Well I'm sneaking in a few days early, but as I'll be out of town alll next week and won't be able to post I thought what the hey, I'll post today.

As of Monday March 1st.....I will have been smoke-free for 9 months! I am really proud of this....it truly is one of my greatest accomplishments because I never thought I could do it!

I had the strangest dream last night that I smoked 3 cigs on the day I was celebrating my quitting. Hmmmmm I woke up and really had to think if it was real or not.....I had this overwhelming feeling of guilt.....it was very strange.

Anywho......TY to Mischa who helped to guide me in my early days of quitting!

I stopped smoking winter break of 1999/2000, so that is now more than 4 years ago. But I am taking risks - I do occasionally pinch/shnorr a cigarette when I see others and feel like it. That means I have not been totally smoke-free - I estimate 10 a year, could be 20. I know it is very risky but feel I should be safe by now. I tried once before and fell back because there was a smoking co-worker, and the occasional cigarette from him became a habit.

I definitely feel availability (or lack thereof) is part of the equation - if I lived in Germany or France where smoking is so pervasive, I probably would smoke. Here, in my cycle of friends and colleagues, nobody smokes. I am all for making cigarettes more expensive, less available, strict ID, no smoking allowed in restaurants unless they have separate ROOMs, not just corners. The more tough it is - smoking in 0 degree Fahrenheit outdoor in Michigan! - the easier it is for people to stop or not start.

I could use a mentor PLEASE. Been a heavy smoker for 35 years, didn't stop but slowed down when pregnant. I'm really addicted. Even with a 14mg patch and 2mg gum I am emotionally unstable, almost hysterical if I can use that phrase - my eyes well up and I have to take deep breaths. and tell myself how illogical it is. Yesterday, I had an anxiety attack in the grocery store..afraid of people at the check out. Just damn weird. Today is day 3 and I've been up for a couple of hours, already a bit dizzy and unfocused.
I have never been able to go without a cigarette for more than 5 hours, because of this nervous thing. When I tried to quit for pregnancy,I got to around the 10th hour, we're talking around 2 am, and I woke up pacing,crying and just a"hysterical - out of control mess. My sister put her shoes on and went out and bought me a pack,saying she never wanted to see me like that again. Well,neither did I - but that same out of control feeling came back at birthing that child. LOL
Can I have a little help here....this will pass....life goes on.....anything.

this is day two for me.....but i'm also giving up the drinking too because the weight is not moving....it took me 12 months to lose 12 kilos.....so I thought if I'm going to go into withdrawl on one thing I might as well do two things and get it over with.....

Good for you Frances and Ricky it does get better. I smoked for 40+ years and just quit - using Zyban - hang in there the cravings do go away!! And I have continued to loose weight after a short stall of a couple of weeks.

I did not quit when I was pregnant either but back then no one knew very much about the dangers of smoking - my doctor smoked! I use cig. to keep calm - but I am finding that I do not need to smoke - some days I only think about smoking once or twice. Ricky if you need to talk on a daily basis please use my journal.

What I found myself sayng to myself on the weekend (I often talk to myself) is well if I'm not having any cravings then I can just have one a day....say after the evening meal.....rubbish....

Well, It is my 7th day without cigarettes. Didn't think I could make it, but your right. The physical cravings are almost gone.
Forgot to change out the patch Friday, too busy with going to a funeral...so,guess I'm over the patch too.
Am still feeling high strung and get weepy when I can't find things, but it has to get better. If I can get through an Italian 2-day wake with all that family - without a cig, coming home ought to be a walk in the park. Just don't want to walk alone yet folks. London, unfortunately they never do. :( You are a recovering nicotine addict, it's something you'll have to live with the rest of your life. The cravings won't always be constant, but always be on your guard, because 1 cig, can turn back into a nasty habit. Congrats on your upcoming 1 year anniversary!!!

Checking in for the week - as a weakling, I have suffered through 13 days now w/o a cig, but plenty of gum...so much so my tounge is sore as well as my jaw.
Also,have put on nearly 5 #'s and am PO'ed about it. So == this week I choose to go back to induction, clean up my act = and get busy with things that make life worth living instead of trying to control myself. The busier I get - the better I can make this transition to a non-smoker. Conversion here is hard,since I cannot remember when I was a non-smoker.
By the way ---where do you get these stats??? Why incript the idea of being smoke-free as a prisoner in jail, counting the minutes and seconds??? Are ya'll fooling around or do you have some basis for doing this?

Mischa - The website you mentioned Freedom from Tobacco was my biggest motivation for quitting. I was checking the website out at lunch one day (Thursday, March 11th) while puffing on a cig.. After reading some of the information that same day, I went outside and throw my cigarettes in the dumpster and have been smoke free for 20.5 days. I have tried to quit several times in the past and never made it. This time I know I will NEVER take another puff. The Freedom from Tobacco website was the extra motivation I needed.. :agree:

Thats how me and my hubby quit. It's been 5 months now and it really does get so much easier. We used zyband and the patch. The first week was difficult but then it got better. The first weekend was hard but now it's a piece of cake! The worst part was being scared to try. I quit also with a friend from work and everyday on break we would talk about our struggles and boy that really helped. They say to join a support group but i didn't have to cuz I had my own support group at work and home with my husband. It really helps. I smoked for 30 years and I know I'll never smoke again.
The only bummer is that my metabolism has shut down. I'm not eating anymore but gaining. Oh well I'll have all those extra years to try to lose weight. Also one last thing, I'm staying on zyband/wellbutrin for a year to give me the best chance. Zyband /wellbutrin make you not think about smoking, not 100% but 90%. Good Luck, you can do it adukart.

AMY, ONE LAST THING. uSE YOUR MONEY SAVED FOR MASSAGES, GETTING YOUR NAILS DONE, GETTING A PEDICURE. ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF TO PAMPER YOURSELF(IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT)
ALSO ALL THESE STOP SMOKING SITES TELL YOU TO QUIT COLD TURKEY. I FOR ONE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FUNCTION AT WORK WITHOUT THE PATCH. BELIEVE ME YOUR DIZZY ENOUGH YOUR FIRST FEW DAYS.
I FOLLOWED THE PATCHES STEPS AS DID MY HUSBAND AND FRIEND AND WE BELIEVE IT WAS VERY HELPFUL. I DON'T BELIEVE I WOULD HAVE BEEN SUCESSFUL WITHOUT THE PATCH.
AND MY LAST BIT OF ADVICE. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU ENJOY A FEW DRINKS ON THE WEEKENDS (WE DO) EVERYOTHER TIME I TRIED TO QUIT I ALSO TOLD MYSELF THAT I WOULD ALSO HAVE TO QUIT DRINKING BECAUSE DRINKING MAKES YOU WANT TO SMOKE. WELL NO WONDER I WASN'T SUCESSFUL, I WAS TRYING TO GIVE UP TOO MUCH AND I WOULD FAIL. I DON;T KNOW IF IT'S THE ZYBAND BUT I CAN DRINK WITH NO PROBLEM. OH SURE ONCE IN A WHILE WE'LL BE SITTING OUTSIDE ENJOYING A FEW DRINKS AND ONE OF US SAY'S GEEZ, SOMETHINGS MISSING, BUT SOMETIMES YOU DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. Thanks Barb for sharing. I have been trying to quit for the last year, it's become countless how many times. The doctor was happy to give it to me, and also said he prescribes 3 months but would recommend 6 at the least.

I drink maybe twice a month at most, but your right, drinking is what kills it usually, I really hope your right and that Zyban/Wellbutrin will help with this part.

Well he gave me a prescription for Budeprion, which he also called wellbutrin and Zyban. I assume they are all the same.

My quit date will be next Thursday.
