righteous- it is the smart thing to do. I

Hi Mischa,
Thanks for inviting me to come to the thread!
At 11:30 tonight, I have not smoked for 48 hours!
I smoked for 36 years, and the habit of the hand to mouth thing is still terrible, because I find myself reaching, and reaching when there is nothing to reach for!
I am still craving, but like Mischa said, the craving come, I drink a ton of water and they go! I can, and will do this! 36 years of my life filling my lungs with tar and nicotine! That is most of my life!!
I hope any damage goes forever, because the damn cigarettes are definitely gone!! I am now a non smoker!!!!
Thanks again, Mischa!

STACEY KEEP IT UP, WE ARE DOING THIS! IT IS ALMOST OVER!!

I have not smoked for 25.5 hours. I am finding it pretty easy. I even got mad at my dh last night and refused to allow my mind to use it as an excuse to smoke. I also refuse to gain weight while quitting. I did cave right before bed and had a snack size snickers, but it was only 9 carbs and I can deal with that compared to smoking. Today I am going to get myself some sugar free something just in case I get a sweet tooth. I really think I am going to make it this time. This morning it's not even bothering me. I am drinking coffee with caffeine too.

Thu, May-19-05, 08:09
Mischa,

I had the same problem with the hand to mouth thing. I thought I would go crazy. To me that was the hardest part. I started sucking on tootsie roll pops (which when you are low carbing, that isn't really an option), but that really helped me. sometimes I even sat there an puffed on an unlit cigarette. Don't know if that is bad, or if you are getting much nicotine, but that helped too. I also took up knitting and crocheting, and occasionally when I wasn't thinking, I would find myself sucking on a crochet hook (crazy I know), but I found keeping my hands busy helped. The lollipops helped the most. Sucking on hard candy wasn't the same, I needed the hand to mouth thing going on. Keep up the good work. It can be done. I was such a committed smoker that I had already come to the conclusion that I would probably die from a smoke related disease, and was willing to do that rather than to try and quit. I was ready to give my life for my addiction. I thank God everyday for the back pain that I had, and the wonderful Dr. that refused to do the surgery, and the pain that was my motivation. My surgery was completely successful, and I have been pain free for almost 10 years- and smoke free as well. So it can be done. Take it from a 2 pack-a-dayer that was already resigned to dying for her habit. Just hang in there.

God Bless

Donna

be aware at all times. About 4 month after I quit I had the strongest craving ever! I really did not expect this..I made it through..but boy who would have thought:) So be aware at all times and strong :)

wirlwind
Fri, May-20-05, 08:51
Be aware, that at any time a strong craving can come out of nowhere. I had one about a year ago after being quit for nearly 9 years. It didn't last long, but it really shocks you because you think you are way past that. also be aware that you can never smoke "just one". So many people that have been quit for a number of years get a craving, and think that they can handle it and smoke 'just one", and that will be it. Our addictions are always under the surface waiting to be resurrected in full force. If you give in that one time, it will come roaring back with a life of its own, and the cravings and all will start right where they left off. I did that once after I had been quit 5 years, and the power that that addiction came back with nearly knocked me out of the boat. I went through about a week of torture, and it seemed even worse than when I quit the first time. And that was just from a few puffs of a cigarette- not even a whole one. It tasted so bad I couldn't stand it, but it awakened the craving.

mischa
Fri, May-20-05, 08:56
yes with the ' I have just one' I started again after being off 2 years back in 1990. Took me another 12 years of smoking to quit again!!!! So this time I NEVER smoke another cigarette AGAIN:)

Poyna, Day three is a little tough at times - I feel it was the most trying for me -

This is the day you motivate yourself - you walk, chew a dozen toothpicks and drink gallons of water -

Remember you can do this - it is your brain playing tricks on you. You must fight the urge and stay strong. You will feel better = really - just keep moving forward - reread all the info you have and

DON'T EVEN THINK OF HAVING ONE - you are almost past the worst. We are here for you communicate and work your way thorugh it!!!!!

And remeber to today - cause your special and gonna do it.

I have now stopped smoking for 1 days, 1 hours, 1 minutes, 11 seconds. That translates into 20 cigarettes NOT smoked, for a savings of $2! I have increased my life expectancy by 1 hours, 44 minutes, 14 seconds.

Of course, I crashed my WOE by having McDonalds for dinner. I know I know, bad me... but I wasn't aware of the blood sugar crash effect quitting can have. Was ill prepared to deal and gave in to a craving. I made my peace with it and am now prepared to handle it if it happens again :D

Way to go LadyArya! You are doing Fantastic, Keep it up its all worth it!
And, the foods can be controled in time also!
The important thing right now is keep yourself smoke free and begin to experince a healthy, happy, longer life and smoke free lungs!
I have been smoke free for 18 days now, after smoking for 30 some years and in the end almost 3 packs a day.
If I can do this, you can do this! Be proud, you are doing a wonderful thing!, and never, never pick up another cigarette as long as you live! :)

If you need help, or support just ask! I will gladly help! :)

Thanks :D I'm pretty proud of myself. I never thought I'd do this. Man, I always heard this would be tough. In some ways it really isnt, but in other ways, good god!

I think the strangest part is when you think "Wow.. this not smoking thing is really stressing me out... I should have a cigarette to calm down... oh... right.... nevermind"

HI again!
It does get easier. Just hang in there, fight all urges, and don't give up and don't give in!
After the third day it gets less stressful as far as wanting them. You may still crave them but the feelings are not as overwelming, and each day makes it easier and easier to laugh the cravings off!
As I said the third day is the WORST!, if you need help that day, for sure go to my journal or PM me!
I know what I went through at that point, so feel free to bug the day lights out of me! I will get you through it! :)
Its just as fresh in me, as it is in you, so never hesitate to ask me for help!
Good Luck and YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOURSELF! JUST STAY THAT WAY, AND KEEP REMINDING YOURSELF HOW PROUD YOU ARE TOO!!
BRENDA
